Iraq’s Hawija turns dark as Islamic State continues to target electricity pylons

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) – Islamic State militants blew up on Monday an electricity pylon in Hawija district in Kirkuk, causing power outage in the former IS bastion.

“A group of IS militants placed explosives under an electricity pylon in al-Siha village in Hawija, causing it to collapse,” a security source told Ayn Al Iraq News website.

“The explosion left Hawija district in complete darkness,” the source said, adding that technical teams rushed to the site in order to fix and maintain the destroyed pylons.

IS has blown up several electricity pylons in many of Kirkuk cities in a bid to cut electricity at cities controlled by Iraqi troops and tribes.

Bomb attack leaves 3 Iraqi policemen killed, wounded in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi policeman was killed and two others were wounded Monday in a bomb attack in oil-rich Kirkuk province, a security source said.

Speaking to Ayn Al Iraq News website, the source said that an explosive charge left by Islamic State went off while a police patrol was passing by the Riyadh district, east of Hawija.

“The explosion left a policeman dead and two others wounded,” the source said, adding that the dead body was moved to the forensic medicine department, while the injured were transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Two people killed, third injured in bomb explosion, west of Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Three people were killed and injured as a motorbike exploded, west of Kirkuk province, a security source from the province said on Monday.

“A motorbike exploded this morning in a village in al-Dibs town, west of Kirkuk,” the source told Shafaq News website.

The blast, according to the source, “took place as a bomb was placed on the motorbike, causing the death of two persons, while the third was injured.”

Iraqi troops purge 14 villages in Kirkuk’s Hawija from IS remnants

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi police forces purged on Tuesday 14 villages in Kirkuk’s Hawija district from Islamic State militants.

Iraqi website Baghdad News quoted federal police chief Raed Shawkat as announcing that 14 villages in Hawija have been completely liberated from Islamic State remnants.

“The troops also seized a terrorist hotbed of Islamic State in northern Hawija, in addition to a tunnel filled with explosive charges,” Shawkat added.
