Hundreds march through Beirut to protest child marriage |
2019-03-03 |
[ALMASDARNEWS] Hundreds erupted into the streets of Beirut on Saturday in protest against child marriage in Leb, and to call for parliament to make 18 the legal minimum age for marriage in the country. "We are here to say that it is time for us to approve a law prohibiting the marriage of minors because it is not only a feminist demand but a human demand that must be recognised," said Hoda Shokier, a protester. Religious community courts currently determine the legal age of marriage, with each court enforcing its own law, some of which allow girls under 15 years of age to be married. |
