Israel Shoots Down Syrian MiG Over Golan Heights
2014-09-23
TEL AVIV, Israel - Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet after it entered the country's airspace on Tuesday, an official said.
Pic of the knock-down at the link.
"A Syrian aircraft infiltrated into Israeli airspace. The [Israeli Defense Forces] intercepted the aircraft in mid-flight, using the Patriot air defense system," an IDF spokesman told NBC News, adding that the plane was thought to be a MiG. "The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed."

An unidentified Syrian military source described the shoot-down as an act of aggression, according to Syrian state TV.
As opposed to the penetration of Israeli air space?
The last time Israel downed a Syrian MiG was on Nov. 19, 1984, the IDF said. The Israeli policy is not to interfere in Syria's raging civil war, but officials have warned that anything that crosses the border will get shot down. A drone from Syria was shot down on Aug. 31 and shells from the fighting in Syria periodically land in the Golan Heights.

The Israelis do what they say and say what they do. If the pilot was a defector, he woulda/shoulda/coulda given a clear signal.

#3  I don't support Syria in this mess, but some tolerance might be in order. Was the pilot running from an ISIS SAM/Manpad and yes they have them. Or being Syrian got lost or scared shitless by all the crap that got shot or dropped last night. I do recall defectors back in the Cold War who brought their MIG with them. Israel does have very legitimate worries, Syria trying to drag them into this mess is one - to divert ISIS. Still Israel has suffered 1000's rockets so why drop a lone Syrian MIG?
