Grand Mufti orders HoR dialogue to stop
[Libya Herald] The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Sadik Al-Ghariani, has condemned yesterday's UN-sponsored meeting in Ghadames between active members of the House of Representatives and those boycotting its sessions in Tobruk. He has ordered the latter to stop taking part in the dialogue, at least until the Supreme Court rules on the legitimacy of the HoR.

It has been reported that the court would make a pronouncement on 8 October although it is thought that this may be delayed.

The delegates on both sides of the HoR divide yesterday agreed to resume their discusions immediately after the Eid Al-Adha holiday.

Libya Shield's post-Ghadames ambivalence may mark cracks in Dawn alliance
[Libya Herald] In what may signal a rift between the revolutionary brigade and its partners in the Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
Operation, Libya Shield
...a conglomerate of pro-Islamist militias deployed across Libya. It reports to the Libyan defense ministry and is organized like a real army unit. Its commander used to head a Benghazi brigade called Free Libya Martyrs...
has said it remains open to involvement in any further potential peace talks.

Speaking on Libya Al-Ahrar yesterday, Mohammed Hideyah, the front man for Libya Shield, said brigade commanders had formed no official opinion on UN-hosted peace talks in Ghadames.

Hideyah stated that the Misrata-based force was neither for or against joining the negotiations.

The clarification has been seen as a direct response to a statement released earlier in the week by Libya Dawn, the coalition of Islamist-leaning forces with which Libya Central Shield

Libya Dawn has said no negotiations could stand as an obstacle to a military solution to the current stand-off. It has insisted that its operations alone would maintain the legitimacy of the February Revolution.

Egypt Offers Military Training To Libya, Cites Islamic State Threat
[Ynet] Egypt has offered to train pro-government forces battling rival gangs in Libya, stepping up efforts to eradicate what it says is a threat to its own stability from the anarchy engulfing its neighbour.

The offer was the latest sign of intervention by competing Arab powers in Libya - a haven for Islamist murderous Moslems and close to becoming a failed state - while Western governments are preoccupied with Iraq and Syria.

Arabia
U.S. Plans Patriot Missile Sale To Saudi Arabia, Long Range Artillery To UAE
[AnNahar] The United States plans to sell Patriot missile batteries to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
worth $1.75 billion and long-range artillery to the United Arab Emirates valued at about $900 million, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The Defense Department informed Congress of the potential arms sales this week as fighter jets from both of the Gulf states took part in a U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group in Iraq and Syria.

The Saudi government had requested the purchase of 202 Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC)-3 missiles -- the most sophisticated version of the Patriot anti-missile weapons -- as well as a flight test target, telemetry kits and other related equipment, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.

"The proposed sale will help replenish Saudi's current Patriot missiles which are becoming obsolete and difficult to sustain due to age and the limited availability of repair parts," the agency said.

"The program will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a partner which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East," it added.

Both Kuwait and Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
already have purchased the PAC-3 weapons, which are designed to knock out incoming ballistic missiles as well as enemy aircraft and cruise missiles using ground radar.

Gulf countries in recent years have invested heavily in missile defense weapons, radar as well as air power, mainly as a hedge against Iran which they view as a regional threat.

The Patriot missiles, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, have an estimated range of up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) and have more advanced radar than the older systems.

Separately, the Defense Department notified politicians about a planned sale of 12 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) Launchers to the United Arab Emirates for nearly one billion dollars.

The system "will improve the UAE's capability to meet current and future threats and provide greater security for its critical infrastructure," the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said. The weapons, which deliver precise and powerful artillery fire at a long range, would also bolster the UAE military's ability to operate with U.S. forces, it said.

Congress has 30 days to raise objections to the potential arms sales. Without any move to block the deals, the U.S. government can then negotiate contracts with the two countries.

