This Week In Guns, December 20th, 2014

Powerful people are still trying to seize privately owned guns because they think they can. Ever wonder why, in the face of opposition folks want to act out their Hitlerian fantasies?

Because we are all a buncha of dumbasses!

From Bearing Arms we get a story about a sheriff who has publicly stated he will not enforce the new Washington state universal background check law.

Good for him.

Now, ask him to stop receiving money for the massive gun right infringements funded by Congress yearly, and I'd bet he'd be less than enthusiastic about that. Right out of your own pocket does Congress take money to ensure the state of Washington and counties do background checks on incidents that have happened at any time in your life, for the rest of your life.

But you know Bearing Arms. A man has gotta make a living even if it means whistling past the background checks Congress funds every year, essentially robbing you at gunpoint so you can be prevented from exercising your right to purchase a firearm.

Maybe a standard ought to be maintained whereby if you praise someone for their "pro 2nd Amendment stance" they should be asked, do you take federal money for background checks?

I think it would quiet down a lot of the lies that are being spread by the commercial sellers of guns. After all, as I have said before, they are part of an ongoing problem, and as long as we continue to contribute money to allow infringements, more infringements are coming, soon.

I will not comply, my ass.

Lastly, a bit of silliness from the AK crowd: The AK-47 Fruitcake Test, not the name of a 1960s rock band, but an actual AK-47 firing test using a fruitcake.

Loads.

#1  The left has taken note of Adolph Hitler's success in confiscating firearms. They will keep making inroads where they can. Gun control and ultimately gun confiscation will always be on their agenda.

The AK-47 Fruitcake test is impressive (LOL). Should you be on the receiving end, if you are not killed by a 7.62×39mm round, you will be killed by a piece of fruitcake.

#2  (browser ate my work, so linkless and short)

That 7.62xrumnuts, interesting. I don't I'd have the nerve to not remote fire that.

This Ain't Hell has an archive of Master Batesmen stating a guy's bulg got him hot and bothered, then ranted on why someone would need a firearm at a restaurant. The comments are excellent.

Senator Leyonhjelm (Australia) make the remark to ABC (hattip IOTW) how if Lindt had happened in the USA, somebody would likely have had a weapon of some sort - knife, pepper spray, handgun - to even the situation.

The TV series Best Defense has an episode dealing with bad guys entering the restaurant during your chicken fry.

#3  I heard that with that musuem who thought they would have to return all the historic firearm displays (donated) on account of the new law, somebody offered to perform the check pro bono so the museum could keep the collection.

Party says Bouteflika’s mental ability intact, will continue in power
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
... 10th president of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third or fourth term. Maybe it's the fifth. He'll likely die in office of old age...
's mental and cognitive faculties are intact and he will continue to govern, the ruling FLN party's chairman said on Friday, in comments aimed at quashing rumors over the ageing leader's health.

Bouteflika, 78, suffered a stroke last year that put him into a French hospital for months and fuelled speculation over whether the former independence fighter would step down and make way for a transition in the North African state.

"The president's motor skills are reduced because of the neurological accident, but he leads the country with his mental faculties and cognitive abilities and those are intact," the FLN ruling party leader Amar Saadani told Rooters on Friday.

DON’T wear the veil, Saudi cleric reiterates on TV
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Saudi holy man caused massive controversy this week when he said on a prominent television program that contrary to what some Moslems believe, women are NOT required to wear the niqab (face veil) and are allowed to use make-up and other beauty products.

To further strengthen his argument, Sheikh Ahmad al-Ghamidi brought his wife UNVEILED to last Saturday's "Badria," a talk show hosted by the renowned Saudi media personality Badria al-Bishr on Al Arabiya's sister channel, MBC. (Episode can be watched here).

Ghamdi, who is a former head of the Holy City of Makkah's branch of the Saudi Committee for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (commonly known as the Religious Police), was discussing a fatwa (religious edict) which he had issued previously, permitting women to show their faces and wear make-up.

Ex-Jubo Dal leader killed ‘over control of extortion racket’
[Dhaka Tribune] Former Jubo Dal leader Afzal Hossain Sattar alias Gola Kata Sattar was killed by hired hitmen over the control of the tannery industry extortion racket in the Hazaribagh area of the capital.

