Iraq
Barzani in Cairo over Turkish troops
An Iraqi Kurdish member of the US-backed Iraqi Governing Council arrived in Cairo on Saturday for talks with Egyptian officials over the deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq. Massoud Barzani, who also heads the Kurdistan Democratic Party, is heading a delegation of five KDP members for talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher, intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, and Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa. An Arab League official said that Barzani, who arrived in Cairo from Kuwait, is expected to discuss to discuss Turkey's planned deployment of 10,000 peacekeeping troops to Iraq. The Iraqi Governing Council has rejected the Turkish proposal, expressing fears that peacekeepers from neighbouring countries could end up interfering in Iraq's internal affairs.
Not that the Arab League or Egypt is in a position to do anything about it. But this could be a bad sign. I don't want to see us split with the Kurds — I'd have just given the whole country to them to run.

#1  Agreed. I think Don Bardzini's unhappiness is justified, but you're right: he's wasting his time in Cairo. This is almost a betrayal of the Kurds - and they are the brightest lot in Iraq, by a wide margin. It seems a foolish move to risk their trust for such a pittance -- which may also be a Trojan Horse loaded with mischief and trouble or become a target for reprisal and revenge. Methinks No Turks makes far more sense.

#2  Me think that too, but the lousy way the US handled the matter and their request of troop aid put our government in a position to stretch out a hand, just say you don't need our troops anymore and case can be closed.

#3  we don't need your troops any more. Case closed. Buh-bye. Oh, and that NATO thing? Over.
