Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Poll: Support for third intifada waning among Palestinians
[IsraelTimes] Survey shows 42% back armed uprising, down from over 60% in December; majority would support Abbas over Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, candidate

A new poll of Paleostinians in the West Bank and Gazoo Strip has found that less than half support a third intifada, or armed uprising, down from almost two-thirds who supported such a development last December.

According to the Awrad research institute, the survey of 1,200 Paleostinians shows that just 42 percent are in favor of a new uprising. In the West Bank, 57% are opposed, and in Gazoo, 48% are against it.

Moreover, half believe that an uprising would impede Paleostinian statehood (50% overall: 51% in the West Bank, and 49% in the Gazoo Strip), and a majority (64%) believe the situation overall is "headed in the wrong direction" (79% in Gazoo, 55% in the West Bank).

By contrast, a Paleostinian poll released in mid-December showed that two-thirds of Paleostinians supported the wave of stabbings against Israelis, with the same percentage backing a larger armed uprising.

Some 30 people have been killed in a wave of near-daily stabbing, shooting, and car-ramming attacks by Paleostinians since October. More than 160 Paleostinians have also been killed, most of them in the act of attacking Israelis and others in festivities and demonstrations.

The poll respondents also overwhelmingly opposed the dissolution of the Paleostinian Authority and the return of control over the West Bank to Israel (78%).

A majority were in favor of immediate Paleostinian elections (79%), which have not been held for over 10 years. If PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
was pitted against Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
, the former would win with some 36% of the vote, while Haniyeh would snag 22%. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
if tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti were to run in lieu of Abbas, he would garner some 52% of the vote, while Haniyeh would get 18%, the poll indicated.

#1  Marwan Barghouti is currently in prison in Israel but I suppose that wouldn't keep him from running if there were really an election.

He could address people via skype.

He could blog speeches.

and, the best part is that Israel protects him from assassination by Hamas or ISIS by keeping him safe in prison.

Afghanistan
U.S. to deploy 100s of additional troops to Helmand
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] As the battle between Afghan forces and Taliban toughens and reports suggest that some areas are on the verge of collapse, the United States has decided sending hundreds of additional troops to southern Afghanistan's Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province.

By month's end, a force described as battalion-strength, consisting of mostly army soldiers, will arrive in Helmand province where US and UK forces have struggled in battles for over a decade to drive out the Taliban, the Guardian reports.

In keeping with Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
's formal declaration that the US is not engaged in combat, despite elite forces recently participating in an hours-long battle in Helmand, defense officials said the additional troops would not take part in combat. But they will help the existing Helmand force defend itself against Taliban attacks, officials said.

US military officials declined to offer many specifics about an upcoming reinforcement, but they described the mission as primarily aimed at bolstering the performance of the embattled 215th Corps of the Afghan military, through training.

The 215th Corps has recently had its commander replaced amid performance and corruption concerns, and has endured "unusually high operating tempo for long periods of time", outgoing US commander General John Campbell testified to Congress last week. It is among four Afghan corps that still have US military advisers embedded within it, despite a recent pullback to advise at higher levels.

"Our mission remains the same," said Colonel Michael Lawhorn, a front man for the US command in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
, "to train, advise, and assist our Afghan counterparts, and not to participate in combat operations."

The Guardian understands the additional forces in Helmand will not increase the current total troop numbers in Afghanistan, which currently stand at 9,800, but will instead be deployed from troops already in the country. Batallion strengths vary, but can constitute a force of up to 800 troops.

While new advisers make up a significant component of the additional forces, Lawhorn said that another mission of the reinforcement will be to "bolster force protection for the current staff of advisers", suggesting a concern for the safety of the existing Helmand force amid major recent Taliban gains.

The US military has sounded warnings of a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, in Helmand and beyond, that have prompted significant revisions in Obama's war plans.

Already Obama has agreed to leave 5,500 troops in Afghanistan past the end of his presidency, but his newly confirmed commander, General John "Mick" Nicholson, told a Senate panel recently that increased bully boy violence will prompt him to re-evaluate troop requests, and left the door open to bolstering a force Obama has sought to draw down.

