[Iran Press TV] US Judge Alex Kozinski has called for firing squad as the primary method of executing death row inmates instead of lethal injection.
The chief judge of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals urged states to abandon the injection following a recent string of botched lethal injections.
In an opinion, he labeled the lethal injection method as a dishonest attempt to disguise the brutal nature of capital punishment.
The opinion came after the botched lethal injection of Arizona death row inmate Joseph Wood took almost two hours on Wednesday. Wood was set to die July 23 for the 1989 murders of his estranged girlfriend and her father.
"Whatever happens to Wood, the attacks will not stop and for a simple reason: The enterprise is flawed. Using drugs meant for individuals with medical needs to carry out executions is a misguided effort to mask the brutality of executions by making them look serene and peaceful—like something any one of us might experience in our final moments. But executions are, in fact, nothing like that. They are brutal, savage events, and nothing the state tries to do can mask that reality. Nor should it," he wrote.
The judge insists that firing squads would never be troubled by a lack of guns or ammunition, adding that the guillotine is probably the best method, but seems inconsistent with national ethos.
"The firing squad strikes me as the most promising. Eight or ten large-caliber rifle bullets fired at close range can inflict massive damage, causing instant death every time. There are plenty of people employed by the state who can pull the trigger and have the training to aim true," Kozinski said.
"Sure, firing squads can be messy, but if we are willing to carry out executions, we should not shield ourselves from the reality that we are shedding human blood."

Ever notice the warnings plastered over plastic bags to keep them out of the hands of children. That's because when they put their heads in them and fresh air is not coming in, they slowly fall asleep from the ever increasing inhalation of their own exhaled CO2. There is no natural panic or alarm. They just shuffle off and die. Tragic, but as a means of execution, relatively humane, simple (no FDA requirements), and cheap.

Need not even be a firing squad. Hook up a GAU8, bore sight it. Fill the prisoner with sedatives to the point of unconsciousness, strap them to a board, prop them up where the gun is zeroed.
Have a computer fire off the relay based on a pressure plate and a timer. Run for 2 second burst.
Guaranteed no human hand directly kills the inmate, and guaranteed dead as a doornail.

I'm not concerned whether execution is slow or fast or painful or painless. And I agree that lethal injection is an attempt to make the process seem 'cleaner.' But really, why such a big deal about what drugs to inject? There's a lot of heroin confiscated, and a lot more available cheap, direct from the growers, and a lot of people OD on the stuff by accident, even with known risks, so it must have some desirable characteristics. So, just pop these guys with a serious megadose of heroin and let them go out high and happy, and cheaply.

Last time I stuck my head in the Corner over at National Review, either a plurality or possibly a bare majority of the writers over there were opposed to the death penalty on ideological grounds.

I am Catholic. I vehemently oppose abortion. On the other hand, I respectfully disagree with my bishops on the issue of the death penalty. They're against it, I favor it in some cases.

I'm catholic. Strongly pro life. Opposed to the death penalty, except in very specific circumstances, and with very high standard of proof. Higher than proof needed for conviction. For Capitol crimes, perhaps there should be a completely different trial after the conviction, just for sentencing: life with possibility of parole after a statutory minimum of say 25 years, life no parole, and execution.
And I was only half joking with my execution method. Execution should be quick, effective beyond the shadow of a doubt, relatively painless, and terrible to behold, to act as a deterrent as well as a just punishment. Let's be very clear what we are doing as a society. I am loathe to praise the soviets but the pistol shot to the back of the head was effective and quick - and could likely be automated to where no human hand is directly involved.
One for the punishment of which death is inflicted, which punishment is called capital punishment.
Capitol Crimes:
Crimes and malfeasance down to or toward the public by the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government. These crimes are very difficult to convict as the problem is so far up the organizational chart that the ones committing these crimes are the ones investigating them.

I used to be anti-death penalty. Then I heard opn serial killers being released and killing again. Neing released becasue "otherwise with nothing to lose they would be very dangerous for the guards"

For those unalterably opposed to the death penalty, I offer two words: Lemuel Smith. Look him up in Wikipedia. He was serving a life sentence when he killed a female prison guard. He was sentenced to death, but his lawyers got the law declared unconstitutional. Instead, he was sentenced to life without parole.

Mr.Smith has more power than the state.
Read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It's the constant killing, vendetta, between the two families that was normal in his time. It took the state hundreds of years to establish the monopoly on death promising it would deliver justice. Now the ruling caste can't bring itself to fulfill its part of that bargain. The power will revert back to the people and already has in places like Chicago.
There is no perfect. However, the number of people that have been sitting on death row for decades is significantly smaller than the murders, that is properly, executions that occur annually in our neighborhoods, streets, business, streets, homes and schools. Who wields the real power?

When she spotted the "Hockeyroos" after their win at Glasgow Hockey Stadium, the 88-year-old monarch made her way over to the girls and struck up conversations with several of them.
"We were warming down on the second pitch after our game and the queen came out to meet Donny (team captain Madonna Blyth)," Taylor said after the surprise encounter.
"She asked us a bit about the pitch, how we were going and told us to enjoy our time here. She was lovely, really, really lovely."
To be fair, the 29-year-old Aussie from Perth admitted that the royal selfie photobomb took some careful planning.
"Brooke [Peris] and I planned it so that when she came out the door she would be behind us," Taylor said.
"And then she came out and smiled at the camera. We were in the right spot at the right time."
Their strategic photo skills resulted in one of the most entertaining pictures of Queen Elizabeth in the history of the games.

