Syrian rebel leader dies in Daraa
2016-09-29
[ARA News] DARAA – A prominent anti-Assad rebel leader was killed in an attack by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria’s southern Daraa Governorate on Wednesday.

Hassan Abazid, leader of the Jund al-Farouq rebel group, was killed along with three of his escorts in a car bomb attack by ISIS militants in the Gharz town in Daraa countryside.

Jund al-Farouq is a main faction of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in southern Syria. Hassan had led several military operations against Syrian regime forces and ISIS-afifliated groups in Daraa.

“ISIS has earlier vowed to target all rebel leaders who refused to pledge allegiance to their Caliphate,” media activist Muhammad Obaida told ARA News in Daraa.

“An ISIS jihadi has infiltrated into the rebel-held town of Gharz and carried out a car bomb attack near a rebel convoy. Hassan and three other rebels were killed, and at least two more were injured in the attack,” the local source reported.

In July, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the assassination of another prominent Syrian rebel leader in Daraa Governorate. Shakir Nabbut al-Rashwani, commander of the Homs al-Waleed rebel group, was reported dead when militants bombed his car in the al-Balad District. “Al-Rashwani was a main enemy for ISIS in southern Syria. He led rebel operations against this barbaric group in Daraa and killed many of them. His death came as a shock to all rebel factions in Syria,” spokesman of the Shamiya Front Saleh al-Zein told ARA News at the time.
