Longtime Texas Democratic House district goes GOP after Mayra Flores wins special election
2022-06-16
[NYPOST] Republican Mayra Flores defeated the leading Democratic candidate for an open congressional seat in a historically blue region of South Texas in a Tuesday special election.

Flores, who will be the first Mexican-born congresswoman, garnered about 51% of the vote to top Dan Sanchez, who received 43% of the vote with all precincts reporting.

The seat had been vacated in March by former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., Flores declared victory at her election party in San Benito, the Texas Tribune reported.

"For over 100 years, we have been taken for granted," she told her supporters, according to the report. "I will show you what real representation looks like. I will represent all people."

Sanchez conceded Tuesday night, and blamed Democrats for their lack of support.

#5  As P2K said, 'vote harvesting' is ripe for the practice of thugs showing up on your doorstep and "advicing" you to vote for Their candidate.

#4  When I was working in the refineries doing construction, there was a lot of Hispanics from there up here to work and not only were they strong trump supporters, they were very unhappy with the Democrats regarding law and order, immigration and their attempts to destroy families. It's been changing for some time.

#3  ..whistling past the graveyard. There are a lot of those on the 'other side' who are deciding to just stay home. They'll never pull a lever for a Trunk, but they won't show up either. Thus the desperate need for agents to sign the 'sit outs' names (except in PA which is no longer required) on a ballot for people just like that aka ballot harvesting.

#2  The vote turnout was just ~5%. This district will flip back to the DNC in November after redistricting is completed. So this is not really the BFD being portrayed.

#1  "God - Family - Country" was her campaign placard. Hidalgo GOP Hispanic Get Out The Vote Chair. Texas GOP decided several years ago to build an army of Hispanic get Out the Vote operatives from the Hispanic community in every Texas County. Now those operatives are running for office themselves as Republicans.