Opium-rich Helmand has emerged as a Taliban priority, as most of its 2015 attacks focused on the province. Unlike earlier eras of the war, the Taliban have declined to take a winter break and have fought in the province all year.

The Taliban have come close to overrunning a district center in Helmand, Sangin, where more than 100 UK troops died during a war that has entered its 15th year, despite US Arclight airstrikes in late December. Kabul is said to control only three of Helmand's 14 districts, including the quiet provincial capital of Lashkar Gah.

Outgoing commander Campbell, testifying to Congress last week, said that while current rules of engagement prevented US troops who are not engaged in counter-terrorism raids from initiating fights with the Taliban, "I have no restrictions on providing force protection" for troops that train Afghans.

Lawhorn described the reinforcement as a "planned deployment of additional personnel", but at least one congressional official contacted by the Guardian was unaware of the plan.

I favor pulling everything out of Afghanistan - including electric power plants and water works - and leaving the place to the primitive hominids that populate that wasteland.

So - I actually supported the original withdrawal. But - whatever we do, don't go back in.

Daesh smuggles Afghanistan's timber to Pakistan, report
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A report published by the Voice of America (VOA) reveals that the loyalists of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) who have named Afghanistan and Pakistain region as the province of Khorasan are involved in timber smuggling.

Local officials and tribal elders in the eastern region of the country have told VOA that the terrorist group has imported tree-cutting machines to their areas.

Armed men associating themselves with IS-Khorasan or Daesh [Islamic State] have been seen in Achin, Naziyan and Dehbala districts of eastern Nangarhar

province cutting trees with the imported machines for smuggling to Pakistain.

Local residents have been cited by VOA as saying that timber-loaded trucks are sent to Pakistain daily. Some of the timber is sold in local markets in Afghanistan.

"Smuggling takes place ... in areas alongside the Durand Line," Malak Hashem, a tribal elder in Naziyan, told VOA, referring to the Afghan-Pakistain border.

Tribal leaders say the Afghan government is turning a blind eye to the smuggling.

"The government has done nothing in this regard," Malak Afsar, a tribal elder in Achin, told VOA. He added that timber is transported to market by locals who work as middlemen for IS.

A front man for the provincial government said the cutting of trees has not been raised with local government.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the acting director of Nangarhar's agriculture directorate said he has heard the reports, but says the tree cutting continues only in one district.

"Dehbala is the only district where the tree cutting is still going on, and we are communicating with local elders in the district to stop it," said the director, who goes by the name Engineer Shakir.

Kundoz gets new governor after five months
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] After the fall of Kundoz city to Talibs last year, some high-ranking government officials including Governor Mohammad Omar Safi were sacked for negligence in their duties.

Since then, Kundoz was administered by acting-governor. But finally, the province got a new governor.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has appointed Asadullah Omarkhil as the new governor for Kundoz.

"Appointed Mr. Omarkhiel as the governor of Kunduz with my clear instructions/support to bolster the security there," states a post on the official twitter account of the President.

Sayed Zafar Hashemi, a spokesperson for the Presidential Palace 'ARG' said that delay in the appointment of governors is because of the assessment of the ability of the candidates.

According to Hashemi, President Ghani had interviewed six individuals to fill in the post of governor for Kundoz province.

India-Pakistan
Maulana Aziz's 'pardon' to Musharraf termed against Sharia
[DAWN] Lal Masjid
...literally the Red Mosque, located in Islamabad and frequented by all sorts of high govt officials. The proprietors, Ghazi Abdul Rasheed and Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi, unleashed their Islamic storm troopers on the city, shutting down whorehouses and beating people up who weren't devout enough. The Musharraf govt put an end to the nonsense by besieging the place. Abdul Aziz Ghazi was nabbed while he was trying to escape dressed up like a girl. BBC reported that the corpse count at 173, but other claims, usually hysterical, say there were up to 1000 titzup. Among their number was Abdul Rashid Ghazi. Everyone then said tut-tut and what a nice guy he had been...
Shuhada Foundation has termed Maulana Abdul Aziz
...nutball holy man who runs the Lal Masjid in the heart of Pakistain's capital. After instigating a rebellion against the state in 2007, he was caught trying to sneak away dressed in a burka. He rejects democracy as un-Islamic, which it probably is...
's decision to withdraw the murder case against former president Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
against the spirit of Sharia.

