Pope Francis restricts Latin Mass that calls for the conversion of the Jews

[IsraelTimes] Decision walks back earlier decree by Pope Benedict XVI.
Appreciate it, dude. The thing was rather rude, no matter how well intentioned.

#9  Do better Rantburg.

We are constantly trying. At the same time, the media is getting better at selling stories. Case in point, eh? A sprinkling of facts, some precisely timed outrage, and Zoom! we're off to the races.

Luckily, here at the 'Burg, no matter what the subject, we seem to have someone who knows about it, has done it, or was there when it jumped off. Our diversity is very diverse. It helps to cut thru the fog which seems to be getting thicker. Thank you all for your participation.

#8  I have been known to be wrong once or twice, OldSpook. And very glad on this occasion that the situation was exaggerated in the report, as you, These Forkbeard7574, and Tom point out in increasing detail.

#7  Sorry for the broken HTML. Laptops are evil when it comes to proof reading things.

And yes, I am busting your chops somewhat. This was like the the Know Nothnings, with as much knowledge as the Westboro Church shows about Catholicism in their screeds.

The prayer was changed 13 years ago. And this yo-yo of an author is using it to buttress a liberal Pope who as noted by others, is using it as a political cudgel. The author is probably a progressive/liberal as well, with his bias shining through.
Do better Rantburg.

#6  Sorry TW, but you're wrong. As are the others, and this author.

That was a cheap shot article, and shoddy clickbait for a headline. Here is the whole of the truth:

At issue is the prayer for the conversion of the Jews in the 1962 Roman Missal. This prayer is one of the intercessory prayers for those belonging to various non-Catholic religious groups. These prayers are unique to the Good Friday liturgy, which consists of the reading of the Passion, the extended intercessory prayers, the veneration of the Cross, and the distribution of Communion using previously-consecrated hosts.

In other words, only at that one Mass, only one time in the year, in addition to prayers for other groups of non-Christian non-Cathoic people.

Pope Benedict issued a revised version which eliminated some of the language which in modern usage has negative connotations (perfidious, which originally meant lacking faith, for instance, now means treacherous).

Here is the prayer in its entirety: Read it for yourself.

Amen.

Let us also pray for the Jews: that God our Lord might enlighten their hearts, so that they might know Jesus Christ as the Savior of all mankind. [Let us pray. Let us bend our knees (kneel). Please rise.] Almighty and eternal God, whose desire it is that all men might be saved and come to the knowledge of truth, grant in your mercy that as the fullness of mankind enters into your Church, all Israel may be saved, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Not nearly as nefarious as the bunch of you are insinuating

#5  That is not what this was about. It was a power play by Bergoglio The Jesuit Liberal taking a swipe at the orthodox part of the church.

If it was about the "conversion" thing, a simple statement would have changed that part of the missal, much the way they did a few years ago to the modern massin changing some phrases and other things, for instance, "Peace Be With You" - the old response was "also with you" and now its "and with your spirit".

THis was a simple power political ploy by Francis. It is a way to push the orthodox out of the way, so he can continue trying to promote proge\ressive trash and other modernist heteerodoxy, creating a real schism in the Church. If he was truly concerned with the unity of the Church, he would be acting on the schismatic Synod movement in Germany, not on the Latin Mass.

You all missed the point.

#4  Hmmm. I was an altar boy for 8 years way back when the Mass was in Latin, and I don't recall this. (And I had four years of Latin in high school, so by the end I did understand all the stuff we were saying.)

#3  The original desciples believed christianity was a subset of judaism and ment only for jews. They still followed all the judaic laws and saw themselves as jews, not christians

#2  Nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus speak of conversion. What the Gospel asks is that the faithful proselytize. I believe the idea is you have to accept the Lord as Your Personal Savior, not have Him thrust on you like the pisslamists do with mahound.
