Doctors Without Borders Ignored Geneva Rules Before U.S. Air Attack
[Daily Caller] Doctors Without Borders flew no internationally-recognized medical insignia on the rooftop of its Kunduz, Afghanistan, hospital that was mistakenly attacked October 3 by U.S. military aircraft, according to a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation.

The relief group -- also known as Medecins Sans Frontiers -- failed to display a Red Cross, Red Crescent or Red Lion and Sun, the universally recognized medical emblems since 1949 that identify buildings that must be protected to attacking aircraft during wartime under Article 38 of the Geneva Accords.

"Doctors Without Borders marked the roof of the building in the week prior to the Oct. 3 airstrikes," said Tim Shenk, a DWB press officer. "The markings are hospital flags with the MSF logo."

The DWB hospital flag with the organization's logo is not among the internationally recognized emblems that warn attacking pilots to avoid the marked structure.

The DWB refused to produce any aerial photos of the building or describe the size of the purported flags.

An earlier aerial photo taken months before the attack shows a barren rooftop without any medical emblem or insignia.

#1  Just for reference, here is what a MSF logo flag looks like: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/dam/assets/131010175518-14-nobel-peace-horizontal-gallery.jpg

I went looking on Google for aerial view images of red "thingy" emblems on hospital roofs - and there is nary a one such image - although there are some images of US military tents with big red crosses.

If I worked in or near a hospital anywhere in the Middle East, I would make damn sure that it had a red SOMETHING on its roof. Failing to do so is basically equivalent to asking for a Darwin Award.

Taliban Car Bomb Targets British Military Convoy in Kabul
[AnNahar] A Taliban suicide boom-mobileer struck a British forces convoy in central Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
Sunday, triggering a powerful kaboom in an attack that comes two weeks after the resurgent turban group overran a key northern city.

The rush-hour bombing, which sent a plume of smoke into the sky, maimed at least three civilians including a child, as the Taliban ramp up attacks on government and foreign targets.

The intensity of the blast sent an armored vehicle crashing into a sidewalk, its front end badly mangled, and left the area littered with charred pieces of twisted metal.

"The incident took place while a suicide boom-mobileer detonated an explosive-packed car in the Joy Shir area... of Kabul city," the interior ministry said.

"The target of the attacker were the foreign forces convoy."

Security forces cordoned off the area as ambulances with wailing sirens rushed to the scene, but the ministry said the human toll of the blast was limited.

"The ministry of interior condemns in the strongest terms the suicide kaboom which resulted in the wounding of three civilians," it said.

The Kabul police said the maimed included a woman and a child.

The British defence ministry confirmed that their military convoy came under attack in Kabul but said the kaboom was caused by an improvised bomb.

"There were no (British) casualties," it said in a statement.

The emboldened bully boyz have stepped up attacks around Afghanistan since they launched their annual summer offensive in late April.

The Taliban captured the northern city of Kunduz on September 28, their most spectacular victory since being toppled from power in a 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

The seizure of the scenic provincial capital for three days was a stinging blow to Western-trained Afghan forces, who have largely been fighting on their own since the end of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
's combat mission in December.

The Taliban said Sunday's bombing was carried out to avenge the recent "barbaric bombardment in Kunduz that martyred our civilians and doctors."

- 'War Crime' -
NATO forces are under fire after a U.S. air strike on October 3 pummeled a hospital in Kunduz run by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), killing at least 12 staff and 10 patients.

The medical charity shut down the trauma center, branding the incident a "war crime" and demanding an international investigation into the incident, which sparked an avalanche of global condemnation.

The Pentagon announced Saturday it would make compensation payments for those killed or injured in the strike, while suggesting that U.S. forces in Afghanistan could also pay for repairs to the hospital.

But MSF Sunday said it had officially not received any compensation offer, adding that it would not accept funds for repairs in line with its policy of rejecting support from governments.

"The offer of compensation at this stage cannot preempt the result of present and future investigations, nor preclude any further claims or rights of those affected by the U.S. Arclight airstrike," the charity said.

"MSF reiterates its call for independent investigation."

President Barack Obama
Because I won...
has apologized over the strike, with three different investigations -- led by NATO, U.S. forces and Afghan officials -- currently under way.

