Ramsey Clark goes to court for al-Qaeda
  • A federal judge has agreed to consider a petition backed by former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and other civil rights advocates that challenges the detention of terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba. U.S. District Court Judge A. Howard Matz scheduled a Tuesday morning hearing on the matter. The petition, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, is the first court challenge of the detention of al-Qaida suspects. The petition for a writ of habeas corpus demands that the U.S. government bring the suspects before a court and define the charges against them.
Ramsey's never met an anti-American he didn't like.

    India-Pakistan
India willing to trade Bad Guys with Pak
  • Foreign minister Jaswant Singh said that if Pakistan sends any list of Pakistani criminals hiding in India, they would be found and promptly sent back. He made the promise in response to a question about a statement made on Saturday by his Pakistani counterpart, Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar, indicating Pakistan would send a list to India of wanted men. Sattar had given no further details and Singh said he had not heard of the list through official channels.
Sounds like sweet reason. If they're Bad Guys on one side of the border - terrorists or gangsters, doesn't matter - there's not much chance they'll change habits on the other side.

Kashmir pol: jihadis provide an "excuse" to term struggle as terrorism
  • National Kashmir Committee chairman Sardar Qayyum has said attacks on the Srinagar assembly and Indian parliament have defamed the Kashmir movement. He said these activities were not jihad. "Of late jihad has taken a shape in which non-Muslim civilians and even Muslims are killed on mere suspicion," he said. "This is terrorism, having nothing to do with jihad. You can present such activities as jihad, but there have been certain events like the attack on Srinagar assembly whose responsibility was accepted by some jihadi outfits which provided an excuse to term the Kashmir freedom struggle terrorism," he said.
No, when you blow people up indiscriminately, innocent and "guilty" and all shades in between, that really is terrorism. It's not just an excuse.

    Middle East
    Israel takes over Tulkarem
  • Israeli troops took over the Palestinian town of Tulkarem, imposing a curfew. One Palestinian was killed and 15 were wounded in gun battles. In a separate clash in Ramallah, a Palestinian intelligence officer was killed and two other members of the security services were wounded. Arafat warned that Israel has "crossed all red lines" by taking over Tulkarem. The heaviest fighting came in the adjacent Tulkarem refugee camp, where many gunmen fled after Israeli troops took over the town. One civilian was killed and a second critically wounded. Fourteen more people were wounded by gunfire. The governor of Tulkarem, Izzedine Sharif, urged residents over mosque loudspeakers to defy the curfew and resist Israeli troops. IDF troops in Tulkarm have arrested 18 Palestinians - including four senior wanted terrorist operatives - suspected of participation in terrorist activities.
In the Arab press, which lacks a sense of cause and effect, these actions will be presented as brutal incursions for no reason. Given the world's short attention span, they'll be remembered (if at all) that way.

Yasser blathers on about Palestinian state
  • President-for-Life Yasser Arafat said he will keep seeking a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital even if it cost him his life. "We do not know how to retreat, we know how to advance," Arafat said in impassioned remarks to a group of Palestinian intellectuals in Ramallah. "The Palestinian state will be established with al-Quds al-Sharif (East Jerusalem) as its capital. By God I see it coming, martyred or alive. May God give me the honor of martyrdom in my steadfastness for Jerusalem."
Seems like everybody else has been martyring themselves, while Yasser socks it away in his Swiss bank account. And Yasser, a retreat is a legitimate tactical move; sometimes it's called for to preserve your force or to improve your position. (F'instance, read up on Wellington's Peninsula campaign.)

Jerusalem mufti doesn't want any Jews in his mosque
  • Jerusalem Mufti Sheikh Ikrima Sabri warned that Jews and other non-Muslims should not be allowed to enter the Haram Al Sharif Mosque compound. “We oppose in the name of believers that the doors of the Haram Al Sharif are opened to non-Muslims because the general situation does not permit it,” Sheikh Sabri told official Palestinian radio. “Such a measure can lead only to escalation. It is totally out of the question that the doors of Haram Al Sharif could be opened to Jews and we hold the Israeli government responsible for all attacks on the sacredness” of the compound, Sabri said.
Ah, the voice of sweet reason from what is obviously a very scholarly man.

    Terror Networks
Gunnies shoot up family in Kashmir
  • Terrorists massacred at least 11 members of a Muslim family, including eight children and two women, in a midnight swoop on a village close to the border in Jammu and Kashmir. Armed guerrillas on Sunday night intruded into the house of Zakir Hussain in Poonch district, about 150 km from here, and sprayed bullets on his family members killing eight of them on the spot, including him, and injuring six. Three of the injured family members died on their way to hospital.
FoxNews says the youngest of those killed was 6 months old. Hindustan Times sez it could be a family feud and that three people have been arrested. Sure glad they're not my relatives.

Seven more snuffies depart gene pool in Kashmir
  • Seven militants, including a self-styled battalion commander of pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen, were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Kashmir valley. The Hizbul commander, Ghulam Mohammad Ganie was killed in an encounter with a joint search party of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of local police in Baramulla district of north Kashmir. Two more militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a gunfight which broke out during search operations by security forces in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
They will be missed. By somebody. Maybe by their Moms. 4,979 to go.

