CNN's Sara Sidner hit by rock in Ferguson, Mo.
[Variety] CNN reporter Sara Sidner was pelted in the head with a rock as she reported live from the streets of Ferguson, Missouri on Monday night.

Sidner was standing across the street from a local business that had recently caught on fire when an anonymous person hit the CNN reporter in the head as she spoke remotely to anchor Jake Trapper.
Friendly fire incident.
Gives a good sense of the mob reaction when they weren't given their scapegoat.

Exploding Excrement Topples Building In China, 15 Injured
[AnNahar] A cesspool filled with excrement has went kaboom! in central China, injuring 15 people and knocking down a building, state-run media reported.

The blast was apparently sparked by a local man burning waste close to the cesspool, igniting methane gas which was emanating from the pit, the Xinhua news agency said late on Sunday.

The incident in Zhangjiajie city, in the central province of Hunan, caused a residential building to collapse and three of the injured had to be hospitalised, Xinhua said.

China's urban infrastructure has often been hastily built with little regard for safety as hundreds of millions of people have moved from the countryside to cities in recent decades.

In another excrement-related incident, a man and his mother both died trying to retrieve his wife's new mobile phone -- worth 2,000 yuan ($320) -- from a toilet septic tank, reports said in May.

The man jumped in to try to locate the phone but was overcome by fumes and passed out, according to Dahe, a web portal run by the provincial government in central Henan province.

Ammonium nitrate or methane in it?
There came an explosion from the cesspit
Sprayed a light shade of brown
The building came down
Leaving 15 Chinese in shit.

And while serious, it's a little absurd

The residents of Zhangjiajie city
Don’t look very pretty

Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Not Indicted
[StLouisCBS] FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOX) â The grand jury in the investigation into the shooting death of Michael Brown has announced its decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of the unarmed 18-year-old.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch said,"They determined that no probable cause exists to file any charge against Officer Wilson, and returned a 'No True Bill' on each of the five indictments."
USA Today adds this brief description of the crowd reaction:
Crowds of protesters filled streets near the Ferguson cop shoppe following the announcement. At least one police car was set on fire. Reporters on the scene said they heard gunshots and saw bricks being thrown, and that police responded with tear gas. Police said they were using smoke bombs and pepper spray.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Monica Lewinsky says she'll never change last name: 'I'm not ashamed'
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Monica Lewinsky of White House intern fame -- and presidential mistress infamy -- told a reporter that she would never change her last name, no matter how tarnished her reputation. "No one else in the investigation had to change their name," she recently told Porter magazine, the New York Post reported. "Why should I? I use aliases at times to protect my privacy, but I'm not ashamed of who I am."
Let's try this from a different direction: is there anything that could conceivably make her feel ashamed?
In the interview, she said she spent 16 years in hiding after her sexual dalliances with former President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment over lying. And she also seemed to suggest that it was the Internet, rather than her actions, that ruined her reputation and made her post-White House life difficult.
Couldn't possibly have been anything she ate did...
Ms. Lewinsky, 41, is now an advocate against cyber-bullying, and in October at a Forbes Under 30 Summit referred to herself as "Patient zero -- the first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the Internet."
It wuz the innernet. It wudn't me.
"For a long time, I didn't realize the implication of simple things, like looking for an apartment," she told Porter. "Now when I fill out a form I have to think, 'Will somebody go to the press with my private information?' I graduated from the London School of Economics with a master's in social psychology. I had been job-hunting with little -- really, no -- success. It was at that point that I began to realize how much damage had been done to my reputation -- what had been taken from me."

US Stockpiling Ebola Survivors’ Plasma to Treat Future Patients
[Wired] Emory University Hospital will begin stockpiling blood plasma from Ebola survivors, treated with a pathogen inactivation system that’s never been used before in the United States, the company that developed the technology announced on Friday. So far, the US has had some amazing success in curing Ebola, possibly thanks to experimental plasma treatments. Drawn from survivors, the stuff comes enriched in antibodies that could help to fight off the disease—but it also has the potential to carry other diseases, like malaria, that are common in west Africa where Ebola is raging. The new system will kill off any extra contaminants that may be lurking in this potentially live-saving serum.