We met an elderly British lady some years back who was a 'lorry' driver, along with the future queen, during WWII. She said that the princess was a 'lovely' person who did her job very well.
Elizabeth also wanted to be a vehicle mechanic, but apparently that was considered too dangerous for a 'Royal' at the time and her father discouraged her from doing so. She obeyed his request.

There was a terrible fire in a stable that housed some of the Queen's horses, as well as those of a number of just ordinary folk. She got out of bed at one o'clock in the morning and went to the scene to comfort people who lost animals (hers were in a different building, and survived). She is one great woman, and she's been a tremendous asset for Britain. Charles should never be allowed within a thousand miles of the title "King". He's arrogant, ignorant, and not terribly bright. Both Andrew and Edward are much more intelligent, as are both of Charles' sons. I hope the Queen recommends that Charles be skipped, and the crown go to William or Harry.

It may be even more than hospital policy - that policy may be required by law, as the hospital may be defined as a 'prison' or 'mental health confinement facility' under certain conditions, with whatever gun rules apply to those.

A few year ago (2010) a guy from Yemen or the Sudan showed up at a local hospital in a taxi. He had a .357 magnum with him. He was looking for a doctor but the doctor was not there. He ended up shooting and killing a friend of ours in the parking lot. He then shot himself. From the article:
"Investigators searching suspected shooter Abdo Ibssa's home found medicine for psychotic problems and a note indicating that Ibssa believed a doctor at the hospital had placed an electronic chip inside him during a 2001." Had he found the doctor he would have killed him. The hospital had armed security. Sometimes you just have make sure the gun is at the point of immediate need.

I once talked to a guy who believed someone had implanted a chip in his brain that was monitoring his thoughts. He really wanted to get a CT scan of his head to prove himself right (this was before MRI's). I told him the chip had to be bigger than 1 cm and made out of the right kind of material to even show up on a CT scan. And he looked at me like I was crazy.

All the medical facilities I've worked at have had that policy. The only exception I've seen is law enforcement in the performance of their duties while at the ER or responding to a combative-patient alert. Even then, I've had hospital officials demand that the officers leave their weapon in their vehicle.

The Champ is most comfortable with feckless, cheering, youth audiences in safe, controlled, liberal academic environments. Like him, most [students] have yet to hold a job or pay their own way. Their concept of the future goes little beyond Thursday's midterm, or Saturday's keg party. No shame to be had, we were all like them once, and we might all of taken the candy and admired the righteous rhetoric of a popular clownish leader. Thankfully however, we survived our youth and are now adults, and able to sort his rubbish out for what it is.
I just hope few will take the candy, leave the swings, and jump into his clown car.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the SSP of Shaheed Benazirabad, retired Captain Pervez Ahmed Chandio, said that the cop shoppe would deal with cases related to women and kiddies.

[DAWN] Police claimed to have nabbed Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! on Thursday a landlord's son who allegedly chopped off both arms of a young boy by pushing him on to a running water pumping machine in Chak Bhula village.
According to police, the accused has confessed that he had thrown the boy on to the water pump after tying his hands.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab... took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Gujrat police and the district administration.
According to sources, landlord Ghulam Ghous and Nasir Iqbal, the boy's father, had a dispute over getting an electricity transformer repaired as farmlands and outhouses of their families were in the same neighbourhood.
On July 21, the landlord's son Ghulam Mustafa, 24, allegedly pushed 10-year-old Tabassum Shahzad on a water pumping machine. The boy's arms were severed by its petter engine.
Shahzad was taken to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital, where he was given treatment and later sent home.
The family of the boy reported the matter to police on July 22. Police asked them to first produce a medico-legal report.
Police started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Ghulam Mustafa under sections 324 and 334 of the Pakistain Penal Code on the basis of the medico-legal report.
Nasir Iqbal told police that his son was punished by the landlord's son because of his dispute with his father.
District Police Officer Rai Ijaz Ahmad and SP Riaz Ahmad visited the scene of the crime to investigate the case.
The boy has been readmitted to the hospital and is now under treatment there.

When I first saw this headline on the front page I knew it had to be a Dawn article.
[DAWN] DERA MURAD JAMALI: A girl was rubbed out allegedly by her father in the name of 'honour' in Akhundani village in Jhal Magsi district on Thursday.
According to Levies sources, Mohammad Omar shot up his daughter and fled. The girl suffered serious bullet wounds and died.
No details were immediately available about the matter that led to the girl's death. The Levies Force have started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Mohammad Omar.

Missile manufacturers are notoriously coy when it comes to releasing details of the their products performance. What little MBDA has said regarding Meteor indicates a range significantly greater than 62 miles and sustained speeds of at least Mach 4.
By contrast, in its official fact sheet the U.S. Air Force attributes the early-model AIM-120 with a range of 20-plus miles and supersonic speed. The AIM-120D version should extend the baseline range by around 50 percent. The actual effective ranges of both the Meteor and the AMRAAM are very likely to be well in excess of published figures.
