Americans are torn between the desire to save Ukraine and the sad reality that we won't. Years of division and a visibly incompetent blunderer as president have made our nation weak, writes historian WILFRED MCCLAY

#10  The media is torn between desire and reality. The general public could care less.

Damn straight. If they're going to put up another botchjob in a shithole country that's none of our business, they can bloody well sink their own money. Not ours. Stay the fuck out.

#6  A classic example of unintended consequences came out of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. We interfered and provided weapons to the Afghans. Eventually the Soviets had enough and left. But then we got Osama bin Laden. Recent history is littered with the tragedies that result from American interventionism.

#5  Except we're making it hell for ourselves and for the poor Ukrainians. It's not like Afghanistan because fucking bleeding hearts have adopted Ukraine as their next Holy Mission.

We will be on the hook to clean up Putin's mess. Billions every year for the next 30 years at least. While they make us poor and push ration cards on us

#4  We also had no compelling interest in Afghanistan when the soviets invaded but for the impish desire to make it hell for the soviets. I have no issue doing the same here, but no troops. Golden opportunities for field testing our hardware vs theirs.
