Clash between Afghan Taliban fighters leaves nine dead
[AA.TR] Fighting between two groups of Taliban in northern Afghanistan on Sunday left at least nine dead in the first possible sign of division among the organization's rank-and-file following news of Mullah Muhammed Omar's death.

A group of ethnic Uzbek fighters
"Carpetbagging furriners!"
clashed with a Pashtun group
"Inbred locals! Your family tree is a barber pole!"
in Qaisar, Faryab province, when the Uzbek group refused to obey the orders of the Pashtun leader, a local official said.
"What could we do, Effendi? He had a hare lip and a club foot... and those were his best features!"
Mohammad Reza Rezaee, a provincial army front man, said at least nine snuffies were killed and 11 maimed.

"The fight, which broke out this morning, is still underway," he told Anadolu Agency. He said the two groups had been fighting side by side against the security forces just days earlier.

Thousands of local and foreign Taliban fighters recently took charge of more than 100 villages in the region but the security forces had since retaken some ground, Rezaee said.

"The fighters belonging to Mullah Hafiz, a Pashtun ethnic commander, and the Taliban's Uzbek ethnic deputy shadow governor Mullah Abdul Samad have clashed after the Uzbek fighters rejected Mullah Hafiz's orders," Rezaee said.

"We see these cracks among [them] as goodwill." He did not say how the army received the information.

The death of Omar, who led the Taliban from 1996, was announced on Wednesday. His successor, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, is said to be deeply opposed by some senior figures in the Taliban.

A number of prominent commanders snubbed the council meeting that saw him elected while others are said to have stormed out, including Omar's son and brother.

The clash between the Pashtun and Uzbek fighters could be the first sign of disunity on the frontline between ordinary Taliban fighters.

The group's front man, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied there was an internal dispute over the leadership.

"I spoke with our governor Qari Salahuddin hours ago," Mujahid told Anadolu Agency. "He ensured me about unity among fighters on the battle ground."

88 militants killed in Egypt's Sinai over 11 days: Army
[AA.TR] The Egyptian army has killed scores of Lions of Islam in the northern Sinai Peninsula within the past 11 days, a military front man asserted on Sunday.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Brigadier-General Mohammed Samir said the army had killed a total of 88 Lions of Islam in the volatile region between July 20 and July 31.

According to Samir, another 58 individuals suspected of engaging in bad boy activity -- two of whom, he said, had been "wanted" by the authorities -- were detained over the same period.

The army, added Samir, had also destroyed 39 vehicles and 36 cycle of violences used by Lions of Islam to carry out attacks on security personnel.

Anadolu Agency was unable to independently verify the front man's claims.
Al Ahram adds:
Army forces were also able to dismantle 47 bombs that were prepared to attack army personnel.

Previous army statements reveal that most assailants attacking police and army personnel use cars and cycle of violences without license plates. Samir said that 39 vehicles and 36 cycle of violences with no license plates were destroyed.

200 Brotherhood members rounded up in 1 week: Egypt govt
[AA.TR] Security forces have rounded up 19 members of the outlawed Moslem BrĂĽderbund in fresh security sweeps, bringing the total number of group members detained over the past week to 200, according to Egypt's Interior Ministry.

In a statement released Sunday, the ministry announced that 19 Brotherhood members were tossed into the calaboose within the past 24 hours alone for committing and inciting "acts of violence".

The latest rash of arrests brings to 200 the total number of group members detained within the past week on violence-related charges.

The Moslem BrĂĽderbund, the group from which ousted President Mohammed Morsi hails, was branded a "terrorist organization" by the Egyptian authorities in late 2013.

The Brotherhood, for its part, insists it is committed to purely peaceful modes of activism.
And so it is, until violence is called for. Then they do what they must, taking only that joy in the work that Allah allows. Because, as they will tell you, they are pious folk.

The NAF used Alpha Jets to run close air support for Nigerian ground troops defending the village of Bita, in Nigeria's volatile northeast.

"Consequently, a large number of the turbans were killed and several others injured," Air Commodore Dele Alonge, director of public relations and information for the NAF, said in a statement Sunday.

The incident comes after President Muhammadu Buhari replaced each of Nigeria's military chiefs last month.

Former Chief of Air Staff Adesola Amosu was among those sacked, with Air Vice Marshal Sadeeq Abubakar taking over his position and pledging an increase in air attacks against Boko Haram.

Al-Houthi said the "aggressor" sought to humiliate Yemenis and called exiled Hadi's legitimacy "meaningless."

Military officials close to the Houthis in the rebel-held capital Sanaa said the rebels are continuously sending military reinforcements south to Aden and Taiz, suggesting major losses.

They said the Houthis are determined to continue fighting in Aden and Taiz, and have demanded that allied tribes send fighters to the two fronts. The Houthis are also actively recruiting new fighters in mosques, the officials said.

