[Tolo News] A group of turbans attacked a Friday market in Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... 's Shindand district early Friday morning.
The market targeted is located near Herat's airport.
There are no official reports on the number of casualties, but a security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that two Afghan military officers and civilian were killed and another civilian was injured in the attack.

[DAWN] A kaboom killed six people and maimed 12 shortly after they left a mosque following Friday prayers in Afghanistan's Baghlan province, a police front man said. Donuts, coffee. Ham, eggs. Chicken, dumplings. Mosque, kaboom.
Jawad Basharat, front man for Baghlan's police chief, said the Friday blast occurred just outside the mosque.
He said it wasn't clear who carried out the attack.
Baghlan is in Afghanistan's north, which is generally less violent than the south and east. About the best expression of a relative term I've seen in a while...
Elsewhere, Din Mohammad Darwish, the front man for the governor of Pashtun-infested Logar province, said four police were killed during a battle with Taliban murderous Moslems on Thursday.

An Egyptian jihadist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda beheaded a Beduin resident of the Sinai Peninsula for allegedly collaborating with Israel, it was announced on Friday.
According to Egyptian defense sources, the group, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis ...Supporters of Jerusalem, the current pen name of al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula... executed the man, 35, whose headless body was found on Friday by residents of the Sinai village of Al-Qaria, just south of the city of Sheikh Zayed.

Sanaa -- Armed rebels shelled Yemen’s state-run television building on Friday as they advanced into Sanaa, sending hundreds fleeing their homes in a dramatic escalation of violence after weeks of fighting and protests, officials and residents said.
Was this before or after the rebels agreed to end the fighting...
The fighting was the worst in years in the capital of the poor Arabian peninsula country and appeared to be the biggest challenge yet to a UN-backed transition to democracy launched after veteran ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down in 2012.
The conflict intensified on Thursday when Shia Houthi rebels clashed with the army on the outskirts of Sanaa, and expanded into fighting mainly between the Houthis and tribesmen allied with Al Ahmar clan, residents said.
Government soldiers were taking up defensive positions around state institutions, residents said, while Houthis appeared to be in control of some northern streets as fighting continued along Thalatheen Street, a major route into the western edge of Sanaa.
The fighting was creeping closer to the private residence of president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi on the northwestern end of Siteen Street, residents said. One of the capital’s main avenues, Siteen starts at the airport in the north and runs all the way to the official Presidential Palace, to the south.
Hadi described the recent assaults by the Houthis as “escalating measures and coup attempts to topple the state”, according to state news agency Saba.
In recent weeks, Houthi protesters have blocked the main road to Sanaa’s airport and held sit-ins at ministries calling for the ousting of the government and the restoration of subsidies cut by the state in July as part of economic reforms.
“Today’s fighting is the heaviest, they are using all kinds of weapons,” one resident living on Thalatheen said.
One military source said around 70 Houthi fighters were killed in fighting overnight, and residents told Reuters dozens of bodies and body parts were scattered in the north and northwest of the capital where the clashes took place.
Houthi gunmen had taken over some army and security checkpoints on Siteen Street and the northwest Al Shamlan district with almost no resistance from government soldiers, residents said. Houthis were patrolling the streets and no government forces were seen nearby, they said.
A senior government official told Reuters the army was following a “policy of restraint” to give UN special envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar a chance to find a way out of the conflict.
What exactly is "restraint" in Arabia? A number five truncheon?
Benomar had a three-hour meeting with Houthi leader Abdulmalek Al Houthi in Saada province on Wednesday which he described as “constructive and positive”, Saba reported.
“They are protecting government installations, and have avoided getting into confrontations with the Houthi insurgents. But that will not last for long,” said the senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The rebels started firing mortars at the state-owned television channel building in Sanaa on Thursday night and the channel said the shelling was continuing on Friday morning.
“The Houthi group is continuing to shell the television building with all kinds of weapons until this moment,” it said in a news alert on its screen on Friday morning. An employee trapped inside the state TV building, which is located near other vital state institutions, said he was hiding in the basement along with dozens of others.
“The shelling on the channel has increased in a terrible way. We are surrounded and the army forces outside are trying to protect the building and fire back at (the Houthis),” he said by telephone.
Yemen TV went briefly off air before resuming its broadcast.
Hundreds of residents were rushing to flee affected neighbourhoods and push towards the south.
“The shells fell on the house next door so I took my wife and kids and went towards the south of the capital. We left everything behind,” one resident said.
Some petrol stations in Sanaa were packed with drivers jostling to fuel their cars with petrol.
Saba news agency cited a security source as denying that the Houthis controlled some residential areas in north of the capital, but he admitted that rebels had attacked security and army checkpoints in the Siteen and Al Shamlan areas.

