The Truth About Billy Mitchell, Martyr of Military Air Power
2024-01-18

Bonus film/video, The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell

#3  After the court martial, he was sent to work in (iirc inventory and logistics) at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio - he had a tiny office in the old Quadrangle building, that is now part of the Fort Sam museum. His (and probably over time a lot of other military members') office now presently a small conference and break room. There was a little plaque on the wall, making note of this interesting little factoid.

#2  ...Sadly, the truth: William Lendrum Mitchell was an a$$hole. His efforts to create an independent Air Force actually set it back by at least a decade or so, and he simply could not accept in any way shape or form that he might be wrong.

USAF itself is allergic to any mention of his name. When I was at Langley AFB VA, my NCO Leadership School class took as a class project the identification and restoration of the site where Mitchell's crews built and loaded their bombs, and the renaming of then-TAC HQ as Mitchell Hall. It was made very, very clear to us that Mitchell was not considered a suitable exemplar for modern Air Force officers.
