#27   I mean, people seem to despise learning new things and are sticking to their North Korea knowledge back when they served near the DMZ back in the 1970s.

Yeah...go to a party Erb.

#26  38 North is all over Rantburg’s North Korea section, Herb. North Korea was Dr. Steve’s beat when he was a moderator.

#25  Doesn’t anyone here sleep?

Like Chuck Norris, Rantburg does not sleep. It waits.

#23  Kim Jong-Un is a dictator? Really? I thought the consensus was that he is way, way, way too young to be leader and that he's more of a face man for the real power in North Korea.

A couple of blogs people might enjoy reading: https://www.38north.org/ and https://www.libertyinnorthkorea.org/blog/. Or not. I mean, people seem to despise learning new things and are sticking to their North Korea knowledge back when they served near the DMZ back in the 1970s.

#22  Communism is toxic. I encourage all who believe in "communism lite" to immediately begin taking 10% arsenic in their food and water to prove their point.

#21  IMO, the PRC relationship w NKor is somewhat like the relationship between an adult gangster
and a drug dependent child.

That's a most succinct description of this particular geopolitical situation.

And that's a Snark of the Day.

I bet if we sent newly-appointed Ambassador Dennis Rodman to NKor with cognac, the aforementioned ribeyes and some "groupies", we could nudge Pudge a little further away from the Chicoms. Worth doing for the entertainment value alone.

#20  #22 It's not a dictatorship, it has a hereditary God-King.

#19  #6 But the Norks would have none of it

In this case history and other countries do not apply. Because Herb? NK is a dictatorship, has been for decades.

#18  1. North Korea has consistently refused to follow China's model. The one that China introduced to Burma and the Burmese are going gangbusters with.

2. Kim Jong-Un purged all of his father's pro-China advisers. He wouldn't have done that if he was going to follow China's advice.

"Norks are a Chinese puppet" hasn't been true for decades. If they were, they would have opened up and become fantastically rich by now.

Prove me wrong. Cite sources. Present evidence. You know, argue.

#17  In other words, Herb - shouldn't it be on you to prove you're right?

I don't like or dislike you (although g(r)om sucks - he's an asshole), so don't take my posts as such.

#16  Still waiting for citations and arguments to prove that today's North Korea is a Chinese lackey.

So let me get this straight - you make a statement / assertion, P2k (and others) advise you to read some history, and now you're asking them to provide you with evidence that they're right? I'm pretty sure it's not gonna work that way.

#15  #17 So because things happened thousands of years ago it means it can't change today?

#14  Considering that when they targeted the ROK island a while back, a good chunk missed and those that hit were 25% duds, the sea of fire for Seoul may only be a mild forest fire.

#13  #14 (a) Koksan, (b) KPAGF artillery.
In 1987, several M-1978s were supplied to Iran, and used during the Iran–Iraq War. When using rocket-assisted projectiles, a range of almost 60 kilometres (37 mi) could be achieved
If they had 60 km in 1987...

#12  Ref #12. ....27000 artillery pieces pointed at Seoul?

Takes a big cannon to hurl a projectile more than 25 miles. I doubt few of he 27000 have the capability.

The 'puppet' analogy doesn't work well but neither does the 'independent actor' analogy.

#10  If China shut Nork off they would be dead, juche or no-juche

But they'll take South Korea with them - was it 27000 artillery pieces pointed at Seoul?

#9  Herb's a fool or tool. Your pick. Why not both?

#8  So, I'm curious: can anyone actually make a case for China controlling North Korea?

Like I posted Herb, go read up on 2 thousand years of Chinese - Korean history. China has a long memory. What once was theirs belongs to them as far as they're concerned. Quit avoiding having to do the hard reading so you can just wave your hand and dismiss any counter argument as ad hominem.

#7  Herb sort of ignores two thousand years of history between the Middle Kingdom and Korea.
