Air Force helicopter made emergency landing after being hit by bullet over Virginia
2020-08-12
[MSN] An Air Force helicopter on Monday was damaged and forced into an emergency landing in Virginia, resulting in injuries to an aircrew member and prompting an FBI investigation.

"Initial findings are that the helicopter was struck by a bullet resulting in a minor injury to an aircrew member and damage to the aircraft," an Air Force spokesperson said in a statement to POLITICO. "The aircraft safely landed and the incident is currently under investigation."

The news of the incident was first reported by McClatchy.

The affected aircraft was a UH-1N Huey helicopter flying at about 1,000 feet outside of Middleburg, Va., during a routine training mission, the Air Force said. The helicopter, assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron stationed at Joint Base Andrews, landed at 12:43 p.m. in nearby Manassas, Va.

The Air Force spokesperson said the branch’s Office of Special Investigations is assisting the FBI in a probe of the incident.

In recent years, more active-duty U.S. military deaths have come from training incidents than active combat operations, prompting lawmakers to take note of the trend.
I certainly feel more secure knowing the FBI is on the case. Ooh! Ooh! Is dat Ephraim Zimbalist, Jr. over there?

#4  I find it ironic that the Air Force drives around in the Navy version of the Huey. I understand it (two engines and all) but still.

#3  I understand it was shot from the ground; ie not a ND on-board.

Which makes the last sentence really strange. Could be the reporter is a total idiot who thinks the military actually shoots at each other for practices.

Practice for Marine 1?

#1  ...I guarantee that somebody's gonna get hauled up for this one. Way too much military flying in that area, plus VIP flights out of DC.