"A hired shooter killed him according to the direction and planning of top criminal Sanjidul Islam Emon, while he [Emon] was in jail," Lt Col SM Masud Rana, commanding officer (CO) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 2.

He said Sherlocks were suspecting that Emon's motive to incite and coordinate the killing was to establish his supremacy in the extortion of Hazaribagh's tannery businesses.

The RAB 2 CO said information about the motive for the murder was obtained following the arrest of Md Masud Rana, 33, a prime suspect and First Information Report-listed accused.

"RAB tossed in the clink
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Masud Rana from his father-in-law's house in the capital's Shewrapara neighbourhood around 5:30am yesterday," he said.

"Masud mainly worked as the coordinator of the killing mission and did it because Sattar, together with three of his brothers, killed Masud's elder brother in the Nawabganj area of the capital in 1996," said Lt Col Masud.

Thirty-seven -year-old Sattar, a former president of Ward 48 of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal and a raw-hide trader, was rubbed out in broad daylight in the Jigatola Tin Mazar Mosque area on December 14. A case was filed with Hazaribagh cop shoppe.

The plan to kill Sattar was hatched six months ago when the dear departed was out of jail on bail.

Top criminal Emon inspired Masud to carry out the Dire Revenge killing, the CO said at a press briefing at the RAB office in the capital's Agargaon area.

Masud, along with another accused, Ibrahim Khalil alias Bulu, watched Sattar for the last four months following Emon's suggestion. Both stayed in contact with Emon continuously about the killing mission over their cell phones, the RAB 2 CO said.

They tried repeatedly to kill Sattar during the last four months, but failing to do so, gave the job to Goni, a hired shooter.

Masud told RAB he came to know that Goni was a trained shooter from Bulu, according to the RAB CO.

"On the day of the killing, Masud set up Monir, Rajat, Rana and Taposh at different spots of Jigatola. Goni was in the front-line. Sattar was shot point-blank by Goni and was struck down in his prime," the Lt Col Masud said.

"Emon and Sattar worked together before 2005 and both are accused in a number of cases. The dear departed, Sattar, was an accused in at least 15 criminal cases including murder, robbery and extortion," he said.

After 2005, due to a massive drive against criminals by law enforcers, Emon and his associates went into hiding and crossed the border. The police's Criminal Investigation Department brought Emon back to the country from India in 2007. At that time, a conflict also arose between Sattar and Emon and they started working separately, Lt Col Masud said. But he could not say why enmity arose between Sattar and Emon in 2007.

RAB and the police are keeping an eye on Emon's men because he is believed to be in control despite being in jail, Lt Col Masud said.

Obama Apologizes to Castro
Cuban communist leader lectures Obama for 30 minutes.

Barack Obama apologized to Cuban president Raul Castro during their phone conversation after the American commander in chief's opening remarks. Speaking to reporters at his final White House press briefing of 2014 Friday afternoon, Obama gave more details about his phone call with the communist leader of Cuba earlier this week before the announcement of a change in U.S. policy on the Caribbean island nation.

Obama began the phone call with Castro with what he described as 15 minutes of opening comments. It was the first conversation between the heads of state in both countries since 1961.

"I apologized for taking such a long time," Obama said. Castro responded by reminding Obama that the American president was still young enough to beat Castro's brother, former Cuban president and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, who once gave a 7-hour-long speech.

According to the president, Raul Castro proceeded to speak to Obama uninterrupted for 30 minutes.

Putin says ‘he is loved and loves in return’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] President Vladimir Putin let slip during his annual news conference Thursday that he "loves" and is loved in return, but refused to reveal the identity of his mystery partner.

A young female journalist from a provincial television channel put the question to Putin, saying that "the friends of my aunt" had all badgered her to find out the relationship status of "Russia's top bachelor".

"Give a big hello to your aunt's friends, thanks for such attention," Putin said smoothly, before going into a long spiel about mortgages.

But he then returned to his love life, bizarrely recounting a conversation he had with a friend he described only as a top boss in Europe.

-- "Listen, do you have a love?" the friend asked.

-- "In what way?" Putin responded.

