After Amir Hekmati
... Amir Mirza Hekmati in our archives, the first generation Iranian-American military translator was picked up by the Iranian authorities while visiting his grandparents in the Olde Countrie. Going there was clearly not one of his brighter ideas....

#3  We’ve known they take hostages since 1979. That’s why I don’t understand dual passport holders going there and being shocked when it happens to them. I was terrified when my half-Persian fosterling joined her father a few years ago to spend a month visiting the cousins who’d stayed behind in the Olde Countrie in 1979, especially as they were all Baha’i... and my fosterling was a typically progressive women’s libber, and it was the summer of the Green Protests (2014?).

“No need to worry, Aunt J,” the young lady told me. “Our Iranian passports say we’re Muslim, and I’ll wear a scarf over my hair while we’re there.”

I was very careful what I said on her Facebook page and mine until they returned safely. Especially when she posted about going with the local cousins to watch the protests. Someone who’d worn an American uniform should know better than to put himself in their hands.

#2  the FBI concluded that he went there intent on selling Iran classified information

"No no no! I was visiting my poor baba bozorg!"

"Does your baba bozorg work in the VAJA?"

"Uhh... yes, but... that's besides the point!"

#1  Hekmati had given ’evasive, false and inconsistent statements’ during three FBI interviews, failed to ’credibly refute’ that most of the classified information he accessed related to Iran and ’traveled to Iran for primary purposes other than to visit his family’.
