Anthony Hopkins on Why He Doesn't Talk About Politics: 'Actors Are Pretty Stupid'
2019-12-09

[PJMedia] In a conversation with fellow actor Brad Pitt for a lengthy chat for Interview magazine, Anthony Hopkins explained why he seldom -- actually: never -- talks about politics... and why he's not a big fan of other actors talking about politics either. In short: "Actors are pretty stupid."

"People ask me questions about present situations in life, and I say, ’I don’t know, I’m just an actor,'" Hopkins told Pitt. " I don’t have any opinions. Actors are pretty stupid. My opinion is not worth anything. There’s no controversy for me, so don’t engage me in it, because I’m not going to participate."

Hopkins was interviewed by Pitt because of the release of his new Netflix movie, The Two Popes, in which he plays the part of Pope Benedict XVI. Although Pitt apparently tried to get some controversial political (or religious) answers out of him, Hopkins refused to play that game.

It is extremely refreshing to see an actor take this position. Sadly, the new generation of Hollywood stars has a different opinion. Take Mark Ruffalo, the millionaire actor who recently endorsed Bernie Sanders. This multi-millionaire (who's reportedly worth $30 million) wrote on Twitter that "it’s time for an economic revolution. Capitalism today is failing us, killing us, and robbing from our children’s future."

#16  Method acting, continued.... British satirical puppet show "Spitting Images" loved to make fun of De Nito, Pacino, Brando and the whole Method crowd.

Here's "Robert De Niro prepares for a film"

#15  Actors in the US tend to go for Method Acting. That is get in the head of the character like a profiler does with a serial killer. I suspect this leads to insanity over time.

The British, in general, haven't embraced the Method. They just act as no audience can see the internal workings of the actors mind anyway.

#14  Smarter? Perhaps or perhaps not, but Anthony Hopkins is certainly showing far greater Wisdom in not commenting casually in fields he is not a master.

#13  Brad Pitt and Ruffalo are both 'deep rollers'.

#12  Hopkins thus shows he is 100 times smarter than any other actor out there.

#10  perfectly cast as Hulk

Shitshow, Hollywood version, entails mediocre talents making ridiculously stupid CGI cartoons to be consumed by the world's morons and children, to be further monetized via license agreements with makers of dolls, backpacks, t-shirts, breakfast cereals, vanity rugs, shower curtains, facial jewelry, sex toys.

This creates the profits which enable the "talent" that otherwise would be appearing in local repertory versions of Broadway hits from the 1970s and 1980s ("Cats," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat") to amass 8-figure fortunes and opine on issues of wealth creation and distribution, monetary policy, the proper role of the state etc.

#9  Ruffalo made his money as part of an assemble cast. He was perfectly cast as Hulk but nobody went to see because of him. Capitalism will have an effect if he leaves the safety of the flock.

#8  Hopkins is 10x the actor that Buffalo Mozzarella is

#7  Hopkins is a cut above the other Hollywood actors who think their opinions are worth more than the man/womans' on the street.

#6  Exactly.

Copyright and Patent title rent-seeking is the VERY OPPOSITE of capitalism.

#5  If you take away infinite copyright from the entertainment business, suddenly the pile of money they play with shrinks considerably. The rewards start to match more common professions. Go back to the original 14 years, with the individual artist (not corporate) granted another 14 years by application.

#4  Like conservatism, capitalism sometimes succeeds in spite of itself.

#3  capitalism has failed if a non talent like Ruffalo has amassed millions

Perfect is the enemy of good.

#2  And in a sense, capitalism has failed if a non talent like Ruffalo has amassed millions.

#1  So, Hopkins is smarter than he realizes.