Britain
UK Drops Terror Charges against Ex-Guantanamo Detainee
[AnNahar] British prosecutors on Wednesday dropped seven terror charges against former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg relating to the conflict in Syria.
Offered to spy on his fellows for the Crown? How very public spirited of him, to be sure.
The 45-year-old has been in jug since March awaiting a trial, which was due to start on Monday, but is now expected to walk free following his formal acquittal.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) made the dramatic announcement during a pre-trial review at the Old Bailey court in London, where Begg was appearing via video-link from the high security Belmarsh prison.

"The prosecution have recently become aware of relevant material and in light of which, after careful and anxious consideration, have reached the conclusion that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction in this case," prosecuting lawyer Christopher Hehir said.

In response, Judge Alan Fraser Wilkie said: "On the indication of the Crown offering no evidence verdicts of not guilty should be entered."

Begg was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in February at his home, accused of providing terrorist training between October 2012 and April 2013, and funding terrorism between July and August 2013.

His arrest caused headlines because of his high profile, and police conceded that questions were now going to be asked about why he was charged in the first place.

Born in Britannia, Begg fought in Bosnia in the 1990s and moved with his family to Afghanistan in 2001.

He was detained in Pakistain in January 2002 and spent nearly a year at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, before being sent to the notorious U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba until his release without charge in January 2005.

Returning to Britannia, he became director of a human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
organization, CAGE, and a vocal critic of the rights of those detained under the so-called "War on Terror".

After the Arab Spring, he visited Syria twice, as well as Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, to conduct what he said were investigations into the British government's role in human rights violations, according to CAGE.

His lawyer Ben Emmerson said he made no secret of his visits to Syria but was not guilty of terrorism.

"Mr. Begg did not train anyone for the purposes of terrorism as defined in the 2001 act," Emmerson told the court.

"Mr. Begg says he was involved in training young men to defend civilians against war crimes by the Assad regime."

Australian Parliament Passes Counterterror Laws
[Ynet] The Australian Parliament has passed a raft of counterterrorism laws that extend secret service powers despite some politicians' concerns about its impact on press freedom.

The National Security Legislation Amendment Bill, which became law on Wednesday, gives greater search and surveillance powers to the nation's domestic spy agency, Australian Security Intelligence Organization.

The most contentious section of legislation carries a potential 10-year prison sentence for anyone who discloses information that relates to a "special intelligence operation."

removed from power.

"We will fight effectively against both ISIL (Islamic State)and all other terrorist organizations within the region; this will always be our priority," Erdogan said, according to the text of his speech at the opening of parliament.

"We will (also) continue to prioritize our aim to remove the Syrian regime, to help protect the territorial integrity of Syria and to encourage a constitutional, parliamentary government system which embraces all (of its) citizens."

Backing words with action, Turkish police on Wednesday detained three students suspected of being IS sympathizers following festivities at an anti-jihadist campus protest at Istanbul University, reports said.

Police stormed the university's faculty of humanities and science in Istanbul's Beyazit district after Islamist students armed with sticks and stones attacked another group protesting against IS.

Three students were detained after being identified by police as IS supporters because they were wearing black masks and hats during the fight earlier Wednesday, Hurriyet newspaper reported on its website.

"We are Moslem students. Long live Moslem students. We Moslems are one body," they reportedly chanted during the protest.

Dozens of riot coppers as well as armored vehicles and water cannon trucks were deployed around the university after the early morning raid.

Istanbul University has in the last few days been the scene of festivities between leftist students denouncing the brutality of the IS jihadists and the group's sympathisers.

On Friday, an anti-IS protest turned violent when masked assailants attacked a group of students with sticks studded with nails. One student was injured in the head when a glass bottle was thrown at him.

India-Pakistan
Traffic chaos amid ASWJ protest against 'extrajudicial killings'
[DAWN] KARACHI: Hundreds of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ) activists converged on the Gurumandir traffic intersection to stage a protest demonstration against 'extrajudicial killings' and the 'illegal arrest' of their party workers on Tuesday.

