| Category 4 Atmospheric River Hitting California |

| [CBSnews] An atmospheric river, or a weather system that moves high concentrations of water vapor outside of the tropics, could on Tuesday bring up 1 to 3 inches of rain to the coastal areas, with higher elevations receiving upward of 3 to 5 inches, the National Weather Service told CBS San Francisco. The atmospheric river could be as strong as a Category 4, with a scale that tops out a 5. --------------- Warmer system than last week so rain and/or wet snow in mountains. Main beneficial effect will be refilling reservoirs, e.g., Shasta, Oroville, Don Pedro. Main adverse effect will be urban flooding. Net very beneficial. |

| #9 Lake Oroville water level rose about 2' between local midnight and noon today. After today's storm, Thursday's storm and the weekend storm, I would not be surprised to see a further 20' rise by this time next week with a lot of water equivalent in snow yet to melt. As JHH notes, the rise in the lake level is very welcome. |

| #6 Tahoe Regional Weather Alert this morning: "A significant atmospheric river storm will bring renewed impacts to the region Friday through early Sunday morning. Rain and snow: Heavy rain and high elevation snow is anticipated with this storm with peak rates Saturday and Saturday night. Liquid totals in the Sierra could reach 5 to 7 inches over a 2-day period, with 2 to 4 inches in the foothills, and 1 to 2 inches across western Nevada. Snow levels and character: Snow levels are expected to rise to 8000-8500 feet for around 24 hours during the heaviest precipitation. Snow levels then begin to fall Saturday afternoon bringing impacts to most Sierra passes by evening and to Lake Tahoe and foothill elevations by early Sunday morning. The snow will be a heavy and wet Sierra cement." (Each inch=as much as 1 foot of snow) |