[VOA News] International airlines have suspended flights to Yemen's capital, Sana'a, following days of heavy fighting between Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ... rebels and Sunni militias that has caused hundreds of residents to flee.
More than 40 people were killed in festivities overnight as rebel Houthi gunnies took over police and military patrol points in several parts of the city.
Yemen state owned media say the rebels shelled a state-owned television station Thursday in an attack that continued into Friday.
Reports say authorities have cut off mobile telephone and Internet connections in the capital, although landlines appear to be working.
The fighting is the most recent in a series of low-level festivities between Yemen's army and the Houthi rebels, which belong to the Zaidi Shi'ite sect.
The Houthis have led a campaign calling for the replacement of the government and economic reforms. Yemen's Sunni-majority government has accused them of being a proxy for Iran, blaming the mainly Shi'ite nation for sparking the unrest.

Details were not immediately available on the deal, which appeared to be the fruit of discussions U.N. envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar has had with Huthi since flying to Saada on Wednesday.
Government representatives also participated in those talks.
The northern area of Sanaa where the airport is located was the scene of fierce festivities on Thursday in which nearly 40 people on both sides were killed, according to various sources.
The rebels, known as Huthis or Ansarullah, appear more determined than ever to step up military pressure on Sanaa to secure their demands: a new government and more power for their community.
The Civil Aviation Authority, in a statement issued overnight, had said international carriers had suspended flights to Sanaa for 24 hours because of the latest violence.
But Turkish and Jordanian aircraft that were already en route before the suspension came into effect were able to land at night and leave again, the official Saba news agency reported.
"Arab and foreign airlines have decided to suspend their flights to Sanaa for 24 hours because of developments in the capital," said the statement carried by Saba.
The move could be extended or reconsidered depending on the security situation.
The rebels, who have been camped north of Sanaa for weeks, belong to the Zaidi Shiite community, a minority in mainly Sunni Yemen but a majority in the remote northern highlands.
They have battled the government for years from their heartland of Saada, complaining of marginalization since the rule of now toppled autocratic president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh ... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it... This week, they rejected an offer from President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi to name a new prime minister and reduce a controversial fuel price rise, two of their core demands.
Analysts say they are trying to establish themselves as the main political force in the region.
The wave of violence intensified Thursday with the advance of rebels on Shamlan suburb north of the capital, and through the night on Thalathin Street linking the area to Imam University, which is run by Sunni fundamentalists.
Fighting then spread to the offices of Yemen's state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
, which was hit by mortar fire, and the three channels were off the air Friday.
The authorities said the rebels managed to advance and "take control of positions of the security forces and the army at Shamlan" and along Thalathin Street.

Early Friday, residents said government forces managed to reclaim some of the positions they lost earlier.
Benomar has been pressing Huthi to ease the crisis and met him late into the night without any initial success, sources close to the negotiations said.
Representatives of President Hadi were also holding separate talks with Huthi in Saada.
Hadi has already agreed to involve the rebels in the formation of a new government to replace the unpopular administration that imposed austerity measures, including a fuel price hike, earlier this year.
But the rebels are also demanding posts in key state institutions.
The crisis has exacerbated an already difficult transition since Saleh's ouster, which has also seen mounting secessionist sentiment in the formerly independent south and persistent attacks on the security forces by Al-Qaeda.

The plans came to light after detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police held seven JMB members, including the outfit's acting chief, from Ashulia Landing Station area in the early hours of yesterday. Ten kilograms of explosive gel, four brass idols, books and leaflets preaching militancy were also recovered from their possession.

[AnNahar] Prosecutors brought formal charges on Friday against three Germans accused of sending money and camera equipment to help the jihadist group Islamic State make propaganda videos.
The accused were identified only as Karolina M., 25, who has been in pre-trial detention since March, as well as Jennifer Vincenza M. and Ahmed-Sadiq M., both 22, who have not been detained.
Karolina M., a German-Polish dual citizen, is married under Islamic law to an IS Death Eater in Syria, prosecutors said.
"For the production of IS propaganda videos she sent him, through middlemen, cameras and accessories worth 1,100 euros ($1,400) in October 2013," they said.
"Shortly after, she traveled to Syria and handed the IS member three more cameras and more than 5,000 euros in cash."
The prosecutors said she returned to Germany and later sent him another 6,000 euros in six tranches, including more than 2,000 euros that the other two defendants had collected.
The three are charged with supporting a foreign terrorist organization.