The traffic system in parts of the city was paralysed during the protest following the abrupt closure of key link roads.

The demonstration that began in the afternoon continued even after sunset despite repeated requests by authorities to call off the protest.

The workers were addressed by their leaders, including Allama Aurangzeb Farooqi, who condemned what he described as 'state terrorism
... any action taken by a non-Moslem state that constrains the violent impulses of Moslems or their allies ...
' against his party.

"We organised a sit-in on Friday and called it off only on assurance of authorities that they would pay heed to our demands and address our grievances," said the party front man. "But nothing has happened yet. Instead more ASWJ workers have been picked up by the law enforcement agencies. The law enforcement agencies are continually arresting innocent youngsters and killing them in fake encounters. The fresh sit-in will continue till something credible is seen on the ground."

During the protest, the ASWJ announced that the workers would march on CM House, causing police and traffic authorities to take immediate measures.

After the blockade of roads leading to CM House and Governor House, the traffic system in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's south district began to unravel and worsened with time.

"We enhanced deployment in the affected areas to help road users divert to alternative routes," said DIG of traffic Dr Amir Sheikh.

"Obviously the alternative routes are not wide and big enough to carry the traffic flow at the evening rush hour and that too in south district which has hundreds of commercial centres. So ultimately it led to gridlock at some intersections."

India criticised for sabotaging efforts for Siachen peace
[DAWN] The Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, has criticised the Indian military establishment for sabotaging all efforts for peace in Siachen.

India, he said, had consistently rejected all proposals made by Pakistain for peace in Siachen, even in the aftermath of the Giyari tragedy.

He was addressing the troops during a visit to Siachen along with members of the committee.

About two and a half years ago, an avalanche had killed 140 soldiers and officers of the army in Giyari.

The delegation laid a wreath at the monument for the deaders of Giyari.

According to a blurb, Mr Hussain expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
over consequences of climate change and global warming which has adverse consequences in Siachen because of freak weather incidents like the Giyari avalanche.

Iraq
Iraqi Kurds Look to Sky for Breakthrough against IS
[AnNahar] A truck lies stranded on its side in a no man's land between Kurdish fighters and jihadists ensconced behind minefields, a stalemate the Kurds hope U.S.-led air strikes can break.

Crouched behind a wall of sandbags with a finger on the trigger, an Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighter has the truck in his sights, and the strategic town of Jalawla behind it.

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) jihadists seized Jalawla, at the gateway to Iraqi Kurdistan and on the road to Baghdad, on August 11.

The peshmerga fighters have since failed to make headway in efforts to recapture it.

A trench dug in the ochre earth leads to a forward Kurdish outpost, where some 30 peshmerga in uniforms ranging from camouflage to traditional baggy trousers and large belt are sheltered behind bottle-green sandbags.

"Beware of IS snipers," one of them warns.

Under a scorching sun, a call to prayer sounds from a mosque inside Jalawla. Behind the sandbags, the attitude ranges from vigilance to boredom.

The buffer zone is riddled with mines laid by the jihadists, deterring any Kurdish advance, says Colonel Ali Abdullah.

The Jalawla front is also of strategic importance for its proximity to Iran, with the border a mere 20 kilometres (12 miles) to the east.

"If we don't retake Jalawla, the whole region will be in danger, right up to the Iranian border," says General Jafar Sheikh Mustapha, a military and political chief of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of regional president Massud Barzani.

Two months ago, the IS forces of Evil advanced to an intersection of roads leading to Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.

But by the end of August, the Kurds had forced the jihadists to pull back to Jalawla, 130 kilometres from Baghdad, and the frontline has been frozen ever since.

The retreating IS fighters blew up a bridge, reducing it to a mass of concrete and metal rods. The Kurds built a crossing with boulders and rocks for their 4x4 vehicles.

