California's Farmland Rapidly Turns To Dust Amid Water Crisis
2022-07-20
[Zero Hedge] As much of the Western US suffers from a historic drought, all eyes have shifted to Californian farmers as hundreds of thousands of acres become fallow in a state responsible for a tremendous amount of US food production.

Unprecedented cuts to water supplies are jeopardizing the future of growing for many farmers. Drought conditions are worsening, making it harder for farmers to irrigate crops.

Just like that, multi-year, multi-decade investments in farm production have been wiped out over new water restrictions. Much of the fallow land is in California's Central Valley, which produces more than half of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts grown in the US.

Farmers that remain in operation are seeing sharp reductions in surface water rights due to low snowmelt and dwindling storage from last year.

California's most productive agricultural region is turning into dust, which should concern every American.

As a reminder, California produces a quarter of the nation's food -- shrinking crop output is more alarming news that reveals food inflation is becoming structural and won't abate anytime soon.

#7  I had a friend from California in agriculture, they created an invention , a screened apparatus that prevented the smelt from being pumped out, It was not acceptable to the State, makes you think that is more about control than actually saving the smelt.

#6  Add to this the never ending effort by the Left to drain and dismantle Hetch-Hetchy. By God I hope they finally succeed. Want to kill the Bay Area? That's how you do it. God Speed!

#4  I lived in the Bay Area during the Delta Smelt controversy. It looked to me like there was plenty of water coming through the San Joaquin River into the bay. Choosing not to engage in agriculture to save an anchovy is a recipe for skinniness. Woman and minorities will be the most impacted.

#3  Any large-scale water storage project is complex and requires a high degree of planning, engineering, coordination ...

Yeah...all that is virtually impossible in California these days.

#1  The following is a =n answer to why California's demokrat state government is an utter disaster: Prop 1 was passed in 2014, and of the 7.5 Billion for water issues, 2.7 Billion was actually dedicated to water project construction. EIGHT years later, not one shovelful of dirt has moved:
>In November 2014, California voters approved Proposition 1: The Water Quality, Supply, and Infrastructure Improvement Act. The $7.5 billion bond dedicated $2.7 billion for the public benefits of new water storage projects. Some ask, “Why have no new reservoirs been built in the seven years since?” Rest assured, there are projects in the works. All recently passed a key milestone and are moving forward.

Any large-scale water storage project is complex and requires a high degree of planning, engineering, coordination — and significant financing. The California Water Commission has actively overseen the proposed projects over the past six years to help ensure they meet statutory requirements, progress at the rate dictated by the bond legislation, and meet the public benefits promised to voters."