A Pakistani academic known for promoting liberal views on Islam has been shot dead by gunmen – two years after being accused of committing blasphemy in a speech he made in the US.
Dr Muhammad Shakil Auj, Dean of the faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Karachi, was attacked by two gunmen on a motorbike as he was making his way in his car to a function at the city’s Iranian cultural centre. A junior teaching colleague was also hit and suffered an injury to her arm.
“A bullet pierced through his head, proving fatal,” senior police officer Pir Mohammad Shah told the Associated Press. “We are investigating the killing. It would be premature to state the motive at the moment.”
The 54-year academic was known as someone who had spoken out on many issues in Islam and written several articles. One of the articles had suggested Muslim women should be allowed to marry non-Muslim men. He had also said Muslim women did not need to remove lipstick or make-up before going to prayer.
In 2012, Mr Auj, 54, had complained to police that four colleagues from the university had threatened him and sent him text messages accusing him of blasphemy. They had claimed a speech he had made that year in the US amounted to blasphemy.
One of the academics he complained about had previously held his position within the department. The four men face charges but are currently out on bail, according to reports.

Baghdad -- A series of car bombings in the Iraqi capital killed at least 20 people Friday, officials said, in the second straight day of attacks in Baghdad blamed on ISIS who have seized large parts of the country.
In the day’s deadliest attack, a parked explosives-packed car detonated in central Baghdad’s district of Karradah, killing eight people and wounding 18 others, police said.
Cars later exploded in two outdoor markets, one in the suburb of Nahrawan and the other in the district of Bayaa. The attacks together killed nine people and wounded 23, according to police. Just south of Baghdad, yet another car bomb went off on a parking lot in Mahmoudiyah town, killing three and wounding 10, said police.
Medical officials confirmed the casualty tolls.

Iraqi officials say at least 17 people bit the dust in separate bombings in the capital Baghdad on Friday.
The Baghdad kabooms targeted a mosque and two outdoor markets in several Shia districts. Several cars and nearby buildings were damaged in the blasts.
In another incident of violence, three people were killed in a boom-mobilekaboom in the southern town of Mahmoudiyah.
Separately, eight people bit the dust in a bomb kaboom in the northern city of Kirkuk.

La Belle France carried out its first air strike against the Islamic State group in Iraq Friday, boosting U.S.-led efforts to unite the world against the growing threat posed by the jihadists.
More than a decade after Gay Paree famously refused to back the invasion of Iraq, La Belle France became the first nation to join the U.S. campaign of air strikes in the war-torn country.
"This morning at 9:40, our Rafale planes carried out a first strike against a logistics depot of the terrorist organization (IS)," President Francois Hollande ...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist... said.
His office said the target was in northeastern Iraq, without specifying exactly where, only adding: "The objective was hit and completely destroyed."
French defense ministry sources said two jets dropped laser-guided GBU-12 bombs in the Mosul area.
Kurdish military front man Halgord Hekmat identified the location as Tal Mus, between the city of Mosul and Zumar.
"We are very happy that La Belle France started its raids," he told AFP.
La Belle France, as well as Britannia, had already sent aircraft into Iraq's skies for surveillance missions but Friday's strike was its first against the jihadists.

As security forces and militia, backed by expanding air strikes, battled to regain ground from IS and allied groups, Iraq was rocked by a series of bombings.

TEL AVIV -- Hundreds of the more than 6,000 targets struck from the air during Israel's 50-day urban war in Gaza were from fighter jets delivering one-ton bombs in record time and in close proximity to friendly ground forces. After-action accounts of Operation Protective Edge show unprecedented use of fixed-wing fighters for close air support (CAS) of urban maneuvering troops.
With an F-16 dedicated to every brigade, precision air power provided "pillar of fire" protection for friendly forces fighting less than 350 meters away. That's more than a three-fold improvement, officers here said, from Israel's traditional 1-kilometer safety range for fixed-wing CAS.
"Until this last operation, we attacked in ranges of about 1,000 meters," said Brig. Gen. Amikam Norkin, Israel Air Force chief of staff. In a Sept. 10 interview, Norkin said Protective Edge marked the first time fixed-wing fighters were used as dedicated assets to division- and brigade-level forces.

