Sirte celebrates second anniversary of liberation from ISIS
2018-12-18
[Libya Observer] al-Bunyan al-Marsous Operation military leaders and fighters, officials from Sirte municipality held a ceremony on Monday at Ouagadougou Hall in the city amid no attendees from government officials - parliament, high council of state and presidential council.

"We have invited officials from the parliament, high council of state and presidential council - especially those who represent Sirte - but nobody turned up." The front man for the municipality of Sirte Mohammed al-Amyal said.

"Only representatives of Harawa municipality showed up out of the invitations to all Libyan municipalities." He added.

The commander of al-Bunyan al-Marsous Operation Bashir al-Gadi was there along with several military officials from the central region and Sirte.

The presidential council issued Monday a statement to commemorate the second anniversary of liberating Sirte from ISIS, saying that liberation didn't terminate the terrorist group once and for all in Libya, calling for caution.

"There are still some terrorist cells waiting to strike and carry out criminal operations in the county," the statement reads.

It also urged for uniting Libya's army under a civilian executive authority.

Sirte was liberated by al-Bunyan al-Marsous Operation in 2016 and on December 17 of that year exactly, the head of the presidential council Fayez al-Sirraj announced that the city was fully freed from the faceless myrmidons after over seven months of fierce festivities.
