House Speaker Kills Effort To Stop The Feds From Spying On Americans Without A Warrant
2024-04-14
[Federalist] On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans joined enough Democrats to defeat 212-212 a bill amendment requiring the federal government to obtain a warrant before spying on Americans before they’re even accused of a crime.

The GOP-controlled House failed to add an amendment proposed by Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., that would have altered Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to mandate that federal authorities obtain a warrant before surveilling American citizens. Johnson and 85 Republicans joined Democrats in killing Biggs’ proposal through a tied House vote.

#20  in my ideal world we would have several parties, one named conservative and charged with upholding amendments 1-10.

#19  And it won't change. Rabid GOPers are no worse than rabid Dems.

And TDS works both ways.

#18  Don't get me wrong. I don't want slick rationalizing liars like Mike Johnson either. But that's a sea change to get people to stop voting for party machine azzholes.

Some guy compares her to the GOP version of AOC.

#11  Well, a reason implies reasonability.

Can't have that...

#10  It's 'reason' for the search (contained in the warrant) that Feds do not like.

They do want to have to state a 'reason.'

#9  Well, what are reparations for?

#7  Does getting a warrant really matter when the FBI and DOJ are willing to lie, submit knowingly false evidence… in the submission to the courts anyway? The a$$holes in the deep state can and do whatever they want.

#6  The current thinking is that the Rino's were convinced by the argument that the current use of FISA stopped some nastiness or another. This might actually be true, but if it's such a valuable tool, the Alphabet Secret Societies (ASS's) shouldn't have risked it by misusing it against 4A restrictions.

#2  Politico - The Biden administration is making a final push to advocate for the reauthorization of government surveillance powers ahead of the final House vote on Friday.

CIA Director Bill Burns, who rarely speaks publicly about how the agency uses the program, told POLITICO in a statement that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act's Section 702 — which has caused long-running GOP infighting that forced House Republicans to punt on reauthorization three times in the past — has been key to its disruption of illegal fentanyl shipments into the U.S.

“The threat to the US posed by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids is real,” Burns said in the statement. “Section 702 is an essential tool in CIA’s mission to protect the American people from a range of threats, including illicit fentanyl trafficking. Without this vital program, CIA simply would not be able to defend our country as effectively in as many dangerous corners of the world.”
