Florida airbase damage deals a costly blow to the F-22
2018-10-18
[AsiaTimes] About 20 of the highly expensive Raptor jets may have been damaged at Tyndall Air Base when Hurricane Michael swept through, which could cost the US Air Force (and American taxpayers) billions.
I want to know why a base that was supposed to be able to fight WW-III couldn't take a hurricane.
DOMES and Bunkers not steel buildings.
Criminal!!
The briefing by the Air Force leadership team following the hurricane can be seen here. It sounds like they got everyone out but key personnel left on guard, and also all the airplanes capable of flying. And from the Air Force Times:
Hurricane damage to Tyndall F-22s ‘less than we feared,’ but unknown how many will fly again

#6  Can't do what civies do. 15 to 20 percent above normal cost. Then again, it wasn't the lowest bidder.

I wonder how 100 mph winds compare to the blast pressure from a missile or bomb. I suspect it is much, much less. Sustained vs impulse, but still...

#4  So 20 flatbed trucks couldn’t be found in the entire federal inventory, let alone private sources, to drive them out of the storm path?

#3  Wonder if Mad Dog Mattis will chime in. He is SecDef isn't he? Maybe he can Blame it on Trump in a NYT or 60 minutes interview.

#2  I have a feeling that these planes were hit by hurricane obama and his canpoint drama prior to this one.
They will probably continue to be cannibalized or a few repaired.... but their maintenance was more than questionable at this point. As with everything under obama, this base was nothing special to him either. Most of this equipment is overseas continuing obamas meat grinder until we can exit stage RIGHT.

#1  89 miles from Eglin AFB.
So that's 20 units that won't need maintenance.
Back to manufacturing for 'reconditioning'.
Somebody's maint budget is gonna have a surplus.