The Afghan government claims to have wrested back control of Kunduz city but sporadic firefights continue with pockets of bully boyz as soldiers, backed by NATO special forces, conduct door-to-door clearance operations.

As fighting spreads in neighboring Badakhshan, Takhar and Baghlan provinces, concerns are mounting that the seizure of Kunduz was merely the opening gambit in a new, bolder strategy to tighten the insurgency's grip across northern Afghanistan.

Most NATO combat troops pulled out of Afghanistan last year but a small contingent focused on training and counter-terrorism operations remains, including roughly 10,000 American soldiers.

Suspects planning Moscow terrorist attack nabbed
[RFE/RL]Russian officials say they have arrested a group of people planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Moscow. The National Antiterrorism Committee said that "criminals" were arrested at an apartment in western Moscow, where security forces found and defused an improvised explosive device. It is not yet clear what, if any, broader organization the suspects might belong to.

Putin has cited the dangers of Daesh militants attempting terrorist attacks in Russia in defending his decision to carry out air strikes in Syria. He said in a television interview broadcast on Russian television that the threat of terrorism in Russia "had already existed" before Moscow began bombing targets in Syria.

The Grand Turk
Two Turkish Soldiers Killed in Kurdish Rebel Attack
[AnNahar] Two Turkish soldiers were killed in eastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in an attack blamed on Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) murderous Moslems, a day after the rebel group declared it suspended all offensive operations, media said.

The soldiers were killed during festivities with PKK turbans in the Senkaya district of Erzurum province, the Dogan news agency said, citing the local governor's office.

A wide-scale operation was launched to capture the murderous Moslems, it added.

The PKK announced it would suspend all attacks -- except in self defense -- after months of attacks in Turkey, a move seen as an attempt to help the pro-Kurdish People's Democracy Party (HDP) boost its score in the upcoming election on November 1.

The announcement came shortly after twin kabooms in Turkey's capital Ankara on Saturday that killed at least 95 people who had gathered for a peace rally organized by leftist and pro-Kurdish opposition groups.

330-plus Paleos injured in protests
Palestinian riots continued to rock the West Bank and Gaza Sunday, although the number of participants among them are dwindling as Israeli Security Forces clamp down on unrest.

The Red Moon-Shaped Thingy Crescent, the main emergency medical service organization in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said that 332 Palestinians were wounded in clashes with security forces on Sunday alone.

All in all, 51 Palestinians in the West Bank were injured by live fire from Israeli security forces, 71 by rubber bullets and six suffered from burns. In the Gaza Strip, 32 people were injured in clashes with security forces.

Hamas senior official, Ismail Radwan, said that his organization was alarmed about the tactics Israeli forces were using to control violent demonstrations in the coastal enclave.

"Israel is committing massacres against the Palestinian people," Radwan said.
Totally uncalled for, since all your people are doing is stabbing Jooz, right?
"An innocent civilian's house was bombed which killed a woman and her child" Radwan added, referencing a retaliatory strike Israel conducted Saturday evening after earlier rocket fire emanating from the Gaza Strip landed in the Ashkelon regional council. No injuries or damage was reported in the attack.

Nur Hassan, 31, along with her infant daughter were both killed in the Gaza strike.

Meanwhile, the Arab League granted a request by the Palestinian Authority and will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss recent events centering on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A PA representative who made the request said that discussions will focus on Palestinian grievances, particularity al-Aqsa mosque, in an effort to stop "radical Zionists desecrating it under the auspices of occupation forces."

Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Heli said that an important decision will be made during the emergency meeting "in light of the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people."

He added that "we will discuss what steps should be taken by the Arabs against Israel, which violates Jerusalem's holy sites in an unprecedented way."
I'm sure the Israelis are super-worried about the response of the Arab League...

Israeli and Palestinian casualties as clashes continue unabated
[Ynet] Rock ambushes, terror attacks and violent confrontations continue to be daily occurrences, as tensions show no sign of easing.

Clashes continued in Israel and the West Bank on Sunday, with violence erupting both between large groups and on an individual scale.

