Five divisions and one naval infantry brigade will be created in Russia
Russia will form five divisions and one brigade of naval infantry of the Navy. The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, announced this on January 10.
“In the medium term, it is planned to reorganize the existing five naval infantry brigades in the fleets into naval infantry divisions, and the naval infantry regiment of the Caspian Flotilla into a brigade,” Evmenov said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.
He explained that this is being done in order to increase the combat capabilities of naval infantry as a separate branch of the Navy.
The Navy Commander-in-Chief did not specify the timing of the creation of the divisions.
As Regnum reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to increase the size of the Russian Armed Forces. In accordance with the document, their staffing should be 2,209,130 people, including 1,320,000 military personnel.
On December 1, the Ministry of Defense announced that the maximum strength of the Russian Armed Forces had increased by 170,000 military personnel and would now amount to 1 million 320,000 military personnel. At the same time, the increase in the number of military personnel will occur in stages due to those wishing to do military service under a contract. The ministry also stated that there are no plans to significantly increase conscription or conduct additional mobilization.
The Ministry of Defense explained that increasing the combat strength and size of the Armed Forces is a reaction to NATO activities.
On December 25, Putin, during a flag-raising ceremony on new naval ships in St. Petersburg, said that Russia would strengthen its naval power in all strategic directions and in areas of the World Ocean.
