CDC issues Ebola checklist: 'Now is the time to prepare'

#1  They should have issued this 3-4 months ago... but better late than after Ebola hits our country.

Hospitals and health workers should be aware of this and tests ready to be done at a moments notice. Good to be prepared for something this lethal.

Fourth Sierra Leonean doctor dies from Ebola
[ARABNEWS] A fourth Sierra Leonean doctor, a woman, died Sunday after contracting the dreaded Ebola virus, the country's chief medical officer said.

Doctor Olive Buck, who was in charge of Lumley Government Hospital in the capital's west end, tested positive for Ebola on Tuesday and was admitted to the Connaught Hospital in central Freetown.

"It's another sad loss for the profession," Sierra Leone's chief medical officer Brima Kargbo said by telephone. "The ministry of health is in deep grief to miss another devoted Ebola fighter." Medical sources said arrangements had been at an advanced stage to fly the ailing doctor, who was in her early sixties, out of the country for further treatment.

#1  President Barack Obama announced Sunday that he will be sending members of the U.S. military to West Africa to help in the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, which has claimed over 2,100 lives. Here.

This is a complete misuse/abuse of our military. All we need is an ebola epidemic rampaging through our military. Our military should be used for defense/war fighting and little else. The UN, WHO, CDC, Doctors Without Borders, etc. should be addressing this problem.

Court rejects appeal of Haia officials
[ARABNEWS] The Court of Grievances has rejected an appeal of four Haia members against their being barred from field work and assigned administrative tasks outside of Riyadh after attacking a British man and his Saudi wife outside a mall in Riyadh.

"The four were interrogated and convicted (by the Commission for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue) without representation," said Mohammad Al-Rouq, their lawyer.

One of the four members said he felt depressed by the decision.

Robber killed in shootout
[Dhaka Tribune] A local robber was to have killed reportedly in a shootout between police and his accomplices in Aminpur area of Manirampur upazila early yesterday.
Oh dear. Someone needs training in the RAB standard report.
In the incident, two police constables named Nazrul and Prabir were maimed as well.
Splinter for Nazrul, a badly stubbed toe for Prabir, poor man.
The shootout bumped off Osman Dofadar, 28, who was accused in seven cases filed for robbery.
Wanted on twelve planets, our two-namer miscreant somehow went down with a randomly fired shot precisely behind the right ear.
The shot AKA point blank range, the preferred range for police world wide.
Manirampur cop shoppe OC Mollah Khabir Ahmed said they tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
Osam from Fakirer Rastar moorh on Saturday noon and based on his information, a team of police conducted a raid on the house of one of his cohorts named Babu in the area around 3am
A traditional time for a raid...
and recovered one shutter gun, two rounds of bullet and one crude bomb.
Whew! At least they got the shutter gun and rounds of bullet right. The sergeant in charge of the evidence room will be so pleased.
It sez right there in the login sheet. Out at 0200 hrs one each gun, shudder; two each bullets, rounds of; one each bomb, crude, Acme brand.
At one stage, Osman's accomplices attacked the team with firing gun shots and hurling crude bombs while it was on the way of returning back the cop shoppe, triggering the fierce shootout that left him dead and the coppers injured. Osman, son of Azibor Darafdar, a resident of the area, has long been engaged in robbery in the district.
So, he was a "working man", then?
Then his shootout was long overdue. How he got there when he'd been safely locked up in the interrogation room is a bit of a puzzle, though.
The body was sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.
"He's dead, Jim."
"However do you do that, Doctor? And without even looking!"

Not that she was intimidated or her family threatened or anything.

At least 18 die as boat carrying wedding party sinks near Multan
[DAWN] Severe flooding sank a boat carrying a wedding party near Multan in Punjab province on Sunday, killing the bridegroom and 17 others, officials said.
"The party was just ruined!"
Senior police officer Mian Tanvir said the army-run boat carrying over 30 people capsized when it hit debris from a dyke that had been blown up earlier in the day to divert waters away from urban areas.

"Divers are searching for the remainders," he said, adding that 18 passengers had been rescued. The army later said in a statement that an officer had drowned while helping in rescue efforts. Local television channels showed footage of emergency workers and the wailing father of the bridegroom.

The bride was among the rescued. "We were many people in the boat and water started seeping in and eventually it overturned," she told a news hound from a local television channel, which did not give her name. "I don't know who survived and who we lost."

Nigeria church collapse kills 40 people, injures 124
That's a bad sign, right?
[Iran Press TV] At least 40 people have died in the Nigerian city of Lagos after a huge church building collapsed in the country's southwest, rescue authorities said.