Security officials and witnesses said Sunday that pro-government forces, reinforced with tanks and rockets, are waging a heated battle at the Houthi outpost of al-Khadra, north of Aden. The sound of festivities and shelling can be heard for miles around, they said. Residents in nearby Dar Saad said smoke and flames are rising from the battle area.

Military officials said their forces advanced under air cover after removing mines placed by the rebels.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.

Saudi Arabia said one of its citizens was killed Sunday when a house inside the kingdom was struck by fire from neighboring Yemen.

A civil defense front man, Ali bin Omair al-Shahrani, said in comments to the official Saudi Press Agency that the Saudi was killed in the border town of Najran.

Airstrikes demolish hospital turned ISIS base in Hawija
[Rudaw] Dozens of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
holy warriors were killed in Hawija--including a local leader--in overnight Arclight airstrikes on a hospital Iraqi security sources have said was used as an ISIS compound, according to an intelligence official in the Kirkuk governorate Sunday.

The source, who requested anonymity, said the hospital was evacuated last year when the holy warriors gained control of the city and used it as their base.

"According to our information, a local leader called Abu Hares Samarayi was also among the dead in last night's attack," the source said before adding he could not verify the exact number killed in the raid.

Sunday's Arclight airstrikes followed a series of earlier attacks by coalition aircraft targeting ISIS sites around Hawija, a Sunni stronghold in Kirkuk province.

With just over 400,000 inhabitants who are predominantly Sunni Arabs, Hawija has been at the center of Sunni insurgency since 2004. It is 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) southwest of Kirkuk.

The Iraqi government's crackdown on Sunni protesters in April 2013 notably intensified political divisions and sectarian polarization within the whole of the country.

Kurdish officials in Kirkuk say until early in the 1940s most residents in Hawija were Kurdish, but were pushed out of the area in the so called Arabization process that changed the population demographics in the province in favor of Arabs.

Earlier last month families of Peshmerga soldiers taken prisoner by local ISIS holy warriors in Hawija said they had reached an understanding with Sunni tribal leaders for a possible prisoner exchange between the Peshmerga ministry and the murderous Moslems.

When the Iraqi army withdrew from the area in June 2014, tribal fighters affiliated with ISIS seized the city.

Key militant gunned down in southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] A key suspect wanted on many warrants for violent attacks in southern Thailand was killed and a soldier injured in a clash early on Sunday in Narathiwat province.

Security forces laid siege to the house in Rueso district after learning that key militant leader Masukarueno Yakumo was holed up inside. The siege began not long after midnight.

Masukarirueno was wanted on at least nine warrants. One of the warrants was for his participation in a bomb attack that killed a former chief of Rueso police station, and three other officials in the district on March 15 this year.

The security force, with help from the village chief, and the religious leader asked the father-in-law and wife of Masukarueno to tell him to surrender. After more than three hours of tense negotiations, the two refused to cooperate.

At about 4:30 a.m., the security force tried to send an advance team into the house. Masukarueno opened fire and a half-hour long gun battle broke out. Masukarueno was killed in the clash. His body was found lying in front of a toilet.

A rebel alliance including al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate, al-Nusra

Front, launched an offensive late Monday against Sahl al-Ghab, in a push threatening a string of pro-regime Alawite villages.

The rebel alliance, Army of Conquest, seized more than a dozen strategic hilltops and other positions, including a power plant, before being pushed out by pro-government forces, said the Observatory.

"In the past three days, the army has been able to take back nearly 50 percent of the areas it had lost," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britannia-based monitor.

The 72 hours of festivities killed at least 73 rebels and 42 regime forces, including Hizbullah fighters and members of the National Defense Forces militia allied with the government, he told AFP.

On Sunday, regime aircraft conducted air raids on rebel positions while on the ground the two sides traded heavy rocker fire and mortar rounds, Abdel Rahman said.

Sahl al-Ghab also borders the province of Idlib to the northwest, a vast majority of which is under the control of the Army of Conquest.

The Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, is the faith to which Assad adheres.

Kurdish forces in Syria say Hasaka city is liberated
[Rudaw] Kurdish forces in Syria said Sunday they have complete control of the city of Hasaka in the northeast of the country following an offensive against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) group that lasted more than a month.

The Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) said its forces, plus the group's YPJ women's wing, had killed 386 ISIS holy warriors during the offensives.

"During the operation 386 ISIS holy warriors were killed and the bodies of 117 were seized by YPG fighters. A number of ISIS leaders were also killed in the fight," said Azima Deniz, a commander of the YPJ.

Hasaka's ISIS ruler, his assistant and the mayor of Dair al-Zur were also killed during the military operations.

The Kurdish fighters seized large quantities of weapons and ammunitions from the radical group.

ISIS attacked Hasaka on June 24 and occupied several neighborhoods within two days.

The fight for Hasaka was backed by coalition Arclight airstrikes, and 21 YPG fighters had bit the dust in the battles, according to the Kurdish force.
