Student wearing military type jacket prompts school lockdown
A student walking in the hall wearing a green military-style jacket prompted a lockdown at a Southington (Connecticut) school on Tuesday. John F. Kennedy Middle School on South Main Street in the Plantsville section of Southington was put in lockdown around 11 a.m.

Superintendent of Schools Tim Connellan told Eyewitness News that a student was walking in a hallway, while others were in class, which alarmed a staff member. Connellan said the staff member described the student as wearing a military style jacket, and notified the school office.

All students were told to return to their classrooms while the school was placed in lockdown, which is "part of the standard operating procedure." The staffer alerted school leaders and they called police. Officers searched the John F. Kennedy Middle School and its surrounding grounds, but police said the initial search "revealed nothing of a suspicious nature."

#2  "No discipline is expected to be taken against the student in question or staffer"
WOW, what an emergency plan they've got. They've evidently planned to go wacko about the wrong thing at random, it's part of the plan.
It reminds me of what was described as the Houston PD's top brass emergency management plan:
"When in danger, when in doubt,
run in circles, scream and shout."

#3  My goodness this caused a flashback.

Shortly after Columbine my son caused a similar incident in 7th grade. He always wore a green coat which his aunt bought for him in an Army Navy Marine Surplus store (in P'town).

Friends of his asked if he was carrying a machine gun so he opened the coat to show that he wasn't and a teacher who was standing there had a conniption fit. My wife was called to school etc. etc. The ass't. principal got well and truly reamed by my wife for being a jerk 8^). My son is 28 now, married, and hasn't killed anyone yet.

The moral of the story is that there have been cowardly assholes at schools for years.

#4  Once you get your head around the idea that 'boys are just maladjusted girls' that is indoctrinated in the (*cough*) College of Education on campuses across the country, you'd begin to understand the mindset of the lemmings that run our school systems. Its basically one big sorority in the first tier education system. The view of the world is thus skewed significantly. Surprise. [notice the lack of calls for 'sensitivity training' in these cases?]

#5  Many parents elect to put their kids in a religious-based school such as Catholic, Christian, Jewish, 7th Day Adventist, etc. or they home school. Discipline, PC, and teacher's unions are not such a problem. Kids that come out of these schools or a home schooling experience tend to do O.K.--usually better than O.K. It can be done.

Sindh's 12th polio case of year confirmed
[DAWN] Soon after Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah resolved during a meeting with the Gates Foundation officials that Sindh would make polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
a thing of the past next year, the province received confirmation from Islamabad on Tuesday that a child, around two years old, became the 12th polio victim from Sindh this year.

Rafia, daughter of Ghulam Hussain, was one of the ill-fated children in the country whose samples had been sent to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad for examination, which confirmed it seven weeks after their arrival.

[ARABNEWS] Asian Games organizers on Wednesday kicked out an Iranian official for sexually harassing a female volunteer and issued strong warnings after two alleged cases in two days.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) banned football equipment manager Amereh Ahmad from Games sites and asked the Iranian team to send him home for verbally harassing the volunteer on Monday.

Also on Wednesday, police were investigating a Paleostinian footballer who was accused of groping a female worker in an athletes' village laundry room the day before. The player was banned from leaving the country.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Sources accuse Zakaraia of serial plagiarism
From The Politico

This news story gives me a chance to address how I go about compiling information for an original news story. I have been writing here and at other places news for more than four years that the paid media does not, will not or cannot cover.

The very issue of plagiarism came up recently in a separate forum.

I rewrite everything. I don't switch a writer's words around: I take the notional concept the writer is trying to express and rewrite the facts as I understand them, not as the original author wants them to be understood.

I do deal with a lot of foreign language press: two years ago Mexican press, and now Ukrainian and Russian language press. It is extremely easy to take what foreign reporters write, copy and paste and adjust the wording if the translation does not make sense, or is not in the Kings' ( or in this case, the Queen's) English. Then post it: "Hey, look what I found!";

I don't do that. As I said before, I rewrite everything. I defy anyone to take all I have written, more the a half million words since 2010, rinse it through Google Translate and show where I have even patch written the text.

You can see previews of my work here by following the links. (Obvious shameless commercial plug)

One other item, as an aside. During the three years I was writing about the Mexican Drug War, I attempted, repeatedly, to get Mexican politicians or even other journalists to respond to my requests for interviews, only to be denied that opportunity. Mexican politicians behave like a teenage girl goth clique.

One example was during the drought in the Mexican sierras at the start of 2012. I wanted to talk to a church group in the sierras of Chihuahua state about the problems there. What I got instead was this:

The Fundacion Tarahumara Jose A. Llaguno works in order to benefit the indigenous communities of the Sierra Tarahumara with education, nutrition and food assistance programs. We are currently giving interviews only to Mexican news.

I replied that they are not getting much press even in Mexico, but this time I got silence.

And that same applies to American politicians and military officials. If you ain't paid, or just a blogger, they don't talk. It's frustrating to be unable to act as a journalist when those people act as if I owe them something.

Anyway...

From TFA:

For the past month, two anonymous media watchdogs have been accusing the journalist Fareed Zakaria of serial plagiarism. Across multiple reports, the authors at Our Bad Media have cited at least three dozen instances in which the CNN host and Washington Post columnist appeared to have lifted passages from various publications and websites for unattributed reuse in his books and magazine articles and on his television program. Their most recent report, focusing on 24 instances of plagiarism on his CNN show, is the most damning to date.

This week, I conducted a review of the reports to determine whether the instances they cited truly qualified as plagiarism. I also asked two jourrnalism ethics experts " Robert Drechsel, the James E. Burgess chair and director of the Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Kelly McBride, the vice president for academic programs of The Poynter Institute " to review the reports. They came to the same conclusion I did: Fareed Zakaria plagiarized.

"Most of the examples provided and analyzed by the bloggers seem to fall into the realm of what is now being called 'patch writing' " using material generated by someone else, without attribution, but rewritten slightly so one cannot call it verbatim copying," Drechsel wrote in an email to POLITICO. "It falls within what I would consider plagiarism. Other examples cited by the bloggers do appear to be verbatim."

"It seems obvious that Fareed was overly reliant on his source material," McBride wrote. "It's plagiarism. Low-level. But plagiarism."
Posted by: badanov || 09/18/2014 00:00 || Comments || Link || [1 views] Top|| File under:

#1  It would be 'low level' plagiarism if he simply used someone else's words while talking live about something. We all get our information from somebody else; very few people are actual eyewitnesses to the events people talk about.
When you publish, in writing, somebody exact words and phrases, without even mentioning that it comes from 'whoever', it isn't low-level;
It's outright theft.
I predict nothing will come of this; he's a darling of the leftist media, and 'whoever' is simply guilty of stealing Zakaria's ideas before he had them.

Hirsi Ali speaks out at Yale against Muslim 'indoctrination'
[NHREGISTER] Ayaan Hirsi Ali, known worldwide for her crusade on behalf of women's rights in Moslem regions, brought her message to Yale University Monday night and received a standing ovation at the end of her talk.

Her warm reception came despite a protest in the days before her visit by Yale's Moslem Students Association. They criticized Yale's William F. Buckley Jr. Program for inviting her to campus, saying she lacks the "credentials" to speak authoritatively on Islam.

The students association called on the Buckley Program leaders to have another voice on stage to counter Hirsi Ali's views. The Buckley leaders declined to do this.