"Now 40...[people are] dead," Ibrahim Farinloye, southwest coordinator of the country's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said on Sunday, adding that rescue operations continue on Sunday.

This is while nearly 124 people were pulled out from the rubble of the structure, the megachurch of one of Nigeria's well-known evangelical preachers.

The two-story building, located in the expansive compound of the enormous church complex, collapsed on Friday afternoon while undergoing construction work to add extra floors.

The building is believed to be a guesthouse for foreign followers of T. B. Joshua's The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), in the Ikotun area of Lagos.

Election Throws Sweden Into Turmoil as Nationalists Surge
They want their country back? What's wrong with those people!
[BLOOMBERG] Sweden's election threw the nation's political establishment into turmoil as backing for the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats more than doubled, leaving the largest Nordic economy facing a hung parliament.

The three-party Social Democratic opposition led byStefan Loefvenwon 43.6 percent, versus 39.5 percent for the four-party government of Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, according to a count of 97 percent of the vote. The Sweden Democrats garnered 13 percent to become the third largest party.

#1  The three-party Social Democratic opposition consists of "The Greens" and "The Reds", as well as the Feminist Party. Looks like the Swedes are going to flirt with socialism and extremes instead of keeping the conservatives, who have done an excellent job at running the country these past 8 years, as your article acknowledges.

Federal Appeals Court Orders Wisconsin's Voter ID Law To Be Reinstated
[Fox6Now] A federal appeals court has reinstated Wisconsin's voter photo identification law.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck the law down as unconstitutional in April, saying it unfairly burdens poor and minority voters who may lack such identification. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
to overturn that ruling.

The 7th Circuit issued a ruling late Friday afternoon lifting Aldeman's stay and allowing the law to go into effect before the November elections.

The judges will determine the merits of attorney general Van Hollen's appeal at a later date, but as of this afternoon Wisconsin voters will need to show a photo ID in order to cast their ballots.
No doubt eventually it will end up at the Supreme Court, as President Obama and the Democrat-controlled Senate have done their best to load up the appeals court layer with liberal judges.

#1  Make ID cards costless and do away with this siliness about poors voters.
Posted by: JFM || 09/15/2014 9:04 Comments || Top||

#2  In some places the IDs issued in lieu of drivers licenses are costless. And sometimes they'll even come to you to issue them. But people still complain they're racist.
Posted by: Glenmore || 09/15/2014 9:43 Comments || Top||

#3  We all have to show IDs in many situations other than voting. It is not a hardship. One can only assume that because there is so much pushback by the left against showing IDs at the voting booth, that they are OK with rigged elections.
Posted by: JohnQC || 09/15/2014 10:43 Comments || Top||

#4  The photo ID cards have been 'costless' for some time for documented low-income folks in Wisconsin. The argument was (and still is) that the 'voters' will have to go to the local Motor Vehicle Department in order to apply. Supposedly transportation to the DMV stations is hardship for some 'disadvantaged' folks.

Although these same folks will walk or take a bus all over town to use their EBT cards (requiring a photo ID) or pick up a couple quarts of Colt 45 (IDs required here, too).

Another complaint, because the DMV stations are open only during normal working hours during the week, not everyone can get there (supposedly). Solution implemented to keep the stations open later a couple days a week. Some folks will still b*tch.
Posted by: Mullah Richard || 09/15/2014 11:26 Comments || Top||

#5  It does not need to go to the Supreme Court. The Wisconsin voter I.D. law is materially the same as another States (I do not recall which state.) law which was upheld by the Supreme Court.

That law needs to be replicated in all 57 states.

#7  Sonny, of course it has to go back to the Supreme Court. And if they uphold it, Holder will keep going back to the Court until they get it RIGHT! /sarcasm

Ebola Toll Hits 2,400 as Cuba Pledges Medics
[AnNahar] The worst-ever Ebola outbreak has killed more than 2,400 people, the U.N. said Friday,
"At least as far as various governments are aware and have informed us," the UN spokesperson did not add. "Really, who knows what happens in the villages and the slums?"
as Cuba pledged the largest foreign medical team deployed so far in the west African health crisis.

World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan warned the spiraling epidemic of the murderous tropical virus demanded a stronger, faster response from the international community.

In the three hardest-hit countries, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, "the number is moving faster than the capacity to manage them," she told news hounds in Geneva.

As of Friday, 4,784 people had been infected with Ebola and more than 2,400 of them had died, Chan said.

She did not specify if the figures also included Nigeria, which has reported 21 cases, eight fatal, since the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record began in Guinea at the start of the year.

Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
has also seen one confirmed case of Ebola -- a Guinean student who has recovered.

While experimental treatments raise hope of eventually finding a cure, Chan stressed Friday that "the thing we need most of all is people" on the ground.

She welcomed a pledge from Cuba to send 62 doctors and 103 nurses to Sierra Leone, where more than 500 people have died.

The U.N.'s announcement came as health officials in Sweden said they were conducting tests on a patient with a possible case of the virus.

Results are expected Saturday from the unnamed patient who "comes from a country in west Africa" affected by Ebola, a front man told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The WHO estimates that another 500 foreign health professionals and around 1,000 local doctors and nurses are needed to stop its deadly surge through west Africa.

The Cuban health workers will remain in the region for six months, Cuban Health Minister Roberto Morales Ojeda told the Geneva news conference.

All have "previously participated in post-catastrophe situations," and all volunteered for the mission, he said.

Cuba, which has a long tradition of sending its world-renowned medics to help with situations around the globe, has pledged the biggest team to date to take part in the Ebola fight.

The United States has already sent some 100 medics, and the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
has pledged to send around 100 more, while a range of other countries have pitched in with smaller teams and other aid.

WHO and the Doctors Without Borders charity meanwhile each count around 200 international medical experts on the ground in the region, while WHO has 300 more on standby.

#4  Yep. The Hajj is in 3 weeks. IMO, the only horror would be the huge risk of hajis bringing it back to their permanent residences in Europe and North America.

#5  As I said earlier, the big question is, can this spread outside tropical Africa?

I don't know and I have a degree in genetics.
Posted by: phil_b || 09/15/2014 10:56 Comments || Top||

#6  Patrick Sawyer, a U.S. citizen, is the reason ebola is spreading in Nigeria. He had been in Liberia on business, then erupted with symptoms on the flight to Nigeria, en route to the U.S. He collapsed in the airport in Lagos and died short time later in the hospital. All subsequent ebola infections in Nigeria trace back to him, mostly medical staff who treated him, and their families.

If he'd left Liberia one day earlier, he would've made it to the U.S.

So it can spread anywhere humans can travel. Or ship it, in the form of infected bush meat, smuggled to the large West African community in New York, for example.
Posted by: RandomJD || 09/15/2014 12:21 Comments || Top||

#7  phil_b, you'll love this.

The concern is that the virus is getting so many chances to mutate, an airborne strain may emerge. That is, more airborne than it already is, through aerosols, which occur with every sneeze, cough, vomit. If ebola were ever to spread through air as readily as smallpox - which behaves like smoke - that would be pretty much game over.
Posted by: RandomJD || 09/15/2014 12:38 Comments || Top||

#8  "Why has the US sent over 100 doctors, but the African Union has only pledged to do so?" Because there's a hellacious shortage of doctors anywhere in Africa. And not all African doctors have decent training. Many schools in Africa are not equipped to teach basic science--the majority of schools aren't equipped to teach much of anything beyond elementary school.
Posted by: mom || 09/15/2014 13:02 Comments || Top||

#9  The $4.27 billion WHO is incapable of standardised regular updates of new infections. They stopped on August 20.

My projections from previous figures say that in the two weeks to end September there should be roughly 2025 new cases.

Next month we should have another couple of countries with first infections

#10  There will be no ebola at the Hajj as Saudi is way stricter than the US or Britain.

They will just deny visas. Plus Muslims are fastidiously clean. The women for one are wearing gloves and masks. Two most important things to prevent transmission from an infected surface.

Posted by: anon1 || 09/15/2014 13:42 Comments || Top||

#11  Plus Muslims are fastidiously clean.

For a certain value of clean, anon1. The pious wipe their bottoms only with the left hand, and eat only with the right. But I cannot imagine that cooking also is only done with the right hand...

By their own lights they are fastidious about cleanliness. But a closer examination suggests that the understanding of cleanliness in 8th century Arabia is not the same as that of the modern First World, with our soaps and private bathrooms and antibacterial hygiene.
Posted by: trailing wife || 09/15/2014 15:09 Comments || Top||

#12  Every single person at the Hajj could wear gloves and masks, and it wouldn't matter. Ebola can enter through the eyeballs and microscopic breaks in the skin.

Denying visas may or may not help, as it only takes one person to start a chain of transmission. It is also impossible to identify persons infected with ebola during the incubation period - a week or more - while they are asymptomatic. Even symptomatic cases are difficult to distinguish early on, as the initial symptoms resemble malaria and flu.
