Zelenskyy Highlights New Western Democratic Norms and Cancels Election
2023-11-08
[Last Refuge] Ukrainian President Volodymyr has once again cancelled elections within the nation, preferring to continue his rule by unilateral fiat.

A growing opposition movement to Zelenskyy is very visible, and the Ukraine President has refused to consider a need to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed as irresponsible any notion of holding an election in wartime as talks have heated up recently whether Kyiv should be voting when under Russia’s assault.

Calling for unity to avoid pointless political discussion, Zelenskiy’s comments appeared to rule out any suggestion Ukraine should hold a vote to demonstrate its democratic credentials remain in good order.

[...] In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said it was critical to concentrate on the military challenges facing Ukraine as it tries to push out Russian forces occupying nearly one-fifth of its land more than 20 months after launching their invasion.

"We all understand that now, in wartime, when there are many challenges, it is utterly irresponsible to engage in topics related to an election in such a frivolous manner," he said. (read more)

#11   But Stalin did not invade France or bomb London.

He would have done, had the Allies not stopped him at Berlin. Instead he was forced to undermine them from within, following the Gramsci method and sponsoring all sorts of Antifa-like groups to weaken and distract them until those they educated were ready to take power.

Unfortunately, his Soviet Union succumbed first.

#10  We don't cancel elections because we demand ritual and entertainment, even thought the ending has already been preordained.

#8  But even dictators and emperors like Tsar Nicholas II can be overthrown if the war becomes so unpopular that the people would rather risk revolution than suffer another day of a bloody stupid war like WWI. You might call that democracy in its purest form.

#7  I would also argue that democracy is no damn good at all if the people cannot participate in the most important decisions that could possibly face a nation, those decisions that have to do with their sons being sacrificed for the glory of a weasel like Zelensky, on orders from a corrupt dementia patient like Biden.

#6  So all a would be dictator has to do is declare martial law and he's suddenly President for Life.

And yes, Roosevelt shipped materiel to Stalin because, with Hitler on the rampage, Stalin was the lesser of two evils. Some historians, and even Patton, might argue about that. But Stalin did not invade France or bomb London. Also because Roosevelt was a communist at heart.

#3  I don't recall Stalin holding elections 1941-45. For some reason we kept shipping him war supplies.

#2  Ukraine's constitutional text is pretty straightforward: In the case of martial law or a state of emergency, Article 83(4) of the Constitution provides for the extension of the Parliament’s powers until the day of the first meeting of the first session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, elected after the termination of martial law or state of emergency.

The prohibition of wartime presidential elections is also established in statutory law. Article 19(1) of the Law of Ukraine „On the Legal Regime of Martial Law“ prohibits the holding of elections for the President of Ukraine, as well as elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, and local self-government, under martial law. The Electoral Code of Ukraine also provides for the suspension of any electoral process from the moment martial law is introduced (Article 20).