The foundation held a meeting in Lal Masjid on Monday and declared that Maulana Aziz had imposed a 'clergy dictatorship' on his family to hide the tyranny of a military dictator.

The meeting was followed by a presser at the same place where a day earlier Maulana Aziz had addressed mediapersons and pardoned everybody responsible for the 2007 military operation on the mosque and the attached seminary, Jamia Hafsa
... the Islamic nunnery maintained by Lal Masjid....
.

Though the chairperson of Shuhada Foundation is Ume Hasaan, the wife of Maulana Aziz who was sitting beside her husband at the time of his media talk, the other office-bearers of the foundation, including its president Tariq Asad advocate, are opposing the decision.

"This decision is against Sharia and we would like Maulana Abdul Aziz to take it back," Mr Asad said, adding: "Maulana Aziz is talking about the implementation of Sharia in the country but his own acts are contrary to the principles of Sharia."

He said he and Shuhada Foundation never bowed to any pressure or offer by anybody, including the former military dictator.

Mr Asad said the former general himself had wanted the Shuhada Foundation to take back the murder case of Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi but we declined to accept his demand.

"The dictator was even ready to submit a public apology and made four other offers but we rejected them," he claimed.

The other three offers as stated by Mr Asad were: payment of blood money to the heirs of those killed in the military operation, rebuilding of Jamia Hafsa from his own pocket at its old place - the children library - and to be witness against those who were responsible for the military operation.

"We rejected it and we announce to continue the legal and constitutional struggle against all those responsible for the military operation on Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa in 2007," Mr Asad said.

The Shuhada Foundation also announced to lodge a fresh FIR against Gen Musharraf and other military officers of that time, the then prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, and other cabinet members for the 2007 military operation.

Indian diplomat may get 14 year term over 'spying for Pakistan'
[DAWN] Former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Madhuri Gupta, facing legal action over allegedly spying for Pakistain, will be charged under India's Official Secrets Act and can face imprisonment up to 14 years, the Delhi High Court ordered on Tuesday.

According to Indian News Agency IANS, the Delhi High Court Judge Pratibha Rani maintained that evidence placed by the police against Gupta was "prima facie sufficient" to frame a charge against her under a more stringent section of India's Official Secrets Act, which attracts maximum punishment of 14 years.

Gupta, 56, worked in the Indian embassy's information service. She was called back to New Delhi in April 2010 on the pretext of consultations before police swooped on her at home.

for providing sensitive information to Pakistain's top intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Soon after the arrest, Gupta's lawyer had insisted that her client was being framed and said police had failed to provide any evidence against her.

Supreme Court stays execution of three APS attack facilitators
[DAWN] The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the execution of three men convicted by military courts for their involvement in the Army Public School attack.

The three men -- Mohammad Zubair, Ali Rehman and Taj Mohammad -- were convicted of facilitating and abetting the deadly attack in Dec 2014 that killed over 140, mostly children.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Dost Muhammad and Justice Qazi Faez Isa ordered a stay on the implementation of the military court decision.

The families of the convicts had challenged the military court verdict through petitions filed in the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court (PHC), however, after PHC dismissed the appeals, they moved the Supreme Court through Advocate Latif Afridi.

During the hearing, Afridi claimed that the high court did not even open the record and dismissed the appeals without hearing them.

The court issued notices to the attorney general and jail branch, and directed the former to explain the dismissal of the appeals.

The hearing was subsequently adjourned to Feb 16.

On Dec 2 last year, four Lions of Islam involved in the APS massacre were hanged at a civil jail in Kohat. The hangings were the first executions of civilians convicted by Pakistain's military courts.

Arabia
Saudi currency devaluation would carry major political risk
[Dhaka Tribune] A devaluation of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's currency could cause such political instability that Riyadh has little choice but to stick to its promise to use vast foreign exchange reserves to defend the riyal's 30-year-old peg to the US dollar.

Currency traders have been betting against the Saudi peg, and those of other regional oil producers, in the wake of oil's price collapse. Societe Generale last week said it saw at least a 25% chance of a near-term devaluation or 40% if oil prices stay at current levels throughout 2016.

