[IN.REUTERS] Four Afghan Taliban jacket wallahs died when a group of the forces of Evil tried to storm an international zone in Kabul on Wednesday in the latest high-profile assault aimed at foreign targets in Afghanistan.
The attackers tried to break into a complex known as Green Village, starting with the kaboom of a van at the gate of the heavily guarded area in eastern Kabul that houses foreign contractors and various facilities.
Security forces repelled them after about an hour of fighting and no casualties were reported among the area's residents, officials said.
Attacks on foreign troops, Afghan government officials and security forces have intensified as the international military coalition ends operations, leaving the fight against the Taliban insurgency mostly to Afghan forces.
"Four suicide bombers have been killed, there was no harm to civilians," said deputy Interior Minister General Ayoub Salangi. It was not immediately clear how the attackers died.
"Since the Green Village had been targeted several times in the past, the place was heavily guarded and the attackers failed to reach their intended target. Only one guard was maimed," said Interior Ministry front man Sediq Sediqqi.
The Afghan Taliban, ousted from power by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001, have been staging almost daily attacks in Kabul and grabbed credit for the latest assault.
"Suicide bombers attacked the invading forces' base called the Green Village," their front man Zabihullah Mujahid said by text message. "The attack began with blowing up an exploding car and other fighters, armed with heavy and light weapons, arrived at the area and started the shootout."
A Western security source at the Green Village told Rooters there had been between four and six kabooms.
Another Western security source said the attackers failed to get inside but their grenades went over the wall and hit Green Village premises. They may have also fired rocket-propelled grenades, the source said.
The Green Village is one of Kabul's most heavily guarded compounds, surrounded by layers of tall grey blast walls and multiple security check points.

[Libya Herald] It is reported that Adel Ghariani, the head of the political department of the Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room, was maimed today in fighting with Zintani forces near Gwalish, south of Kikla and some 30 kilomtres south west of Gharian.
Although serious, the injury sustained by Ghariani is not thought to be life-threatening.
Meanwhile an officer at the Zintan Operations Room said that fighting had been taking place at Bu Sheiba, east of Bir Ghanem, with Ghariani and Zawia units of Libya Dawn ...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar... . He said that his forces were "holding up" and were expecting air force support.
There was fighting in Bu Sheiba over a month ago but the Zintanis pulled back, supposedly, they claimed, to concentrate forces on capturing Kikla. Libya Dawn claimed at the time it was because they were forced out.
The Zintani officer also said Libya Dawn forces had yesterday tried to take the Wattayah airbase on the road from Jmail to the Jebel Nafusa, controlled by the Zintanis. Forty vehicles carrying Libya Dawn forces had arrived at the base but had been driven back, he claimed.

[Libya Herald] Clashes have continued across Benghazi despite a twelve-hour humanitarian ceasefire brokered by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
"A ceasefire beginning at 7 am was like an invitation for Ansar to start attacking at that time", one resident in Benghazi's Bel Awn district told the Libya Herald. She explained that in her area inhabitants had witnessed some of the most intense festivities they had seen in recent days.
UNSMIL said the ceasefire was announced by its head Bernardino Leon and had been agreed to by the "different parties to the conflict in Benghazi". The "unconditional humanitarian truce ..The purposes of a truce are twofold: 1.) bring up more arms, ammunition, and reinforcements; and 2.) get the enemy to relax his vigilance. A truce is not the same thing as a ceasefire, and a ceasefire doesn't mean you have to stop shooting... " was scheduled to begin at 7 am local time for a period of 12 hours. Residents reported fighting in Benghazi from 7 am onwards.
The truce was described by the UN as being critical in "giving the people of Benghazi a much-needed reprieve from violence". Had it held it would have given the Libyan Red Islamic Thingy time to evacuate civilians and retrieve bodies.
A front man for the Libyan National Army (LNA) Mohammed Hejazi told this newspaper that pro-government forces had been unable to keep the truce in the face of aggression from Ansar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... and its allies. "We acted in defence," he said.
Hejazi said that in Bel Awn six members of Ansar al-Sharia had been killed in festivities with government forces. He said fighting had also taken place in Hawari, Sabri and around Benghazi University.
Hejazi explained that the LNA had agreed to the ceasefire on humanitarian grounds and had coordinated with the Libyan Red Islamic Thingy and the UN. The army did not enter into direct negotiations with Ansar al-Sharia. he said. "They are criminals and we will not negotiate with them," he added.
The LNA confirmed its participation in the ceasefire in a statement released by the Chief of Staff's office. The statement said the truce had been managed by the UN with the support of British Special Envoy to Libya Jonathan Powell.
Spokesman for UNSMIL Samir Ghattas explained that the truce had been extended to all areas in Benghazi affected by recent fighting. He said the UN had used "channels direct or indirect involving the Shoura Council, Chief of General Staff's office and the Red Islamic Thingy" but explained that the UN "does not deal with Ansar al-Sharia".
Beyond its obvious refusal of the truce, Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC), of which Ansar is a part, has been ambiguous in its response to the UN overtures. A front man for the Islamist coalition told Bowabat Al-Wassat that an official response was still being coordinated after fighting had resumed.

