Hollywood actors go on strike, say it's time for studio execs to 'wake up'
2023-07-14
Brilliant idea. Y’all go ahead and make yourselves unemployable, and suddenly only conservative actors will be available to work.
[NPR] SAG-AFTRA, the union representing Hollywood actors and performers, has voted to go on strike against major studios. Union president Fran Drescher said in a press conference that it was time for studio executives to "wake up and smell the coffee."

The union's national board made the decision after negotiations broke down with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. After a last ditch effort, monitored by a federal mediator, the two sides failed to come to an agreement.

"This is the Union's choice, not ours," the AMPTP said in a statement. "Rather than continuing to negotiate, SAG-AFTRA has put us on a course that will deepen the financial hardship for thousands who depend on the industry for their livelihoods."

#17  Was a time in human history that travelling minstrels were looked on and treated with contempt by the villagers. What's old is new.

#15  Big reboot. New season, The Nanny,
Now cannier, even more Franny:
"He squeaks as he cleans!
He's the nanny from Queens!"
"He?"
"Uh, she."
"Our new nanny's a tranny?"

Always figured Drescher for a genius... not that I've ever been able to watch more than the odd minute or two of her without feeling like a complete idiot.

#14  I don't think you people understand. None of you are actually necessary.
Your jobs only exist so that someone else can make money.

#13  I'm reading a fantasy novel about a troupe of actors, jugglers, magicians and musicians who travel around the countryside in horse drawn wagons putting on shows for a ha'penny a head. No world famous celebrities, no Beverly Hills mansions, no limousines or red carpets, no People magazine or National Inquirer. Just a group of talented people dedicated to their craft and struggling to make a living at it.

You can only get paid what people are willing to pay. Strike if you must and we'll see what happens.

#10  This reminds me of the time the Buggy Whip Makers union went on strike. Buggy whips were essential to the transportation industry and they wanted more money. They felt the had the whip hand, so to speak, since that "horseless carriage" thing was years away from being practical.

#9  I recommend they form an alliance with Disney and just blockade all their entertainment venues from the American consumer.

That'll teach us a lesson.

#8  Good time to strike during an economic down turn and decreasing demand for your crappy products.

#7  Union president Fran Drescher, "The Nanny"!

How serious and successful could this strike possibly be with her at the helm?

I still hear those grating, nasal tones.

#4  ...It appears that AMPTP is really not messing around - their attitude seems to be that if they simply wait everybody out until the end of October, they'll be offering to pay AMPTP to work instead of the other way 'round.

And with that, my feeling (YMMV, of course) is that the writers may have some real and realistic concerns here. Fully AI'd movies are a ways off yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll live to see them. They gotta make the demands now to insure that they get paid in the future.

#3  Given the movie industry, TV, and too many fading career actors doing Mega Far Left S%^T, for attention.

I hope they do strike and bankrupt every Far Left production company and actor.
