Mob Burns Suspected Kidnapper Of Catholic Priest In Edo

An angry mob has reportedly burnt to death one of the armed herdsmen who kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev Fr Christopher Odia of St Micheal Catholic Church, Ikabigbo, Edo State on Sunday and killed him.

The suspected kidnapper was said to have been apprehended by youths of Ikabigbo, Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state and was lynched.

SaharaReporters gathered that after the turbans had kidnapped the priest, the youths of the area went after them. They reportedly opened fire on the youths pursuing them, killed one of them and seriously injured three others.

A source said, "The kidnappers also shot full of holes the Reverend Father in anger. The youths wouldn't give up even with the casualties on their side until they arrested two of the gang members.

"One of the turbans was burnt to death and the other retrieved from the angry youths by coppers."

When the State Police Command's front man, Chidi Nwabuzor was contacted for reaction, he confirmed the killing of one of the abductors.

Nwabuzor told SaharaReporters that the kidnapper was killed by its operatives who went after the murderers with local security (vigilantes) after received information on the abduction incident.

He said, "Following the kidnap of the parish priest of St Michael Catholic church, lkhabigbo, Etsako West local government area of Edo State, Rev Father Christopher Odia in his rectory while coming out to go for Sunday mass in the wee hours of 26/6/22, a combined team of police tactical teams went into the forest with a view to rescue the Catholic priest.

"In frustration, the kidnapped Rev Father Christopher Odia was killed by his abductors.

"Intensive bush combing is ongoing towards ensuring that those who escaped are arrested and made to face justice."
