| Migrant and refugee crossings of English Channel increasing, despite risks |

| [DW] Despite tougher measures on both sides of the English Channel, asylum-seekers are still trying to make the dangerous crossing from La Belle France to the United Kingdom, in an attempt to find a better future. A young man and his wife sit on a blanket near a traffic circle, not far from the main road on the outskirts of Calais in northern La Belle France. Nearby, their two children look on questioningly. Speaking in German, the man tells DW that they are originally from Eritrea ...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age... , and that their application for asylum had been rejected by the German authorities. |
