#1 The powerful Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) signaled its unhappiness in January of this year when it organized a general strikes to protest unemployment, inflation, etc. The Union held strikes in a number of states beginning in Gafsa, in southwestern Tunisia, on January 7, followed by another strike in the eastern-central Sfax region on the 12th. The fact that the UGTT does not demand the resignation of the present government is a sign that it is willing to rid or at least limit the power of the Islamist Ennahda Party. |