[MAGHAREBIA] Military authorities sent 4,500 special operations and infantry forces to repel any infiltration attempts in Bordj Badji Mokhtar.
The army command also reportedly hired 218 Bedouin and Touareg footprint trackers to support troops protecting the 1,800-kilometre long southern border between Mali and Niger, in Tamanrasset and Adrar provinces. This is in addition to flying night sorties to track terrorists' suspicious movements.
The decision was made after the army command received a report indicating an alarming increase of terrorism-related crimes. The report talked about violent, international networks engaged in smuggling arms and individuals along the Mali border, as well as in Tamanrasset and Illizi.
Army forces stationed on the borders recently thwarted infiltration attempts by terrorists.
The latest operation on Saturday (November 8th) netted al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) figure Ouhli Abdurrahman, alias Abou Alqama al-Nidjiri.
During the action in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, ANP troops killed several terrorists. Dozens more have been eliminated in recent months.
The security measures implemented on the borders came in the wake of warnings about the possible infiltration of pro-Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Interpol warned Algeria to be on the lookout for suspected ISIS fighters that may cross international borders, El Khabar reported.
Unofficial estimates indicate that 200 Algerians have joined ISIS. Official figures put the number at 80.
But according to a military official, Algeria has taken all necessary measures to prevent any infiltration by ISIS.
"Algeria's southern and eastern borders are secure," said Brig. Gen. Mohammed Saleh Asrik of the ANP Chiefs of Staff Command.

It said Shahine's assignment was to "train Islamist elements in the production and use of explosives", and that his arrest had led to five terrorist cells being dismantled.

[WASHINGTON.CBSLOCAL] A man was arrested near the White House by Secret Service after a .30-30 rifle and ammunition was found in his car.
R.J. Renae Kapheim, a 41-year-old from Davenport, Iowa, approached a Secret Service checkpoint at 15th and E Street and said that someone told him to go to the White House, according to CBS News.
He then took Secret Service agents to his car where they found the .30-30 rifle and ammunition in the trunk.
Kapheim was arrested for possession of a firearm.

[DAWN] GUJRAT: The police claim to have nabbed Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! a murderous Moslem leader who was involved in killing two religious figures after kidnapping them for ransom a few years ago.
The arrested man, Hafiz Wajid of Gujrat's Kotla Arab Ali Khan area, had been a leader of the defunct Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (Asmatullah Moaviya group), the police claimed.
The suspect, along with his five accomplices one of who was already in the Gujrat jail in connection with the assassination cases, had kidnapped homeopath Dr Naqi Husain Shah in the Lalamusa Saddar police precinct in October 2009 and demanded a ransom of Rs10 million from his family.
The turbans killed the kidnapped man and dumped his body which is yet to be discovered as the file of the case had been closed for being an "untraced case".
Hafiz Wajid also kidnapped Mubarak Ahmad, an Ahmadi, and his servant Sikandar Mahmood in the Gojra Saddar police area of Toba Tek Singh district in 2010. They later freed the servant and demanded Rs20 million for the release of Mubarak who was later brutally killed and his body was dumped in Gujrat.
The same group had kidnapped 10-year-old Afaq Ahmad from Kunjah, Gujrat in 2011 but left the boy after meeting with an accident while speeding away.
District Police Officer Rai Ijaz Ahmad confirmed the arrest of the key member of the outlawed outfit and said a co-accused in the case, Afzal Fauji, was already in Gujrat jail. The police had interrogated both the suspects who, the DPO said, made some revelations which could lead to arrest of other members of the group.
Police sources said the complainants in all the kidnap for ransom cases had been told about the murder of the kidnapped men but the locations where the suspects had dumped the bodies were yet to be identified.
The families of the kidnapped men, they said, hoped against hope that they might be alive somewhere in the tribal belt of North Wazoo Agency prior to the confessional statement by the suspect that he had killed both the men.
The suspect had once been the head of the TTP (Asmatullah group) in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... and was working on organising the group. The Gujrat police on Tuesday presented him to the court of an area magistrate where the suspect confessed to the killings.
He was handed over to the police for a day's physical remand and is scheduled to be presented before the Gujranwala Anti-Terrorism Court on Wednesday for seeking further remand.

