Pentagon Plans To Slash Thousands Of Troops From Army Special Ops Amid Recruiting Woes, China Threat
2023-10-06
[Daily Caller] The Pentagon may soon sign off on cuts to U.S. Army special operations forces amid recruiting problems and a struggle over limited resources needed to prepare for a possible conflict in the Pacific, The Wall Street Journal reported.

If authorized, the Army would slash 3,000, or about 10%, special operations troops from the ranks despite U.S. Special Operations Command’s (SOCOM) vigorous efforts to convince the Army it needs to retain special forces levels, the WSJ reported. The Army previously pledged cuts to redundant support personnel, but under the proposal, it could also lose so-called "trigger-pullers," the commandos who perform the most dangerous and sensitive military missions around the world.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has not formally authorized the reductions, but he is expected to sign the necessary documents soon, the WSJ reported, citing officials.

#10  ^ except sometimes people forget that the Marine Corp is part of the Department of the Navy and that the National Guard got its own seat at the table.

#9  They are being RIF'd because of the Iron Law of Pentagon Budgeting: one third each of the budget buy goes to the Army, Navy and USAF because it makes for less bureaucratic infighting when the Pentagon goes to Congress -- notice that I didn't mention SOCOM.

#8  Offer a lateral transfer into the BORTAC units in DHS Customs and Border Patrol. Perfect fit to then visit cartel staging area and leadership south of Otay Mesa and Brownsville and points much further south along the "Ho Chi Manuel Trail"!

#7  Agree w/5. OGA and leased help, wrong way to go. If that's all you've got, your shi* is very week.

Ask Vlad about details.

#6  Very small percentage of total force. "High standards" and non-WOKE white majority is likely why they are being RIF'd....

Perhaps some remember the highly successful RIFs of the 70's.

#5  Ergo, the SEAL PED testing.

They'll all move over to the PMC private security sector. That's what we need, a bunch of door-kickers on steroids.

#3 To be honest, we do have a shit-ton of SPECOPs running around. The number ballooned after 9/11 to deal with insurgencies and as long as we don't get into another one, we really don't need this many. Went from all together near 2 battalions to 5. We can cut back to 3.

Lord Vader,

Absolutely right. This same thing happened after Vietnam - the SOF was expanded to the point where people who shouldn't have been there were let in. That's what they have to do now, and reinforce the old standards - we're gonna need 'em.

#2  Bad move that will produce miniscule savings. 'Big Army' obviously still hates them.

#1  How about pulling troops from overseas locations and eliminating those commitments? Of course that would mean closing out a lot of command billets, aka general officer positions.