-- "Well do you love someone?"

-- "Well yes."

-- "And does someone love you?"

-- "Yes."

-- "Well thank God."

The friend was so pleased at the news that he "downed a vodka," Putin said.

The Russian leader refused to give any more details, only reassuring his supporters: "Everything is in order. Don't worry."

Putin has been linked to Alina Kabayeva, a former Olympic rhythmic gymnast 31 years his junior who until recently was an MP in Russia's ruling party.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea Far-Left Party Dissolved for 'Backing N. Korea'
[AnNahar] South Korea's nascent far-left political party was disbanded Friday in a rare decision by the constitutional court which condemned it as a pro-North Korean group.

In an 8-1 decision, judges endorsed the government's petition to disband the Unified Progressive Party (UPP) and ordered the forfeiture of all of its five seats in parliament.

The court ruled the party's platform ran counter to the basic democratic order of the constitution by supporting North Korea's ideological doctrine.

"I hope today's decision will terminate the time-consuming ideological debate in our country," Park Han-Chul, the court's chief judge, said before reading a verdict.

The court was tightly guarded by about 1,000 riot police as hundreds of people from rival groups gathered in the nearby streets, according to images broadcast on television.

About 200 conservative activists, including some veterans clad in military uniforms, hailed the court's decision, waving national flags.

Across the street, some 400 UPP members demonstrated against President Park Geun-Hye, accusing her government of trampling over democratic principles.

"Today the constitutional court opened a dark age with an authoritarian decision," said UPP leader Lee Jung-Hee, who ran in the presidential race in late 2012 and made a big splash in a televised debate with a personal attack on Park.

The leftist party has been at the centre of political debate since UPP politician Lee Seok-Ki was incarcerated

last year on charges of plotting an armed revolt in support of North Korea.

The politician, who is on trial, was accused of seeking to "revolutionise" the South in pursuit of North Korean aims.

The main opposition Democratic Party approved of his arrest but opposed the cabinet petition.

Economy
Oil rebounds despite worries about ample supplies
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Oil prices rebounded sharply Friday from the prior day's dives, despite concerns about abundant global supplies and weaker economies in Europe and China.

West Texas Intermediate for January delivery leaped $2.41 to close at $56.52 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, more than wiping out Thursday's loss that hit a fresh five-year low.

Brent North Sea crude for February delivery, the international benchmark, settled at $61.38 a barrel in London, up $2.11 from Thursday's closing level.

"I think the facts that have driven us to these five-years low are still the primary drivers on the market, those being the global oversupply and the [weakened] economic conditions in China and Europe that are curbing crude demand," said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy in a market note.

"But we are in temporary oversold conditions, and we're heading into the final weeks of the year, and we see traders that are making profits on short positions."

Oil has shed about half its value since June, and a decision in November by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to maintain output levels despite falling prices has weighed on the market.

"The petroleum markets continue to chop sideways within the recent trading range, having located some buying interest at the fresh five-year lows reached this week," said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.

For Evans, Friday's rebound in part was a "simple portfolio rebalancing, with traders judging that there's less downside risk and perhaps somewhat more upside potential from current levels, at least relative to where prices were at any point over the past six months."

Turkish PM halts traditional gift giving in bid to boost economy
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said the government has decided to drop a traditional practice of giving gifts during official events as part of plans to boost the economy, Turkish news agency Cihan reported Thursday.
Ummm... Boost the economy by not spending money?
“We are suffering serious waste in government spending due to gift giving, and local authorities should drop it from this day forward,” Davutoğlu told a press conference in Ankara.
Y'mean he's only referring to govt officials bribing each other?
Davutoğlu said the decision comes as part of an eight-step reform package to maintain sustainable growth.
Step one: form a committee. Step two: Set salaries for the committee...
He added that the new measures would raise Turkish gross domestic product (GDP) to $2 trillion by the year 2023.
Most of the gain will be seen in 2022. Look for it.
On Thursday, the lira struck a low in value of 2.41 lira to the dollar and 3.03 to the euro - breaking through the crucial 3.0 barrier. The currency rallied, strengthening to 2.32 lira per dollar and 2.87 to per euro on Thursday.