Four Israelis, including two soldiers, were maimed on Sunday evening when a resident of Umm al-Fahm ran some of them over and stabbed others. Earlier in the day, a Paleostinian driver went kaboom! a gas canister at a checkpoint in the West Bank Sunday morning, lightly wounding a police officer who pulled her over.

Overnight on Saturday, an Israeli air strike on a Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, target in the Gazoo Strip following a rocket attack. The strike brought down a nearby house, killing a Paleostinian woman and her daughter. According to Paleostinian reports, a 13-year-old Paleostinian was killed on Sunday.

Clashes and protests
Simultaneously, festivities between Paleostinian and security in the West Bank continued. Paleostinians reported that 13-year-old Ahmed Saraja from Jalazone refugee camp near Ramallah was killed near the Beit El checkpoint.

Other communities in the Arab sector were holding violent protests. Perhaps the main focus was the village of Kafr Kanna, in the Lower Galilee, where dozens, some masked, gathered and burned tires. There was a heavy police presence.

Police were stopping all vehicles arriving at the entrance to the village asking the occupants if they were Jews. If the answer was yes, they ordered them to make a U-turn in order to avoid the scene of conflicts.

Other villages where rioting took place included Reinae, where dozens of tires are burning in the village square. In Tur'an dozens have gathered at the entrance to the village, some of them masked. In Majdal Krum and Daburiya, tires were burning.

Barrage of stones
"If I had not been protecting my head, I do not know where I would be today," Yedidya Zelinger said, recalling the barrage of stones he received on his way to Kiryat Arba on Sunday night. Zelinger and other people, including a tourist, were lightly maimed by stones thrown at them near the village of Beit Ummar.

Zelinger said he saw 20 young Arab men approaching him on Highway 60. "They threw huge blocks at the car at point-blank range," Zelinger said.

"I felt like I was in a shooting range," he said. "They were masked, with death in their eyes. I always thought that throwing rocks was something light, but when it actually happens it's crazy."

#1  I think its time for Israel to napalm the entire West Bank and Gaza Strip. When the fires die out, plow the area and start selling lots. There are, and should be, consequences for behavior. The more outrageous the behavior, the more dire the consequences should be.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Regime Advances with Russian Air Support
[AnNahar] Syrian government troops backed by Russian air strikes advanced against rebels Sunday, as a rights group accused Moscow of being behind a new type of cluster bomb in the conflict.

Twelve days into Russia's aerial campaign, the troops were gaining ground on two fronts: in central Hama province around the Damascus-Aleppo highway, and in the northern part of regime stronghold Latakia province.

In Hama, regime forces have taken three villages east of the highway and are now seeking to also secure control of an area to its west.

"This offensive is intended to confront the rebels in the Sahl al-Ghab plain that is at the intersection of Hama, Latakia and Idlib provinces," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor.

live in the south and west of the strategic 1,000 square-kilometer (385 square miles) plain, while the north and east are mostly Sunni.

In recent months, rebels have sought to capture parts of the area, advancing particularly from Idlib province, which is held by the Army of Conquest alliance that includes Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front. Control of the plain would threaten regime-held areas in Hama and also Latakia, which is both a stronghold of the regime and home to Assad's ancestral village.

In northern Latakia meanwhile, regime forces took the village of Kafr Dalba as they pressed a bid to capture a strategic mountainous area in the region, the Observatory and sources on the ground said. Earlier this week, a military source said government troops wanted to seal off Idlib province from Hama and Latakia and prevent rebels from being able to threaten either region.

meanwhile on Sunday accused Russia of being behind the use of new advanced cluster munitions in Syria. The New York-based group said it had obtained photographs showing cluster munitions were dropped on Kafr Halab, a village southwest of Syria's second city of Aleppo, on October 4. It said it could not confirm whether the munitions had been used by Russian forces, or supplied by Moscow but used by Syria.

"It's disturbing that yet another type of cluster munition is being used in Syria given the harm they cause to civilians for years to come," said Nadim Houry, HRW's deputy Middle East director.

"Neither Russia nor Syria should use cluster munitions, and both should join the international ban without delay."

Cluster munitions contain dozens or hundreds of bomblets and are fired in rockets or dropped from the air. They are widely banned because of their indiscriminate nature and the fact that they often maim and kill long after the original attack.