But in Saudi Arabia's largely dollar-denominated economy breaking the peg would immediately raise the price of goods, hitting living standards.

Combined with other pending painful economic reforms, this could lead to unrest in a country where the unwritten social contract swaps citizens' obedience and allegiance to the king for good government services and a share in oil wealth.

Some diplomats living in Saudi Arabia say privately that a break in the peg is the single biggest political risk facing a country already embroiled in a war in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and suffering periodic deadly attacks by myrmidons.

The biggest Arab economy has only a small manufacturing base and almost all goods come as dollar-priced imports, so a cheaper riyal would instantly make normal Saudis feel poorer without providing any benefit to the wide economy via cheaper exports.

Erdogan threatened to 'open doors to Greece and Bulgaria' and flood EU with migrants -- report
[RT] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
threatened to "put refugees on buses" and flood Europe with migrants if EU leaders did not offer him enough cash to help curb the influx of asylum seekers, a leaked record of a high-level meeting claims.

"We can open the doors to Greece and Bulgaria anytime and we can put the refugees on buses," Erdogan was quoted as telling European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk after being told that the EU was offering The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
€3 billion over two years.

The minutes of the meeting that apparently took place in November in Antalya have been published by the Greek financial news website euro2day.gr

After Tusk mentioned the difficult situation in the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, Erdogan, who reportedly demanded €6 billion over two years, said: "So how will you deal with refugees if you don't get a deal? Kill the refugees?"

Because infidels are enemies, unless you have a stiffy.
Silly Fred -- stiffies are yet another weapon for conquering infidels. Recall those poor girls in England, and the families who could do nothing about it.
The criminal complaint, filed in federal court in Virginia, charges Umm Sayyaf with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terror organization, resulting in death.

The case comes one year after Mueller was confirmed dead by her family and the B.O. regime, though it's not clear when or if Umm Sayyaf will be brought to the U.S. to stand trial. The 25-year-old Iraqi woman, who was captured last year, is currently in Iraqi custody and facing prosecution there. Her husband, Abu Sayyaf, a former Islamic State minister for oil and gas, was killed last May in a Delta Force raid of his compound.

Somalia invites moderate Islamists to ‘negotiating table
MOGADISHU, Somalia -- Somali Federal government has urged paramilitary group of AhluSunna Wal Jamea to embrace peaceful resolutions to disputes with Adado administration, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking in Mudug regional district of Hobyo, Interior Minister Abdirahman Mohamed Hussein (Odawa) said, he wants that Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamea be united with Interim Galmudug Administration headquartered in central Somalia town of Adado. He has pressured Galmudug leader Abdikarin Hussein Guled into fresh endeavors aiming at end to the standing differences between both sides.

“Mr. President, we encourage you to give attention to Dhusamareb issue, especially Ahlu SunnaWal Jamea with which we held talks during the formation of [IGA).

We firmly believe that those in Dhusamareb are part of Galmudug people, and they should come to the negotiating table,” said Odawa.

In a jibe at gun-muscle, he asked Ahlu Sunna to resolve every grudge through peaceful means.

Remarks have come after months-long standoff over an inclusive administration in central Somalia. The paramilitary group refused to join state-formation convention in Adado in mid-2015, and in subsequent opposition, clashed with Galmudug troops in Guri’el.

Ahlu Sunna, moderates linked to Sufi tradition fought in many battles against Al Shabaab militants in central Somalia.

North Korea restarts plutonium reactor
North Korea has expanded a uranium enrichment facility and restarted a plutonium reactor that could start recovering spent fuel in weeks or months, the U.S. intelligence chief said Tuesday in delivering the annual assessment by intelligence agencies of the top dangers facing the country.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that Pyongyang announced in 2013 its intention to refurbish and restart nuclear facilities, to include the uranium enrichment facility at Yongbyon and its graphite-moderated plutonium production reactor, which was shut down in 2007.

"We assess that North Korea has followed through on its announcement by expanding its Yongbyon enrichment facility and restarting the plutonium production reactor," Clapper said in an opening statement to the Senate Armed Services Committee. "We further assess that North Korea has been operating the reactor long enough so that it could begin to recover plutonium from the reactor's spent fuel within a matter of weeks to months."
And remember, China is wringing its hands and saying that it can't do anything to stop its client-state...