The Most Dangerous Nuclear Threat No One Is Talking About
[National Interest] While Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs are all the rage these days, the most dangerous nuclear threat facing the world continues to go largely unnoticed.

Namely, China and India are both on the cusp of deploying multiple independently targetable reentry (MIRV) vehicles on their ballistic missiles, a development that is likely to have profound, far-reaching consequences for the region and beyond.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF Grants Entry Permits For Christians In Gaza, West Bank In Honor Of Christmas
[Ynet] Paleostinian-Christians to receive permits to visit family outside of Gazoo and West Bank starting December 19th; up to 200 will travel abroad as part of holiday season 'good faith' gesture.

Some Paleostinian-Christians will be able to temporarily visit family outside of Gazoo and the West Bank this holiday season, an IDF Spokesperson's Unit statement said Thursday.

As part of the easing of restrictions in light of Christmas, up to 200 Paleostinian-Christians living in Gazoo and the West Bank will be allowed to travel abroad by way of Ben Gurion Airport during the upcoming Christmas holiday.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit announced that in a decision agreed upon by Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon and outgoing Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, the IDF will carry out "confidence-building measures" with the Christian-Paleostinian population of Gazoo and the West Bank in light of the holiday season.

Along with additional IDF forces and police presence to ensure "smooth and fast" entry into Bethlehem for visitors during Christmas, temporary permission will be given to Christian Paleostinians from Gazoo and the West Bank to leave the territory and visit family and partake in religious ceremonies starting on Friday, December 19th until January 19th 2015.

The announcement revealed that Christian-Paleostinian from the West Bank would be given long-term entrance to Israel during the holiday season without a quota.

Furthermore, 700 Paleostinian-Christians living in Gazoo will be able to visit family living in Israel or the West Bank. In this category some provisions apply ? the entry permits will only be valid for residents ages 16 and under and 35 and over, while men between the ages of 16 to 35 will only be allowed entry permits following a security check.

Furthermore, 500 Paleostinian-Christians from the West Bank will be allowed entry into Gazoo to visit family following a security check.

Lastly, 200 Paleostinian-Christians from Gazoo and the West Bank will be given permission to travel abroad by way of Ben Gurion Airport in coordination with the head of the District Coordination Office and following an individual security screening.

Also noted in the announcement ? border crossings will be open extended hours during the next month in tandem with the expanded entry permits.

In 2009, there were an estimated 50,000 Christians living in the Paleostinian territories, with about 30,000 Christian-Paleostinians living in Gazoo and about 127,000 Christian-Arabs living in Israel.

NASA approves SpaceX path towards crewed Dragon debut
NASA has approved SpaceX’s first Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) milestone. Known as the Certification Baseline Review, the milestone covers SpaceX’s plans for the design, manufacture, integration, launch and recovery of the crewed Dragon – through to her test flight – with the goal of achieving certification to launch NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

While the near-term importance of returning a domestic crew launch capability to the United States is obvious, the funding to achieve that goal has been placed on a low calorie diet when compared to some of NASA’s more obese flagship projects, such as SLS, Orion and even the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

This is mainly due to the challenging allocation of NASA’s numerous budget lines, within the outlined program of record goals, all of which is heavily influenced by political direction.

This slippage also results in a “Catch 22″ scenario where hundreds of millions of addition dollars is being sent to Russia to cover the ever-increasing gap in NASA’s crew launch requirements.

Soyuz seat purchases are also expected to continue through the early phase of commercial crew flights, providing the contingency of a back up option.

Gunman kills self after 2 NYPD cops fatally shot ‘execution style’ as ‘revenge’ for Garner
[NYPost] Two uniformed NYPD officers were shot dead Saturday afternoon as they sat in their marked police car on a Brooklyn street corner — in what investigators believe was a crazed gunman’s execution-style mission to avenge Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

The tragic heroes were working overtime as part of an anti-terrorism drill when they were shot point-blank in their heads by the lone gunman, who approached them on foot from the sidewalk at the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins avenues in Bed-Stuy.

“I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today,” a person believed to be the gunman wrote on Instagram in a message posted just three hours before the officers were shot through their front passenger window.

Yes, he was.