I just wonder how my favorite current airplane, the A-10 Warthog would have done.
Of course, I don't know if A-10 can carry 1000 lb bombs. But 2 or 3 500 pounders should do the trick.

According to several A-10 forum/websites, I found no mention of 1000 pounders, but a wide variety of 500 pound bombs (both dumb and guided) have been hung on the Warthog.
Couple passes with the chain gun and some Rockeye one wouldn't have any need for the 1000#.
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian Legislative Council member Riyadh al-Raddad, who represents Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, in the Paleostinian legislative body, was sentenced by an Israeli court to one year in prison, according to his family.

The outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) on Friday again rejected an invitation to participate in congressional hearings on the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). The group's spokesman, Abu Misry Mama, said, "We cannot join in any peace process that falls short of our bid for an independent Moro state."
Representative Rufus Rodriguez, chair of the House committee now working on the proposed law, earlier said they want the BIFF's reclusive chieftain, Imam Ameril Ombra Kato and Nur Misuari of the Moro National Liberation Front to participate in the BBL deliberations.
Mama said, "We better keep on fighting the military in the field than engage in any hearing on that draft BBL. That is purely an initiative of the MILF and the government," adding, "We can only tell Congressman Rodriguez thanks for the invitation. None from the BIFF can join the hearings."
Kato, now debilitated, started as chief of the MILF's 105th Base Command, but was kicked out in 2010 due to insubordination and other offenses. Kato, who studied Islamic theology in Saudi Arabia in the 1970's as a scholar of then President Ferdinand Marcos, had issued a communiqué reaffirming their group's firm stand against the GPH-MILF peace initiative.
The draft BBL, once enacted into law and ratified, will pave the way for the replacement of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with a new, more politically empowered Bangsamoro self-governing entity based on the final peace compact between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

[Washington Post] Thousands of Syrian Kurds and Arabs pushed through the Turkish border Friday as they fled the Islamic State's latest advance in Syria. By sundown, the snuffies had taken more than 60 villages in northern Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Islamic State's rapid tear through these villages in recent days, toward the city of Kobane on the Turkish border, prompted calls for international military support, and specifically from the United States, for the Syrian Kurdish fighters.
"We are in desperate need of the American strikes," said Redur Xelil, the spokesperson of the People's Protection Units (YPG), one of the Kurdish groups fighting the Islamists. "There is now an international alliance under American command to fight ISIS. I think it is time to hit them."

[AnNahar] An army checkpoint was attacked by a hand grenade on Friday in Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... , only hours after a roadside kaboom targeted an army vehicle and killed two troops in the Bekaa border town of Arsal.
"An unknown assailant riding a cycle of violence hurled a hand grenade towards an army checkpoint in the al-Omari area in Tripoli's Syria Street," state-run National News Agency reported.
"Army troops shot up the biker but he managed to escape," NNA added.
According to LBCI television, the grenade fell around 30 meters away from the checkpoint, causing material damage.

The developments come in the wake of a deadly kaboom on the army in Arsal, where two soldiers were killed and three others maimed.
Last week, the army carried out raids in Tripoli and arrested a Syrian man accused of belonging to a terrorist organization.
Media reports had recently accused an gang operating in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh of pledging allegiance to the Islamic State and al-Nusra Front Death Eater groups, but the gunnies denied that.
The same group is also accused of being behind several attacks on the army in the city.

The army soon cordoned off the area while a military expert arrived at the scene.
The military police has taken over investigating the incident.
Earlier, media reports said the truck, which was transporting seven soldiers, was attacked in the Wadi Hmeid region.
MTV said that Arsal residents transported the maimed soldiers to hospitals in the area.
Later on Friday, the army fired heavy weapons after detecting movements by gangs in Arsal's outskirts, said NNA.
OTV added that the bomb, weighing 20 kilograms, was remotely detonated.
Friday's terrorist attack came hours after the army said it had locked away Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up! a Lebanese and two Syrians in the area of al-Mesyada in Arsal.
It identified them as Arsal native Bassam Youssef al-Hujeiri and Syrians Ahmed Samir and Fadi Ammar al-Halabi.
The Syrians admitted to belonging to terrorist organizations, the military added.
Arsal, close to the border with Syria, was the scene last month of a major battle between the Lebanese army and jihadists who had streamed across the frontier.
At the end of the festivities in August, the jihadists took with them soldiers and coppers as captive, and two of them have since been beheaded.
