Heard at AIPAC, Day 1: Romania moves embassy to Jerusalem, Honduras to open mission, and more
2019-03-25
[Twitter] Romania PM: "I am pleased to announce today that Romania will move our embassy to Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Israel"
Bless you, President Trump, for moving the Overton Window, even if the president of Romania chooses, in a fit of pique, to disagree with his stunningly beautiful prime minister:
Romanian president rebuffs his ‘ignorant’ PM over pledge to move embassy: Final decision on relocating mission ‘rests with me,’ stresses Klaus Iohannis, contradicting government head’s statement at AIPAC conference.

Honduras president announces ‘immediate’ opening of ‘diplomatic mission’ in Jerusalem

[IsraelTimes] Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández tells the AIPAC Policy Conference that his country will “immediately” open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem.

“Honduras will immediately open our official diplomatic mission and this will extend our embassy to the capital of Israel, Jerusalem,” Juan Orlando Hernández tells the crowd.

In the long term, Hernandez says his country will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem once Israel opens an embassy in the Honduras capital of Tegucigalpa.

Last year, Honduras was one of only eight countries that opposed a UN General Assembly resolution condemning US President Donald Trump’s December 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, along with Guatemala, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo

As 2020 Dems call to rejoin Iran deal, Dermer says that’s ‘totally unacceptable’

[IsraelTimes] Israeli envoy to the US tells crowd of 18,000 at AIPAC’s annual confab that re-entering the JCPOA means giving ‘hundreds of billions of dollars to people who are committed to Israel’s destruction’.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s 2019 Policy Conference kicked off Sunday. This year’s motto — “Connected for Good — is a rebuke to the controversy that has ensured the organization over the last month, after freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar accused the lobby of paying politicians to support Israel.

AIPAC is committed to emphasizing that both sides of the aisle support Israel, and perhaps mitigating the perception that Israel has become a Republican cause. “The conference will focus on further strengthening bipartisan support for the US-Israel relationship,” an AIPAC official told The Times of Israel.

Last week, Al Monitor solicited leading Democratic candidates as to whether they would rejoin the deal that Trump pulled out of. Five said they would, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and California Senator Kamala Harris.

The Democratic National Committee also passed a resolution in February calling for the United States to re-enter the agreement.

MP who quit UK Labour over anti-Semitism warns AIPAC ‘things can change quickly’

[IsraelTimes] Joan Ryan says her party sank ‘so low, so fast,’ and urges lobby group to confront politicians ‘who question Israel’s right to exist, engage in anti-Semitic tropes about loyalties’.

At AIPAC, Dem House majority leader aims fire at Ilhan Omar

[IsraelTimes] Steny Hoyer says comments by freshman lawmaker on dual loyalty is not representative of Democrats when it comes to Israel.
That’s certainly one perspective. But if it’s so, why was she not punished by being stripped of her committee memberships?
Hoyer also appeared to criticize Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a Palestinian American who backs ending assistance to Israel and who plans to lead a lawmakers’ tour of the West Bank to rival the one Hoyer leads to Israel every year with the assistance of an affiliate of AIPAC, as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y., who has defended Tlaib and Omar.

“This August I will lead what I expect to be the largest delegation ever” to Israel, Hoyer said. “There are 62 freshman Democrats,” he said, and cocked his ear. “You hear me? 62 — not three.”
All the more reason to punish the three who are out of line. But y’all have not done so.

#1  Bless you, President Trump, for moving the Overton Window,

Dude is like the Worst Hitler Ever(tm). Interesting how a bunch of other countries are making pro-Israel moves now that our Prez has started the game. I'd hesitate to call it a preference cascade (yet!) but there does seem to be some pent-up demand.