Tunisia presidential vote heads into close run-off
An official under former hardline ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali appears set for a close run-off in Tunisian presidential polls with a rival who says he represents the 2011 "Arab Spring" uprising that toppled him. Preliminary results in the country's first presidential ballot since the uprising are expected later on Monday. But the parties of two frontrunners said initial tallies showed they would face off in next month's second round.

The presidential poll is a step in Tunisia's sometimes rocky transition since its uprising prompted the overthrow of long-ruling leaders in Yemen, Libya, Egypt and Syria. Tunisia's progress and political compromise between rival Islamist and secular rivals contrasts with warring factions in Libya and the army overthrow of an elected Islamist president in Egypt.

One frontrunner, Beji Caid Essebsi, who was parliament chief under Ben Ali, has cast himself as a veteran technocrat. He will face off with Moncef Marzouki, the current president who has warned against return of "one-party era" figures like Essebsi.

The run-off will likely be tough with both candidates hunting for backing from the liberal, left-wing and Islamist parties that emerged after the end of Ben Ali's one-party rule in one of the Arab world's most secular nations.

Essebsi and other former Ben Ali officials say they are not tainted by the abuses of the past administration. He says he will be looking to consolidate his secular Nidaa Tounes party's win in last month's parliament elections when they beat Islamist Ennahda party into second place. Ennahda won the first election after the 2011 revolt.

"This confirms our win in the parliamentary vote, and that gives us more confidence about the second round," Lazhar Akremi, a Nidaa leader. "It's too early to say who will side with us, but we are reaching out to all Tunisians."

Marzouki, a former rights activist, has called the election a race to stop the return of the old regime. On Sunday after the poll he challenged Essebsi to a televised debate as part of his campaign to "beat the old regime machine".

Votes of Ennahda supporters will play a key role in the second round as the Islamist party positions itself for a part in the new government formation or as the main opposition. It has so far backed no presidential candidate.

Russia Loses $40 bn from Sanctions but Putin Says Damage 'Not Fatal'
[AnNahar] Russia is losing around $40 billion (32 billion euros) per year due to Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict, its finance minister said Monday although President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
dismissed the economic damage as "not fatal".

"We are losing around $40 billion per year due to geopolitical sanctions," Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in a speech at an economic forum in Moscow, quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.

He added that falling oil prices were causing Russia economic damage of "some $90 to $100 billion per year".

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and the United States have imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia over its role in the Ukraine conflict, sending the ruble plunging and inflation soaring.

The embargoes targeting Russia's key energy, defence and finance sectors have been compounded by sliding crude prices.

But Putin insisted that the plunging ruble would only hurt the Russian economy "to an extent, but not (cause) fatal" damage.

In Sunday's interview with TASS news agency, he stood firm over the Ukraine issue, saying that Russia is "right" and that its "strength comes from the truth".

Putin also rubbished a Western blacklist of Russian officials and businessmen from his inner circle, saying that the decision to impose sanctions on those individuals in an attempt to hurt him was based on a "false premise".

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday accused the West of attempting to achieve "regime change" in Russia through sanctions aimed at destroying the economy and rousing public protests.

Russia has retaliated by imposing an embargo on most food products from the United States, Canada, Australia, Norway and the European Union. Food prices have noticeably risen in recent weeks.

- 'I say look at the oil prices' -
Russia's finance minister on Monday sought to play down the impact of sanctions on Russia's economic woes, saying it is crude prices which is the key determinant.

"The oil price has fallen 30 percent since the beginning of the year. By the way, the ruble has also fallen the same 30 percent... I say look at the oil prices. However they behave, the ruble exchange rate will too."

The ruble has fallen to a series of record lows against the dollar and euro during the conflict in east Ukraine before rallying a little this month after the European Union decided not to impose yet another round of sanctions.

On Monday at around 1100 GMT, the ruble was trading at 44.80 to the dollar and 55.54 to the euro.

Russia is likely to record capital outflows of $130 billion, Siluanov said, as citizens and businesses hedge against the falling ruble by converting their savings in the Russian currency to foreign ones.

Energy minister Alexander Novak had said Friday that Russia was considering cutting its oil production in a bid to shore up prices.