Pak Kashmir PM refuses to shut down Lashkar and Jaish
  • Prime Minister of Pakistani-occupied Kashmir has refused to arrest or seal the offices of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed despite a ban imposed by the regime. He urged Islamabad not to hand over any Kashmiri militants to India as they were "freedom fighters". "If members belonging to these groups live peacefully and don't indulge in criminal activities, we won't take any action against them," Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan said, fatuously. "But those who indulge in terrorism would be handed over to Pakistani authorities," he added.
Political support makes running a network of crazed killers so much easier. Every terror network should own at least one politician.

China links Xinjiang rebels to bin Laden
  • China has linked a series of attacks by Islamic separatists in Xinjiang region with Osama bin Laden, stepping up a campaign for international support in its own war on terrorism. The cabinet's information office outlined the allegations in a report that blamed "East Turkestan" forces for more than 200 incidents between 1990 and 2001 in Xinjiang, home of Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighurs. The report said 162 people had been killed and more than 440 injured, and that militants seeking a separate state called East Turkestan had masterminded incidents in Turkey, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, posing a threat to regional security. Forces led by bin Laden, Washington's chief suspect for September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, gave financial and material aid to East Turkestan separatists. Bin Laden met the leader of one group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, in early 1999.
Gosh, these bedfellows sure are strange. "The enemy of my enemy is... my esteemed trading partner"?

Lashkar-i-Taiba thug to take the high jump
  • An activist of Lashkar-i-Taiba, convicted of killing two policemen, will be executed after President Pervez Musharraf rejected his mercy petition. Shaukat Hayat, 38, gunned down two police constables at a checkpost in Multan in 1994 when they tried to stop him while he was riding a stolen motorbike.
    Goodbye, Shaukat. Have fun decomposing.

    Philippines nab al-Qaeda runner
  • The Philippine military arrested a man Monday suspected of being a courier for a radical Muslim leader detained in Manila for possible links to Osama bin Laden, as regional governments cracked down on Islamic militants. Lt. Col. Jose Mabanta said he was "one of the couriers and runners" used by the leader of the militant Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah. The Jemaah leader, said to be an Indonesian, was detained last week after a tip from Singaporean authorities. His arrest led to the seizure of explosives, which authorities believe was linked to a plot to bomb Western targets in Singapore. But Indonesian officials said they needed more information to determine the nationality of the 30-year old man known by various aliases, including "Sammy," saying he once lived in Indonesia.
A neat piece of cannon fodder. If they hit him very many times he may tell them some more about his little piece of the terror pie.

Indonesian religious loons threaten violence if they can't have their way
  • Irfan Awwas, director of the Indonesian Mujahidin Council, said President Megawati Sukarnoputri would be "playing with fire" if she ordered police to follow Singapore and Malaysia in cracking down on Muslim radicals across the country. "If security forces take action against the Muslim community, then I believe what will result will be major turmoil in Indonesia," Awwas said.
Lemme see here. If the government doesn't let them engage in violence and subversion, they're gonna become violent and subversive, right? That makes sense. Not a lot of sense, but sense.

    Swedish al-Qaeda in Guantanamo
  • The Swedish Foreign Ministry announced that the United States had arrested a Swedish national in Afghanistan suspected of being a member of bin Laden's al-Qaeda network. The Swede, whose identity was not disclosed, has been taken to the US military base in Guantanamo, Cuba, Foreign Ministry spokesman Goesta Grassman said.
Ya, sure. That'd be Abdullah Swenson.
...the horns on his turban were a big giveaway.

    The Alliance
Singapore group to register as political website
  • A small Singapore Muslim group which described Osama bin Laden as a "good Muslim" on its Internet homepage is to be registered as a political website. Authorities have been monitoring Fateha, an 18-month-old group with 20 members, and its website Fateha.com. Website providers are required by law to register with the Singapore Broadcasting Authority if they express or discuss political issues relating to the city-state. Fateha and its chief executive Zulfikar Mohamad Shariff have been criticised by Singapore leaders after questioning the government's support for the US-led war in Afghanistan.
If there's an argument against total freedom of the press, groups like this are probably it. The anti-terrorist in me says, "Yeah, register them and keep a close eye on them." The American in me says they're probably harmless loons and it's not the government's responsibility to control the content of their site - though it might be to monitor it. Having a look, it looks like it's a "gray" site, a propaganda outlet. If it's domestic, it's legit; if it's funded or controlled by someone outside the country - Saudi Arabia, for instance (the arguments echo those in the Saudi press) - it should be monitored as an agency of a foreign government. Uncomfortable, ain't it?

Malaysia to clamp down on madrassahs
  • Malaysia, which has arrested about 45 men in its campaign against Islamic militancy, said it was considering changing the rules governing religious schools, known as madrassas, to prevent them being used to stir unrest. "If we discover they are teaching something else other than religion, if they are teaching the people how to break the law, as happens in Pakistan, we will have to reconsider whether we will allow them to do so or not," Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said.
The PM seems a sensible man, doesn't he?

    Somalia picks up 20 suspects
  • Somalia has taken into custody around 20 people, including foreigners, for possible links to terrorism. There were some Iraqis in the 20 although Somalia is no longer holding all eight Iraqis arrested last month. "I cannot reveal the investigations or the nationalities of those being held but I can say that there are around 20 people from Somalia and other nationalities and we are questioning them on how they entered the country or on suspicion of illegal activities," the country's information minister said.
Better to do it yourselves than to have us do it for you. 'Course, in Somalia's case, that might not be so.
