End of the dream-job era in the Arabian Gulf
2020-05-24
From a week ago, but I think still interesting.
[AlAhram] The Covid-19 pandemic has led to growing pressure for the wealthy Gulf states to deport expatriate workers.

The presence of voices in the Gulf against the expatriate communities that make up the majority of the populations of many of the states in the region are not unprecedented, but with the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic and its economic consequences, exacerbated in the Gulf by a sharp drop in oil prices, such voices are becoming louder and more widespread.

#4  The princes of creation? No, that will be a difficult transition. But there will be plenty of girls thrilled by the independence being permitted to earn a wage will give them, at least during working hours, and humble enough to accept whatever opportunity to work is thrown their way. And their fathers and brothers will be happy enough to take their earnings, as is their lordly right.

#3  ...There is one flaw in this brilliant idea: Gulf nationals (and ESPECIALLY the Saudis) have usually had a monthly income from the state that has relieved the need for them to work, and the TCNs (Third Country Nationals) do all the jobs the Saudis have never wanted to do. I see some difficulty in convincing much of the male Saudi population that there is nobility in work.