HRW said there was also evidence the munitions had been used in Hama and Idlib provinces.

The Russian air campaign that began September 30 has complicated the efforts of the existing US-led coalition bombing IS in Syria. Washington and Moscow have sought talks on ways to avoid military accidents in Syria's increasingly crowded airspace. On Saturday, Washington said the two countries had made "progress" in the talks and that more discussions were planned.

"The discussions were professional and focused narrowly on the implementation of specific safety procedures," Pentagon front man Peter Cook said after the 90-minute video conference.

Cook disclosed few details, except to say that the discussions took place between U.S. defense officials and their counterparts in Moscow and focused on "steps that can be taken" by Russian and U.S.-led coalition aircraft "to promote safe flight operations over Syria".

Seems like the Russians campaign is effective.

If the Russians help end the civil war, will they be given credit for stopping the killing?

#2  If the Russians help end the civil war, will they be given credit for stopping the killing?

No, because Obama doesn't like Assad and he's just a bit peeved with the Russians for not letting his own $500 million buddies get that credit.

Russia Hit 63 Targets in Syria as Putin Says Not Planning Ground Op
[AnNahar] Russian fighter jets hit 63 targets in Syria in the past 24 hours, the defense ministry said Sunday, as Moscow intensifies a campaign it says is aimed against the Islamic State

jihadist group.

"Su-34, Su-24M and Su-25SM planes carried out 64 sorties from the Hmeimim airbase against 63 targets in the provinces of Hama, Latakia, Idlib and Raqa," the defense ministry said in a statement.

The Russian military claimed that the air strikes had destroyed 53 positions used by the "terrorists," as well as a command post, four training camps and seven ammunition depots.

Russia said its campaign in the war-torn country was rattling IS fighters, claiming that radio intercepts showed "growing panic" among them.

On Saturday, the defense ministry claimed that fighters were running low on arms, ammunition and fuel, leading them to abandon their combat positions for the country's east and northeast.

reiterated that Russia was not planning on sending ground troops to Syria.

"We are not planning on doing this, and our Syrian friends know about this," Putin said.

Putin last month received parliamentary approval to launch an air campaign in the war-torn country, but authorities have staunchly denied they would send any ground troops.

Putin said Sunday that the Russian operation's objective was to "stabilize the legitimate authorities and create conditions for finding a political compromise."

Speaking of the weaponry used in the strikes -- including cruise missiles Russia fired from the Caspian Sea at targets more than 1,500 kilometers (900 miles) away -- Putin dismissed the idea that Russia was in a "arms race" with the West.

"This is not about an arms race," he said. "This is about the fact that modern weapons are improving, changing. In other countries, this is happening even faster than here. This is why we have to keep up."

Putin brushed off criticism by the U.S.-led coalition that the Russian air force was not providing it with sufficient advance notice prior to conducting strikes.

"I want to draw attention to the fact that nobody has ever warned us in the planning and beginning of operations of this kind," Putin said. "But we did."

As I see it, there are four possibilities.

(2) Russians are lying.
(3) Americans are lying.
(4) Both are telling the truth.

Militants Killed, Injured in Heavy Army Shelling of Arsal Outskirts
[AnNahar] Several bully boy holy warriors were killed or injured Sunday as the army opened artillery fire at their positions in the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal, state-run National News Agency reported.

It said the shelling targeted bully boy gatherings and movements in Wadi al-Kheil near the al-Qarn Hill.

"The bombardment became much fiercer after the holy warriors started moving in Wadi al-Kheil, Wadi al-Oueini and Tallat al-Furn, where large numbers of al-Nusra

jihadists are positioned," NNA added.

The army managed to destroy a convoy of military and construction vehicles that were operating in the region, killing and wounding several bully boys, the agency said.

The bully boys' dead and maimed were transferred to field hospitals in Wadi Hmeid and Wadi al-Kheil.

"The army is continuing its artillery bombardment and has brought reinforcements into the town" of Arsal, NNA added.

IS and Nusra holy warriors are entrenched in the mountainous border area near Syria and have used the arid terrain to launch attacks on Lebanese security forces.
