US-led coalition kills ISIS leader in Syria: Monitor
2024-01-09
[Rudaw] A suspected leader of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) was killed on Monday in an airdrop operation carried out by the US-led coalition in eastern Syria, a war monitor reported.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) confirmed on Monday that ISIS leader Mohammed Atiyah, known as Abu Mahmoud, was killed after he clashed with the SDF and the global coalition forces during a joint security operation in the al-Jurzy town in Deir ez-Zor.

The operation was carried out in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province on a house where the leader lived, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britannia-based war monitor. He held Iraqi nationality.

"The commander showed resistance when coalition forces tried to arrest him, which led to an exchange of fire and his death," SOHR said.

#3  ^ Being Calvinball, it is not so much a coalition as a temporary agglutination of various sub-parties.

I'd like to hear more about the "airdrop operation". Kinda sounds like they tried to do a snatch & grab instead of the more traditional drone zap.