He said that Russia did not have the technical means to quickly lower and raise production like Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
but that the government was studying the "expediency of such methods."

A major producer of crude oil, Russia is not a member of the OPEC oil producers cartel, which is to discuss later in the week whether to cut output.

OPEC's poorer members, led by Venezuela and Ecuador, have called publicly for a cut in output, while Iran has also hinted at a need to reduce production. But the cartel's Gulf members, led by kingpin Saudi Arabia, are rejecting such calls unless they are guaranteed market share, according to analysts.

Kommersant business daily on Monday cited a Russian government source saying that Venezuelan foreign minister Rafael Ramirez had suggested cutting production when he visited Moscow last week.

"We had thought about it before but it did not gain much support. The situation changed last week," the source said.

Russia gets around half of its revenues from oil profits. Its budget for next year, passed by the lower house of parliament on Friday, is based on an oil price of $96 per barrel.

Crude prices have however fallen below $80.

Artillery duels, fighting continues in Donetsk and Lugansk

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the main non-government organization charged with monitoring the ceasefire in southeastern Ukraina, reported that they found a Ukrainian rocket artillery launcher unit inside the "security zone" Monday, according to a news account posted by the Russian language Ukrainian news outlet korrespondent.net.

According to a report by the official Russian news agency TASS, the OSCE observers located the launchers just outside of the city of Debalstevo Friday. They were described as BM-27 220mm "Urugan" rocket artillery launchers, among the heaviest of that type of Russian artillery launcher available.

The find is a violation of the September 5th Minsk Ceasefire Agreement which said both sides must withdraw all artillery units 100mm or larger 15 kilometers from a demarcation line set last September 19th. The reasoning behind that part of the protocol is that the requirement would eliminate all but light mortars being used inside the zone. Sometime this week both sides are supposed to withdraw all forces the same 15 kilometers from the demarcation line, and the rebel forces are supposed to disarm, an extremely unlikely eventuality at best.

Both sides have been repeatedly violating the Ceasefire Agreement , with both sides accusing the other for starting the firing and then responding.

Ukrainian artillery units have been pounding Donetsk city since last summer, presumably firing at militia targets but hitting, repeatedly, residential areas.

Donbas rebels reported their artillery hit the Ukrainian held settlements of Peski and Avdeyevka in the afternoon and evening of November 22nd.

For their part, Ukrainian artillery units hit Petrovsky, Leninsky, Kuibyshevsky and Kievsky districts of Donetsk from Peski, Avdeyevka, Tonenkoye, Orlovka and Karlovka using 152mm artillery and 122mm BM-21 rocket artillery launchers.

Rebel militias reported Ukrainian artillery strikes in the Donetsk residential areas of Putilovka, Biryuzova and Krasny Pakhar, and in the suburbs of Vesyoloye, Lidievka and Spartak.

Damage was recorded in the artillery strikes, but no one was reported hurt.

Over the weekend Donetsk city officials reported 12 wounded by artillery fire.

OSCE reported on its website that rebel artillery units also have been shelling Debaltsevo since last Thursday. The OSCE mission said a 122mm rocket artillery strike hit residential and commercial areas on November 21st at around 2239 Moscow time, and again Friday at 2230 hrs Moscow time. Both artillery strikes lasted about five minutes.

An unidentified Ukrainian commander at the army headquarters in Debaltsevo said that seven civilians were wounded in Thursday's artillery strike.

A subsequent artillery strike was reported by local security officials at around 2330 hrs, which lasted about 30 minutes. The OSCE report said the artillery came from Fashchivka (65 kilometers northeast of Donetsk), which is rebel held territory.

According to information supplied by Voice of Sevastopol, rebels reported last Friday intense attacks on Ukrainian positions in Debaltsevo with Ukrainian artillery units shelling the Lugansk settlements of Nikishino, Petropavlovka and Chernukhino from Debaltsevo.

As reported before, much of the artillery activity in Donetsk city centers around the airport, which Ukrainian units have held since last summer. Much of the airport up until the ceasefire was controlled by Ukrainian military units, but a slow motion campaign by Donbas rebels has reduced the area the Ukrainian Army controls to the new terminal.