Entrenched behind the minefield, the jihadists have posted snipers to keep out any sappers.

The only way to break the deadlock is for the U.S.-led coalition to send in its warplanes. "They must bomb here," insists Colonel Abdullah.

- 'Not stronger than Saddam' -
Under fire, they open up with two heavy machineguns, newly delivered by La Belle France as part of the coalition's efforts to back up its air campaign with boots on the ground provided by local forces.

Some of the peshmerga are battle-hardened fighters, while others are new to the front, like 20-year-old Sakar who broke off his biology studies to sign up.

A Russian assault rifle slung over his shoulder and four magazines in the pockets of his bullet-proof vest, Sakar says he received no formal training but in any case knows how to use guns.

A few kilometres away, another Kurdish post dominates the valley but is penned in on three sides by IS-held territory.

"That's an IS car," says one fighter, pointing to a speeding vehicle which leaves behind a trail of dust.

Between exchanges of gunfire, the Kurds are waiting for the coalition to soften up the IS position with air strikes. But the peshmerga, whose name translates as "those who confront death" and with their renown for prowess in battle, are determined to hold on.

"I have fought all my life," says an ageing peshmerga with a heavily creased face. "I fought against (toppled dictator) Saddam Hussein and the IS is not stronger than Saddam."

#1  Since Israel-n-Only-Israel is seemingly the one whom has to surrender like France to the PA, methinks then that Globalist POTUS Obama = USA should have no qualms about unilaterally giving up 1/2-to-3/4's of the Pacific, etc. to Rising China???

Darth is right. Put a fence around it and turn it into a theme park for civil war and hatred. Plenty of room for parking!

#4  I tend to like such charts--probably my engineering bias. I found the chart interesting and useful. It does gives a bird'e eye view of a confusing set of complex relationships. Russia should be in the chart showing a "friendly" relationship for Assad and Iran.

#5  Must be somewhere on that chart where one can klik and start the smallish boxes cascading from the top.

#7  Thanks. Yes it is.

#8  3dc: The graphic is absolutely the best of the bunch of WaPo's 9 attempts. WaPo's 9. The rest are a confusing jumble--maybe more confusing than the Mideast.

Tunisian Youths at Forefront of Syria Jihad
[AnNahar] Tunisian youths disillusioned with the post-revolution era have flocked to join jihadists overseas, making the birthplace of the Arab Spring the top source of imported muscle in Syria.

Since the 2011 revolt that toppled dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and rippled across much of the Arab world, Tunisia has faced a resurgence in activity by previously suppressed jihadists.

About 3,000 Tunisians have gone to Syria since the war began more than three years ago -- accounting for about one-quarter of the imported muscle there, according to U.S.-based intelligence consultancy Soufan Group.

Top men at ISIS sez airstrikes don't have a snowballs chance in hell.
"We've been ready for this for some time," Abu Talha said. "We know that our bases are known because they're tracking us with radars and satellites, so we had backup locations."

The ISIS headquarters that were targeted were emptied out, and ISIS fighters moved their supplies into civilian neighborhoods or buried them underground before the Arclight airstrikes came, the fighter said.

Abu Tahla taunted the interviewers about recent US strikes against ISIS oil refineries, noting that ISIS had other avenues of income besides oil sales. Abu Tahla also said that even if the US managed to push ISIS back in Iraq, it managed to advance in Syria.

#3  "Don't have a Snowball's chance in hell" > Strangez-vous, dats what Current + Retired US Generals + other are claiming.

E.G. CHINESE MILITARY FORUM > EX-CIA CHIEF [USAF Retired] LIKENS US AIRSTRIKES TO "CASUAL SEX".

GEN. Michael Hayden, USAF [Ret.].

IIUC, the "Sex" was good for the ISIS + aligned - US-Allies + US strategic interests, NOT SO MUCH.
LUCKY IFF WE DON'T GET AN STD(S) AFTERWARDS.
