'Proud of pure background'
2014-07-24
[The Nation (Pak)] President Barack Obama
Jedi mind meld...
told a group of young black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian men that they need be proud of their backgrounds and draw strength from their cultures, but ignore people who accuse them of "acting white."

Obama shared the advice to the young men as part of his "My Brother's Keeper" program that is marshalling private and public resources to help more boys from minority groups succeed, a program that he views as an important part of his legacy. Obama said students are sometimes discouraged from "reading too much" or "speaking so properly" because of "the notion of 'acting white.'"

"The notion that there's some authentic way of being black, that if you're going to be black you have to act a certain way and wear a certain kind of clothes, that has to go," Obama said. "You don't have to act a certain way to be authentic. You just have to be who you are - and to go back to the values that you care about."

Guess those poll numbers really do suck. Someone is paying attention in the crisis room. Got to get the message out to herd enough back on to the plantation party with sweet talk rather than the usual ten minutes of hate demagoguery.

#4  Is it still legal for a black person to act or assimilate into the larger culture if they want to, e.g. not be racist, not be bothered by being called a racist or an Uncle Tom, give up notions of a thug culture, become well-educated, speak well, embrace America and believe in the Constitution, love liberty and freedom, and wear your pants up around your waist rather than down around your butt?

Rigorous academic study and achievement are not necessary when Affirmative Action becomes the promise. Looking white is simply a modern cultural taboo.

The esteemed African-American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman the late Frederick Douglas is a good example.
