2019-04-21
In honour of Easter, a story of the preservation of Christian history that goes on in defiance of those who would erase it.
[Ynet] In the shadow of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
insurgency, a Greek team is photographing thousands of fragile documents, including some of the earliest copies of the Christian gospels, using a complex process to create the first digital archive of all 4,500 items in the library

At St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Egypt's Mount Sinai, the silence in the library is broken only by low electrical humming, as an early manuscript is bathed in green light.

#4  Saw this on the History or Discovery channel the other day.

Interesting how they use different color light, RGB IIRC, and then use the computer to merge the images to bring out much more detail. They certainly seemed to know what they were doing.

#2  They should use the Kentucky Vis Center's technique. They do mainly early scrolls and books to fragile to open or unroll. The way they do it is a 3D NMR scan (same units hospitals use) and then digitally unroll or open the pages for the 3D NMR image. This guy is the expert.