Donbas rebels at the airport claim that the Ukrainians left last week and that the airport was fully in the hands of the rebels. The commander of the "Somali" Battalion, identified only as "Givi" gave an interview to local reporters saying the airport belonged to the militias and that the artillery being fired repeatedly there and in Donetsk city was sited "15 to 20 kilometers" away.

According to reports from commanders on the ground at the airport, and as seen in videos taken there, the Ukrainian military tried a counterattack ten days ago with four tanks and three BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles in an attempt to take the fire tower located directly next to the runway.

Donbas rebels reported driving back the attack and destroying two BMPs and one tank. The video shows Donbas rebel riflemen using WWII vintage PTRD antitank rifles to engage the Ukrainian T-64 tanks used to attack their positions.

At the moment, according to the pro rebel Voice of Sevastopol, the Ukrainian military still holds on to the new terminal and is continually rotating soldiers in and out of the location using armored vehicles.

A report posted on korrespondent.net said that 44 fighters from the Ukrainian 95th Airmobile Brigade were placed on 24 day leave, and would return to the airport. The 95th Airmobile Brigade is one of several Ukrainian Army units heavily battered in the summer's fighting in Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts.

Voice of Sevastopol reports that some elements of the Ukrainian 79th separate Airmobile Brigade left the airport for Nikolayev on Friday.

Fighting in Lugansk

Friday Ukrainian artillery units hit Stakhanov and Pervomaysk with 122mm rocket artillery throughout the day, and fighting was reported in Faschevka.

Infantry fights and artillery strikes were recorded all along the T1301 highway just south of the Northern Donetsk River, particularly at the Ukrainian held Checkpoint 31.

Rebels report as of November 23rd, the Ukrainian held bridgehead at Schastye is partially encircled form the north, northeast and east, which if true, with the river at its back leaves Schastye fully invested by rebel combat units. Rebel reports are that they have been shelling the city with artillery rockets and mortars.

Northeast of Lugansk city, rebel units reported attacking Ukrainian positions at Stanitsa Luganskaya and at Verkhnyaya Olkhovaya. Earlier last week, rebel units said one of their attacks drove Ukrainian units deeper into Stanitsa Luganskaya, and now the fighting between the two combatants is nearly constant.

According to a rebel report: "On November 22 there were alarming reports about shelling of the outskirts of Lugansk by Kiev security forces with SPG (73mm recoilless rifle), AA guns (probably twin 23mm autocannons) and tank shells from the positions of the Ukrainian military near Stanitsa Luganskaya.

SpaceX’s Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship ready for action

The mystery behind the "floating platform"-- set to welcome home a returning Falcon 9 v1.1 first stage -- has been solved via a series of fascinating comments by SpaceX's Elon Musk. Known as the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship, the ocean faring platform will be the new propulsive landing target for a Falcon 9, possibly as soon as the CRS-5/SpX-5 Dragon mission in December.

Returning Rockets:

SpaceX is currently working through an incremental evolution of its reusable rocket aspirations, continuing a path that should eventually result in the first Falcon 9 v1.1 core stage returning to land and being processed for a future launch.

Normally, first stages can only look forward to a one-time push uphill, ahead of the prospect of a watery grave in the ocean downrange of the launch site.

Mr. Musk classes the odds of successfully landing on the platform at 50 percent or less for the first attempt.

Landing a core stage on the platform would be a major achievement. However, Mr. Musk appears to have yet more plans for the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship.

"Will allow (for) refuel and rocket flyback in future," he added to the unveiling of the ship.

While that fascinating detail hasn't yet been expanded on, it suggests a plan -- or at least the option -- to land stages on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship, refuel and then allow them to make the hop back to land. This would also show the additional value of the continued testing with F-9R Dev-2.

Such a technique could also solve a rumored note surrounding the Falcon Heavy, which suggested SpaceX had been looking at an island downrange of the West Coast launch site for returning the center of the three Falcon Heavy cores, in the event of high payload penalties negating a return to the preferred landing site at SLC-4W.

Returning a stage to an Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship positioned downrange of Vandenberg, allowing it to refuel and make the "hop" back to the West coast would become a potential solution.
