States With the Highest Property Taxes
2023-02-15
[GOBankingRates] In some states, homes are cheap, property tax rates are less than half of 1% and the average property tax payment is just a few hundred bucks per year. In the most expensive states, however, rates soar over 2%, homes are pricey and average annual property tax bills routinely creep as high as $10,000 per year.

Using data from the Tax Foundation, GOBankingRates ranked the states with the highest property taxes in America, including the percentage rate, the average dollar amount paid and the average home value. We ranked the top 15 in ascending order from least expensive to most. For context, the national average effective property tax is 1.04%, the U.S. average home value is $349,015 and the average annual property tax bill is $3,630. See which states are the most expensive to own real estate in.

#15  Here in Florida, property tax is reasonable. Insurance is insane because it's lawyers in the legislature regulating lawyers who fleece insurance companies and insured clients.

What I know, is for a state with no income tax, gummint services are a good deal better than they are in income tax states I'm familiar with.

#14  BUT, here in NH we have no/zip/zero income tax or sales tax.

Which kind of makes up for it.

#11  Everything in life is a trade-off. Then there's the old saying: "Life is a sh*t sandwich. The more bread you have, the less sh*t you have to eat."

Your own private island does not come cheap, unless you are Tom Hanks in Cast Away.

#10  Kind of a tax, eh?

#9  Bigger problem is, how badly do I want to live next door to a pissed off neighbor after I call in code enforcement. My street and neighborhood are just fine, but there's always the bad apple in the barrel somewhere.

Here in Florida, a boat in the yard is expected. But some people have 10, 9 of which will never float again.

In all, it's part of the price I pay to live here.

#8  The enforcement of existing local ordinances (as in Germany and some regions of the US) should protect homeowners from situations such as this. Unfortunately, local ordinances like many other laws, are not enforced.

#7  House like that on the other side of my backyard fence. They have been busted for stealing stuff from the neighbors' garages and harboring unlicensed monkeys, among other things. The last hurricane didn't even disturb the crap in their yard.

#6  Without HOA's, here's an example of what you can expect in Georgia.

#5  Could be worse. Property tax and HOA fees / rules.

#4  The goal appears to be residential property taxes and residential property lease fees on equal footing, making everyone a renter.

#3  If I got to write the new Constitution one of the first things that would be banned is the idea and practice of a commonwealth commontheft.

#2  You don't even own your own ass. But you are liable for it in many ways.

#1  Just what do we actually own, free and clear of the Government control and threat of seizure unless a usage tax is paid?

Don't say Air, there is the EPA and Carbon Taxes.
