Video: Assault on Egyptian waiter sparks outrage in Jordan
2015-10-06
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A video of men said to be brothers of a politician assaulting an Egyptian waiter in a restaurant in Jordan's southern port city of Aqaba has sparked outrage.

Security camera footage, widely shared on social media, appears to show MP Zeid al-Shawabka speaking to the waiter on Friday, before three other men throw punches at his head and chase him out of frame.

Some web users have demanded that Shawabka be stripped of his immunity, despite the video not showing him directly taking part in the attack.

News agency Petra quoted police as saying on Monday they had detained "all those who attacked the Egyptian".

Al-Ghad newspaper reported waiter Khaled Othman as saying he thought that the men had hit him because their meal a day earlier had arrived late.

Information Minister Mohammed Momani responded to the uproar on Sunday by saying that Jordan "respects Arab guests on its soil" and that "there are guarantees to allow everyone recourse to justice".

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians work in Jordan, mostly in construction and agriculture.