The Pirabad police said that 35-year-old Adeeb Abbasi, a head constable, was sitting at a general store near his home at Badar Chowk when two gunnies emerged there, fired at him and fled. He sustained two bullet wounds in the head and shoulder and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead He's dead, Jim! .
Investigators found two empty bullet casings of .30-bore and 9mm pistols from the spot.
The victim was posted at the Mominabad cop shoppe.
His brother, Nadeem Abbasi, also a policeman, was bumped off in Manghopir in 2013, said Pirabad SHO Nasir Mehmood.

The tribe has had mustache-cursing relationships with several other tribes, including the Zakkakhel and Kambarkhel, and with the Mullagori. They make welcome most anyone with a turban and automatic weapons, but every once in awhile they get together a tribal lashkar to mollify the government... areas of Tirah valley, killing seven bully boyz and destroying three of their hideouts.
The claim could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, ...back at the argument, Jane reached into her purse for her .38... sources in Mehraban Kalay of Tirah valley said that a man was publicly killed by bully boyz on a charge of spying.
The incident is second of its kind in the area in less than a week.

In Bara, personnel of Khasadar force found bullet-riddled bodies of two men.
They were taken to Levies Centre in Shah Kas for identification.
Sources in Bazaar Zakhakhel area said that an activist of the pro-government Tawheedul Islam group was killed in Nari Bara.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Arclight airstrike believed to have been carried out by the U.S.-led coalition overnight hit a town controlled by al-Qaeda Death Eaters in northwestern Syria, activists said Wednesday.
Harem, on an important smuggling route to Turkey, is controlled by al-Qaeda's Syrian branch, the Nusra Front. U.S. aircraft bombed Nusra Death Eaters near Harem last week.
The strike was reported by the Local Coordination Committees and the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, both of which gather information from local activists. The Britannia-based Observatory said the strike hit near an empty house and killed two Nusra Front fighters.
If confirmed, the strike would mark the fourth time that coalition aircraft have targeted the al-Qaeda affiliate in the U.S.-led aerial campaign against the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. The U.S. military says the attacks against the Nusra Front have targeted the so-called Khorasan group, which Washington says is a special cell within Nusra that is plotting attacks against Western interests.
Inside Syria, activists and rebels dismiss the U.S. attempt to distinguish between the two, saying they are one entity. Many analysts also question the distinction.
The U.S. says it isn't coordinating its aerial operation in Syria with Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Horror of Homs... , whose own air force has been pummeling opposition-held areas from the sky since the international coalition's campaign began in late September.
The Observatory said Wednesday that Syrian aircraft have carried out nearly 1,600 Arclight airstrikes since Oct. 20. It said at least 396 people,
...some portion of whom were no doubt jihadis and other rebels out of uniform...
including 109 children, have been killed in those strikes.
On Wednesday, a government strike hit the northeastern city of Raqqa, controlled by the Islamic State group, killing at least nine people, the Observatory and local activist Fourat Alwfaa said. Alwfaa said the killed were civilians.
Another strike hit the town of al-Hara in southern Syria, killing eight people, including four children and a woman, the Observatory said. An activist group in Daraa also reported the strikes, but offered no casualty figures.

Also on Wednesday, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said that "close to 50" French citizens have been killed fighting alongside Death Eaters in Syria, according to Agence La Belle France-Presse.
A government source told AFP the precise number, as of Monday, was estimated at 49.
"We know the number of Frenchies, more than a thousand, who are involved in this phenomenon," Valls said after a security meeting in Beauvais, north of Gay Paree.
