Code Name Mincemeat: The deception operations that helped end WW2 |

[BBC] British intelligence agent Ewen Montagu's view of Welshman Glyndwr Michael may be somewhat harsh. After all, after his death aged 34, he helped to end World War Two months earlier than it could have ended, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. In April 1943, his corpse was used for Operation Mincemeat, the most audacious hoax of the conflict. It duped the Germans into redeploying entire regiments away from Sicily to Greece and the Balkans. |

#3 Over the course of a weekend Montagu wrote The Man Who Never Was (1953), which sold two million copies and formed the basis for a 1956 film. Great book. |

#2 There's a newish book about it that has more details. Apparently it helped that the Nazi intelligence officer assigned to it was eager for a big catch and that the senior analyst who Hitler trusted to assess the documents had soured on Nazism. |
