Afghan Digest — Tajikistan Notes
2023-02-12
[AfghanDigest] They aren’t actual Russians as the white supremacists measure such things, but they’ll help make up the body count.
  • The number of Tajiks seeking Russian citizenship has grown from approximately 63,000 in 2020 to 174,000 in 2022 and is expected to rise further in 2023.

  • As more Central Asian immigrants head to Russia for work, Russia plans to open pre-migration centers in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan in 2023 to train labor migrants in skills needed across Russia. The center in Tajikistan is expected to open in late 2023.

#1  The civil war that broke out in Tajikistan in 1992 was supported by Islamic radicals from neighboring Afghanistan. Groups of militants began to attempt to cross the Tajik-Afghan border, which was guarded by Russians. Eventually, the situation was calmed thanks in large part to Russian involvement, and whose border guards remained in Tajikistan until 2005 or thereabouts. There has since remained a close working Russia-Tajik relationship, moreso there than in any of the other 'Stans'.
