#1 Reportedly, former chief of state Bashir and long time ally Nafie Ali Nafie have escaped from prison. Both were international outlaws. In the early 1990s, al-Bashir appointed Nafie chief of internal security. Next to Hasan al-Turabi, he was the most powerful of the circle of civilian Islamists. He was known for running 'ghost houses' where torture was common.
Nafie had first made contact with Iran shortly after Khomeini came to power. He continued that relationship when Bashir took over. Working out of Khartoum, he was directly involved in the movement to Somali radicals who used them on American military in that country. |
