China Approves $700 Million Loan to Pakistan: Finance Minister
2023-02-23
[KhaamaPress] Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Wednesday that Pakistain’s all-weather ally China has approved a loan of USD 700 million, and the money will be sent to the central bank this week.

The loan announcement from China came a day after Pakistain’s National Assembly passed a money bill to increase tax revenues to meet the demands of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for seeking a USD 1.1 billion loan facility to prevent an economic meltdown.

Dar tweeted, "Formalities have been completed, and the Board of China Development Bank has approved the facility of USD 700 million for Pakistain. This amount is expected to be received this week by the State Bank of Pakistain, which will shore up its forex reserves."

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, there was only one thought in the mouse's mind: I can do this! I can do this! Then the trap sprung...
the government has announced several measures, including an austerity campaign to reduce inflation and economic crisis in the country. In addition, IMF had imposed measures to increase the revenue in order to meet the requirement set by the IMF.

Austerity measures include everyone, even the ministers, advisers, and babus bureaucrats, said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday.

Pakistain’s long-standing balance of payments issue has worsened over the past year as the country’s foreign exchange reserves have fallen to critically low levels. The central bank’s reserves were merely USD 3.2 billion as of February 10, barely enough to fund three weeks’ imports.

Furthermore, Pakistain’s cash-strapped country has also sought a loan from Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...

#2  I should have noted that Turkmenistan managed to complete what amounted to a 7,000 km. pipeline project that carried its natural gas to Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China.

#1  Money down a rathole. One example: In 1995, repeat 1995, after much fanfare Turkmenistan and Pakistan signed the CentGas project that was to carry natural gas at a rate of up to 2 billion cubic ft/day from the Dauletabad field in southeast Turkmenistan to an energy poor Pakistan. The project would have been of great benefit to Pakistan. The Government of Turkmenistan guaranteed deliverability from what it called the Central Asia Gas Pipeline. It was a win-win for Pakistan, and no subsequent deal has ever been better. Twenty eight years later they are still talking about it, and Pakistan continues its ruinous economic policies.
That is the Pak way. Talk is better than action.