#1  Lest we fergit, CHINA = has scores of tens of 000's of security forces in NOKOR whose main mission is to protect the Kim regime from North Koreans.

* YOMIURI SHIMBUN > SEOUL: [NOKOR] ROCKET MORE POWERFUL, i.e. longer-ranged than the 10,000-km one launched back in 2012.

The new one is 12,000-km ranged, + can reach MOST OF CONUS.

FYI other MSM-Net Artics claim 13,000-km range.

* TOPIX > US RESPONSES TO NORTH KOREA NUKE, ROCKET LAUNCH WILL UPSET CHINA.

More than China already is vee the so-called US "Return to Asia" + the USDOD returning to former Cold War or post-USSR, 9-11 Milbases - CHINA FEELING THE CONTAINMENT???

* SAME > [Washington Times] MR. OBAMA'S
"STRATEGIC PATIENCE" ON NORTH KOREA HAS FAILED.

Ditto IRAN???

Debris of Nork booster rocket pulled from ocean
South Korea has released the first images of debris believed to be from a long-range rocket fired by North Korea on Sunday. The pieces were pulled from the sea southwest of Jeju Island shortly after Pyongyang announced it had successfully launched the earth observation satellite Kwangmyongsong-4 into orbit. Recovered debris pieces were being analyzed, South Korea said.

Officials say the number of pieces indicate that the rocket's first-stage booster was fitted with a self-destruct device. An official with South Korea's Defense Ministry said that the booster "separated from [the rocket's] main body and exploded into about 270 pieces." There was no indication that any of the pieces came from the satellite.

Unlike the previous launch in December 2012, few large pieces were recovered.

On Monday, a senior U.S. defense official told CNN the satellite was "tumbling in orbit" and incapable of functioning in any useful way. South Korea also said the object appeared to be in orbit and that no signal had been received.

North Koreans celebrated the country's launch of a satellite into orbit with an official fireworks display Monday night in Pyongyang, state broadcaster KCTV reported.

"We hope that the future of our space technology keeps growing and shines like these fireworks in the sky," an announcer on the North Korean broadcaster said during coverage of the celebrations in the capital.

Yoon Dong Hyun, vice director of the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces, struck a defiant note in a speech at the celebrations, vowing the country would continue developing its aerospace technology in the face of international sanctions. Efforts by other countries to block such an advance were "nothing more than a puppy barking towards the moon," he said.

A state TV newsreader said the operation had been personally ordered and directed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"The date of the launch appears to be in consideration of the weather condition and ahead of the Lunar New Year and the U.S. Super Bowl," said Jo Ho-young, chairman of the South Korean National Assembly Intelligence Committee.

Alison Evans, senior analyst for Asia-Pacific at IHS Country Risk, said that Pyongyang had likely calculated that by carrying out the rocket launch so soon after the January 6 nuclear test -- before the international community had responded to the latter with new sanctions -- it might face less severe repercussions than if the launch and test were responded to individually.

However, she said, there's not a lot more the international community can do to sanction Pyongyang.
I can think of a few things...
"There are some things that haven't yet been touched upon, like North Korean labor exported abroad, which brings in a lot of foreign currency for the North Korean government," she said. "But if anything, it would be China's implementation of existing sanctions that would tighten the screws on North Korea."

#1  Again, NOKOR's Rocket + Debris paths are all over or in areas where China wants to take over for its sphere of influence once it gets the US to pullout from East Asia + 1/2 of the Pacific [WestPac].

#2  http://spacenews.com/north-korean-satellite-said-to-be-tumbling-in-orbit/

A North Korean satellite launched Saturday may be tumbling in orbit and inoperable.

While the U.S. Defense Department has made no public comment on the status of the Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite launched by North Korea, a senior defense official said it appeared that the satellite was tumbling in orbit, and thus not able to carry out its Earth observation mission.

The official didn’t provide any additional details on the satellite’s condition, and North Korean officials continue to declare the launch a success

Tumbling stopped (they regained control) but no telemetry. Hard to see how ground controllers could have regained control without telemetry. Hmmm.
