Were Chechen security personnel behind Nemtsov's death?

We'll likely never know. No one appears to be watching the bastids very closely.
The possibility of a Chechen connection should not be dismissed, given Nemtsov's repeated criticism of Chechen chief Ramzan Kadyrov, and the fact that since 2011, security personnel loyal to Kadyrov have reportedly engaged with impunity in abductions and killings in Moscow. Alternatively, Kadyrov's men may have killed Nemtsov at Russian President Vladimir Putin's behest.

#2  Sounds about right. However, Putin stands to gain the most from this hit. Right away Putin's crowd mentioned a mystery girlfriend who was with Nemtsov 15 min before the hit.

Putin is looking into this. It might take awhile, however (sarc). Putin is also a devious asshole.

#1  This might be it - Chechens already inclined to do him in, and Putin gave them the nod. Putin gets plasible deniability, and everyone knows Chechens are assholes.
