Single Mother Files Lawsuit After State Allegedly Denies Adoption Due To Her Christian Beliefs
2023-04-04
[DAILYCALLER] A single mother of five filed a lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Human Services Monday for allegedly denying her adoption application due to her religious beliefs, according to a blurb from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).

Jessica Bates, a single mother of five, who also lost her husband in a car crash six years prior, attempted to apply with the department to adopt children in 2022, according to the blurb. Bates’ application was allegedly denied because her Christian beliefs would not allow her to "respect, accept, and support ... the sexual orientation, gender identity, [and] gender expression" of the children in her care as the department’s adoption regulations require, according to the lawsuit.

"Oregon’s policy amounts to an ideological litmus test: people who hold secular or ’progressive’ views on sexual orientation and gender identity are eligible to participate in child welfare programs, while people of faith with religiously informed views are disqualified because they don’t agree with the state’s orthodoxy," ADF Senior Counsel Jonathan Scruggs, director of the ADF Center for Conscience Initiatives, said in the blurb. "The government can’t exclude certain communities of faith from foster care and adoption services because the state doesn’t like their particular religious beliefs."

#2   That said, I'm not entirely good with adding kid # 6 to a single mother running the show

This. It can be done, and even done well, but the odds are against it — and it’s hard enough rearing children when there are two loving parents in the home and enough income for all the necessities plus some extras. All three of my fosterlings — whom I acquired because the trailing daughters brought them home instead of through the formal system — all three came from middle class homes with married/committed parents.

Raj, I knew you were impressive, but this makes you even more so.

#1  ...as the department’s adoption regulations require, according to the lawsuit.

I wonder who created those 'regulations'? This could be like those recent SCOTUS rulings that stated certain Fed agencies overstepped their statutory authority by exceeding their expressly granted scope (i.e., these regulations were created internally by the lefty hack bureaucrats).

That said, I'm not entirely good with adding kid # 6 to a single mother running the show, and it's for an entirely different reason. I grew up in that kind of household (dad was still around, saw him every weekend per the court order). I take mostly the good from the experience, as I've had more than one high school classmate describe me as 'the normal one', having largely avoided constant police arrest and not getting sent to this fuckin' place if I stepped out of line, like they all did. Let's just say the other five kids had varying degrees of success, and I'll close by saying that such an environment is not a good one.
